Hey CDAMJC

Impressive.. its a really nice improvement on Tali.. the first set of 2 pics clearly show the difference and the added little details really add to the overall effect,

One thing I want to mention is that with all of the changes that you've made to ME, in my opinion its improved the game and made it even more enjoyable. I can only imagine how good it'll look once the all of the NPC's and the environments get the same face lift ..

I've been wondering if it was possible to do a version of the mod with textures at 50% of the resolution, so that you can still get the improvements, hopefully elminate the shimmer when not at 1900x1200 res and without a large drop in fps?

Wow, nice work on Tali!

Does anyone know whether it is possible to change: The "interact" icon and the skyboxes in ME1?
They are classified as environmental textures, right?

The shimmering is not from 4096 res its from some textures not using their mipmaps to get them to render properly.  I have varefully gone through all armors and human skins, in the new version there is shimmering.  Their are side effects to this, in the equipment menu the textures for Tali look slightly low res most people wont see it and character create menu the textures for N7 armor look really low res but after that they are perfect for the rest of the game with no shimmering, so that's the trade off.

That said SSAA shouldn't be needed, try 1900x1200 with no SSAA and see if your frame rate is better.

Also I was contemplating a performance version of all 2048 as max res but that will take time, so I will get the 4k version done first because I am close.  Once that's done 2048 should be easier to make because I'll have all my fixed tpfs formatted and all textures in the proper format, so I'll just need to scale things down and rebuild.

Should be very possible with ME Explorer or even TexMod.  I would use TexMod to log the texture, then copy and paste the hash "0x00000000" from the texmodlog in MEExplorer's advanced search, it should take you right to the texture for perma modding.

Tried 1900x1200 without SSAA the shimer is still there ... where as if iits basically gone with the SSAA on. If I keep SSAA on but switch the AA filter from "edge-detect" to "standard" and 4xAA the fps jumps from 19  when your running, or fighting  to 25-30. Seems to be a slight drop in IQ but its still more looks very good,

Good to know that you've been thinking about a performance version at 2048 .. I think it would still look pretty special.

Yes indeed SSAA removes the shimmer, so logically you would see it shimmer with SSAA off because I haven't released the new version which doesn't shimmer.  When I upload the new version, SSAA won't be needed to eliminate shimmer on armors and human faces.  So I ask only about your frame rate when SSAA is off to see if its better, so you can play that way (or use something less demanding like edge AA) with the new version.  I'm not too concerned with your current Image Quality because I know the current version has shimmer just performance at 1900x1200.

The performance decrease you are seeing, in my opinion, is purley resolution based.  1900x1200 x 4SSAA = 7600x4800 rendered by the card and then scaled down post rendering to fit your screen.  That resolution is slightly higher than 4k displays can output.  The VRAM and horsepower combined to run that resolution are far more demanding than using 4k textures.  Even switching to 2k textures won't create any noticable gain in performance at that resolution.  The insane resolution is why the frame rate crumbles, not the textures.  Even then, if it's playable in the 20 fps area and there are no visual anomolies, then VRAM and therefore texture size is no issue.  It's the raw power required for rendering that resolution that's killing the performance.

So to clarify further, 2048 textures won't necessarily speed up anything they will just require less VRAM (less hitching could be a positive result, but I have some new bioengine.ini tweaks I'm working with to resolve hitching in the 4k version as it's more of an engine thing).  So if your setup currently renders the mod you don't need the 2048 version, it's for people who have low VRAM and the mod won't run for them currently.

If you're not sure if you are running out of VRAM, I can tell you what to look for based on my experiences.  Noticable signs of running out of VRAM are: extreme slow down (teens and single digits), missing textures, visual artifacting/nonsense, and crashing.  Most of the time if you run out of VRAM the game will be unplayable, Mass Effect tends to dump you to the desktop when running out of VRAM.

