If you are running with Nvidia, use the Nvidia Inspector. A pic with the recommended specs for ME1 was posted a few pages back, just use the same settings and the game should look way better.

Are there the recommended specs for ME1 using the Catalyst Control Center for AMD VGA possessors?

Converted the N7 textures over to ME2 to see how they would look. :)

I had to install the files into a separate folder and then drag-and-drop them into the Mass Effect folder to reach 20GB. Installing directly to the Mass Effect folder only netted 17.3GB or something like that. I don't know why that is.

Now as I try to run the game, it starts, the new splash page shows and then the screen goes black before bouncing me back to the desktop. The ME icon pops up on the taskbar, task manager says ME is running, but if I try to click on the icon the screen just flickers black for a moment before going back to the desktop.

I'm aware that deleting the shadow cache is supposed to make the startup slow the first time you play afterwards, but is this it? It's been a few minutes now and nothing's happening, though task manager still claims ME is running.

Except it is listed as UnrealEngine3 with the ME icon ... this is confusing.

Black screen could take a few minutes after deleting shader cache but only once not everytime you run the game.  The unrealengine3 part is normal if you alt tab out of the game while its running you can see that every time.  I think I would suggest applying LAA to MassEffect.exe to be safe I had to do this on my surface, but I'm not sure if it was hardware or something wondows 8 needed for the game to launch with the mod.

Not sure if you saw my post earlier due to everyone having the black texture issues but I just wanted to ask:

Do you use some sort of fxaa injector and how much of a difference does using the nvidia inspector make?

Nvidia inspector is better if you have an nvidia card, because it gives instructions directly to the driver of the graphic card. For other cards think SweetFX is the best option... it has lot of options but could be a bit compplicated to use for the amount of options.

Well, finally the files are downloading (just 2 remaining). For what I saw, think the best is install this mod in a vanilla version. Aside the shadow, any other bug installing over vanilla?

No driver tweaks I know of but SeetFX injector has pretty nice AA.

Crazy things have been reported that make no sense to me...I wish I had run into these errors on my devices, but my installs worked great so I can't explain why these things are happening yet.  All of the problems happen when the cookedPC folder is less that 20,0GB after install, so some things aren't getting installed for some people, other people say it works flawless...I wish I knew the common facter, I'm sure we'll sort it out soon just keep reporting here.

Alright, so after some extensive testing and fiddling with the bioengine.ini, I've managed to deduce that decreasing the value of the DepthBias will cause more crosshatching within the shadows, as more shadows are added.

CDAMJC, you say you recommend a DepthBias of 0.006, however I'm not entirely sure if your shader fix is even working properly, because with that setting everything has very pronounced crosshatching. I've had better results at 0.020 and above.

CDAMJC, how well does it run on the Surface Pro? Some mobile mass effect sounds awesome.

Not amazing but very playable at 720p low particle effects...everything else maxed.  Probably close to the original 360 version, so a bit of stutter, but playable.

Yeah if you want to remove facial shadows 0.03 will do the trick 0.02 is a little extreme, more aggressive than biowares 0.03 fix anyway.  I like 0.006 personally eventhough in some lighting it can look a bit rough, if you use AO it blends the shadows nicely most of the time.  Unfortunately there is no magic fix for Mass effect Shadows because it the engione is old.

Anyhoo I'm glad you found a setting you like :)

One thing you really have to apply is the LAA patch, so the game can use more than 2GB of RAM, otherwise it will sometimes crash.

I don't use any injectors anymore because Nvidia inspector does this:

Virtually zero jaggies and deep smooth shadows from AO.

If you don't have Nvidia get sweetfx for almost as good AA, it will add a slight blur and you'll have to do some tweaking but you can get close.  Unfortunately you can't get the AO anyother way that I know of.

So weird but I will update things instructing people to do so.

After installing over vanilla with "Bring Down the Sky" my folder is 20.4GB which seems more like it. This time I installed to an empty folder and then pasted the new extracted textures and shader fix into game dir. No black demon eyes but I agree with Crimson, looking at faces in the squad screen is a bit weird due to the shadowy flickering. I didn't apply LAA this time either, and no crashes for me.

on ati cards you can force SSAA antialiasing (which as far as i known, it was the best antialiasing available)
i have "only" a 5770, so i usually limit my setting to a humblest msaa 2x

btw, aren't there some torrent mirror for the mod?
for really big files it's usually preferable

Finally got everything working after a fresh install and some tweaking but one last issue and that's when creating my custom shepard it only seems to use the high res textures on the preset shepard, how do I get the high res textures on a custom made shepard?

Uh? LAA causes crashes?

Also, did you use the new Shadow Fix CDAMJC uploaded?

Minor detail. In the installation, in the first screen, the last message is incomplete. Says "Once you have backed up your original Biogame" and no more. Guess a line was missed.

Yeah, it's just a detail, but for now is how far I get (Just installing, but in a new carpet, 'cause I have to get the vanilla version for the test)

Everything looks great but i couldn't help noticing that some of the grey areas on the N7 armors and chakwas' dress are very flashy, as in they seem to be very sensible to lights. Not a big issue by any means but it does stand out a bit.

SSAA was the best and is if you are using non NVidia, but it is more taxing than sweetfx's AA and also introduces blur. SGSSAA is SSAA using sparse grid computation...I don't really know what it is but the results are the AA quality of SSAA without any texture/image blur. To me its like magic, I did some reading up on it a while back before I started using it and apparently it was a driver tweak by NVidia that was discovered by mistake, they removed it in later drivers, but users demanded it back, so they gave it back.

Also FXAA and SSAA can give close results in other engines with far better performance like in Skyrim or Tomb Raider, unfortunately ME is too old to support these techniques in engine so we have to force it externally. So for Mass Effect based on my eyes and performance weighed in with visual quality weighed a little higher than performance I would recommend SGSSAA, then sweetfx SSAA, then driver forced SSAA.

Good to know, the whole line is there in the set up file for the installer on my end, it seems to be getting cut off only in the installer screen.  I'll take a look when I get home form work.  I'll probably have a new recompile doen sometime this week, to merge the shadow fixes, isert the readme with troubleshooting and any other imnprovements I can think find.

I noticed this on the Surface Pro playing at a lower resolution (720p) without AA the textures shimmered a bit...is this what you are refering to?

Or it could be bloom hitting the lighter colors? If you are using sweetfx or FXAA I would recommend turning bloom/HDR down or off because it can cause severe bleeding of light on some textures, and just using color tweaks and AA.
