Well I tried clearing cache before and after but to no avail so I think vanilla should be base case, yeah. The act of clearing isn't too good imo though - if you click "make firewall exception" or something to that effect the text at the bottom says it is completed successfully when the exception is added. When I click the shader clear option though there is no such message and I can click the same button many times. Does it happen almost instantly or after a long wait? Although saying that it is too late for me as I'm redownloading but maybe it'll help someone else.

Clearing the shader cache is a small file in "MydocumentsBiowareMassEffectPublishedCookedPC" its just a stored copy of whats in the games folder.  Should have nothing to do with firewall, its all local files.  The clear is immediate, and you'll notice a longer startup time the first time tyou run the game after clearing the cache because it's rebuilding it.  this happens when you first install the game, and after installing DLC and patches, so it's nothing unusaul for the engine etc...

Also if your downloaded mod files net to ~5.83 GB there should be no need to redownload the mod.  Re-downloading ME from steam or Origin may be required to get a vanilla set of files if you didn't back them up when prompted or had an already permamodded version with no back up.

Aaah cool, I did notice the longer start up time so I had cleared it. Yeah I have the mod but re'dling game on steam to be sure it is clean. Owned ME1-2 for ages but never finished the second, bought 3 recently for my first full playthrough, and thanks to you it will be even sweeter! :D

Alright so after downloading and installing the pack, I manually deleted the shader cache, made sure the ini tweaks matched the readme, and launched the game. Everything looks fine except when I turn on Dynamic shadows in-game. This is what it looks like with DS on:

Image IPB Image IPB

As you can see, the shadows on the faces are very pixely/fuzzy looking. This is for all character's faces in the game as I can tell.

^^Hmm...you are the second person who is having this happen...maybe I missed key shaders in the install? I'll have a looksy when I get home. I can throw together a zip file with the shaders needed, which you can drag and drop for now, rather than recompile the entire mod. I'll update when I get home.

Alright, that would be awesome. I feel like something is either conflicting or missing with the shaders in the game. Because shadow resolution is fine everywhere except the pockets of the faces and around certain objects.

This is always the case with vanilla ME1 shadows, but you may notice it more with the bioengine.ini tweaks because I recommend setting them to add more detail and cast more shadows.  This looks good when using the shadow fix, but without it it's annoying.

OK, so I have my steam install and steam apps folder on a different drive (E: in this case) and when running the installer it completes in about 5 seconds and says it was successful, but hasn't copied many, if any files.

When installing it simply says that it is installing to "E:\\Program" and drops the rest of the path. I'm not sure if that is just the file path handling relating to the installer textual feedback, or if it is a genuine problem.

Installing to a random root directory on my E: drive with no spaces in the name yields better results and all the files are copied from the mod. So the downloads appear to be OK.

Anyone else seeing this? I might download Mass Effect again only this time into a root folder to see if that makes a difference.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro x64 with the steam version of ME for what it's worth.

Thanks for all you do CDAMJC!

Hmm looks like sometimes the installer won't overwrite files...it seems random and its annoying.  For now to ensure the mod installs in full if people are having issues, isntall the mod to a new folder, then copy and paste all of the files into your MassEffect folder.  I am wondering if it has to do with administrator priveleges.  Windows 8 especially hates when you modify the program files directory in my experience anyway.  I use windows 8 on my surface pro, and 7 on my desktop.

Okay so I checked the installer and I was missing 2 shaders that effect the shadows derp...I will upload a zip file containing them. Link to come shortly.

Image IPB

Once the file is approved by moddb.com:

Update: File is up and ready...go get your nice shadows :)

Unzip into Mass Effect\\Engine and overwrite files. Then load MassEffectConfig.exe select repair and then choose delete local shader cache. Save and exit. Run the game with better shadows.

What if you can't open the MassEffectConfig.exe? For me, any time I try opening it, it gives me a runtime error and crashes :(

Is there a way to repair without it?

Yes delete the shader cache found in: MyDocuments\\bioware\\MassEffect\\Published\\CookedPC.

Typically the reason for your crash is if you have the bioengine.ini to read only which I do aswell because I hate re-applying those teaks every time I install something.

Oh you're a freaking genius, thank you! I forgot that I had set my Bioengine.ini to read only, ok that makes sense now.

Small update in my own testing :

I was having trouble getting it to run on my surface pro and after pulling my hair I thought maybe I should try LAA eventhough its using only 1.3 gb RAM, and for some miraculous reason it worked. So try applying LAA to MassEffect.exe. So if you get invalid page faults and random crashes etc... apply LAA to Mass Effect .exe (this is most likely due to integrated Vram from the Intel HD 4000 on the Intel i5 Chipset.  So if you have integrated graphics apply LAA to MassEffect.exe and you should be all set.)

Also added a troubleshooting section to the OP, and a small update on how to apply the shadow fix.

I had to install the files into a separate folder and then drag-and-drop them into the Mass Effect folder to reach 20GB. Installing directly to the Mass Effect folder only netted 17.3GB or something like that. I don't know why that is.

Now as I try to run the game, it starts, the new splash page shows and then the screen goes black before bouncing me back to the desktop. The ME icon pops up on the taskbar, task manager says ME is running, but if I try to click on the icon the screen just flickers black for a moment before going back to the desktop.

I'm aware that deleting the shadow cache is supposed to make the startup slow the first time you play afterwards, but is this it? It's been a few minutes now and nothing's happening, though task manager still claims ME is running.

Except it is listed as UnrealEngine3 with the ME icon ... this is confusing.

For some reason at the end of the installation it asks for a 2nd disk? any ideas what that's about?

Awesome, awesome mod. Thank you so much for all the time you put into this. I've been checking the forum a couple of times a day for the past few weeks. SO looking forward to this replay.

Again, a million thanks. <3

I had that as well. Did you unzip the nine parts into separate folders within the folder you downloaded them into? Like Part1, Part2, etc? I did that at first and got those prompts as well. Had to direct them to the next path every time it finished one to complete the installation.

Afterwards I tried unzipping the files again without creating separate folders for each of them. The installation then ran without interruptions.

The Error I got is

Hi. Same error :crying: http://img819.images...9/1363/mu4j.png
Also frequent standing up to loading texturas, even in one scene textures vary from low to high resolution. Still sort of a problem with the lighting, it turns on and loads the textures only when I pass near, and it is strongly evident.
In addition, has broken translation, now game has ~ 30% english text, 70% russian text (was 100% russian)...
Conf: Intel 3930K, 16 Gb RAM, Nvidia GTX 690, fast SSD 256 Gb.

Hmmm, ok so the pixelly dynamic shadows are now gone, but the shadows on the faces still look blocky and uneven, especially during movement. I don't think the ME2 shaders fix actually worked CDAMJC. At least not for me.

Did you remember to do the Config and delete local shader cache? That fixed it for me and the shaders look amazing.

I can't say enough about this texture pack and I'm such a huge fan of the new installer. Thank you so much.

Yes I did, like I said, the pixelated shadows were removed after installing the fix. Its the regular dynamic shadows, which are still very jagged and blocky looking, but only really noticeable in movement.