I am so glad I found this thread, I recently reinstalled ME1 on a new computer after my old computer died. How ever I am facing some serious texture issues, I can't figure out what the problem is. I'm on windows 8, tried compatibility mode ( for xp, vista and 7) and nothing seems to work, the textures just go in and out on walls, characters and the ground. Tried adjusting AA and that didn't help either. I have an Nvidia 770 card and know I can play with some high graphics. Will this mod help? Or is there something better that I can try?

Fearless... I'm running Win8.1 and have had no issues running ME with or without the mod. I was on Win8 previously and didn't have any of the weird issues your reporting. Have you installed the ME1 updates ? So thats 1.01a and 1.02 ? Resetting the nvidia driver to defaults and possibly see if there's an update to it?

When you launch ME, have you tried deleting "the local shader cache files" in the ME Config utility ? You can find that under Repair, that might help. If that fails I'd uninstall ME and install again, its possible something went wrong during the installation.

Not sure that installing the mod's going to help fix the problem .. its definitely worth installing once you can get defaut ME1 to run without issues.

Good to see you're still goin with this CDAMJC, i reinstalled ME1 and fished out the installer earlier in the week, probably wait for the update before the level 60 round 2 playthrough, though!

More Tali armor, this one was a bit more work because it's so different from the others, not simple color swaps etc...

Started a new playthrough.. wanted to make a minor change or 2 to Shep but this time around I'm getting quiet a few GP faults.. the first vist to the wards consistently causes it to bug out when that has never happened before.

Bye the way .. Tali is looking real good. Noticed one of the med human armour on willams looking very low res. I need to make a note of which one it was but i do have a screen shot that i can post.

More Nhilus updates added underlying material to the scratches rather than lines drawn on, for more depth and detail

Most lol.

ME1 has so many armors.

Human sets are six armors per vendor light, medium, heavy, male, and female (I have only done N7 set (Onyx) and Ash's medium Phoenix.

Turian and Krogan are 3 per vendor light medium heavy (I have done C-sec medium armor, medium Turian colossus, Nhilus's phantom, and light Krogan mercenary).

The Quarian armors are done because it was only one per vendor.

Keep in mind the average armor texture has 3 textures the diff (colors and materials you see) the spec (which further defines materials as shiny or dull and gives underlying texture when light bounces off the object) and the normal map (which tells light how to hit the model and emulates a high poly structure on a low poly model). Tali's had 2 spec maps for some reason, but the second spec map was used in all 6 sets, so I only had to do it once.

So a full human armor set will typically be 18 textures just for 1 vendor hence I haven't finished many of them.

Nice work on Nihlus! Can't wait to try this in-game ;)

Also wanted to ask, is it possible for you to re-texture the human helmets?
Just to give them that ME2 feel? You know, lights and stuff ;)

I've uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times. I have updated it as well, people tell me that it's just an old game but it works on my Windows 7 laptop.  I'm not exactly sure how to set my driver to default? I was having this problem on all my other games until I updated my Nvidia driver now all the others work while this one spazzes with textures.

I've tried deleting the "the local shader cache files" in the Config, but I honestly don't know if it really deleted them or not. I don't really know what to look at to see if it did. I'm glad to see that it should work on Win 8.1 though! It gives me hope!

Do you think there's anything else I could try?

I had it and ME2 running without any problems on Win7, so it should just work - you could try running the installer by right clicking on it and select "run as administrator" and select a different location to install to so to c:\\Mass Effect and see if that makes a difference.

I think that this is more of a driver issue - there should be an option to reset the driver to default and you might want to create a new game app profile for ME- found this online, so I'd try this first:

"Go into nvidia control panel, CUSTOM PROFILE, not global settings, add masseffect.exe and the .exe for mass effect 2, ovveride AA settings and set it to whatever you want. "

There may also be an Nvidia Driver removal tool which would remove all traces of the driver, control panels etc and allow you to do a clean install of the driver.
