Thanks for this mod; I finally got around to installing it and I absolutely love how the various characters/outfits look now.

Also tried AA/AO settings given above (Nvidia GTX 780ti) and can verify the AO looks decent, but still displays outline shadows around distant fogged objects (most recently terrain on some side worlds), and soon I'll find out if it does the same to Sovereign's body/fingers as I'm making my way up the tower. Had this issue before using default ME1 AO flag and it was jarring enough I disabled AO. I'm using High Quality at the moment. No ENB. AA set to 4x/4x.

Also, as a side effect of the larger textures I notice when I go to re-enter the Normandy from the Citadel, the scan repeats half a dozen times while Normandy's textures load. It's nothing critical and I treat it like another elevator ride.

Edit: added a bit more info. Also by disabling DoF and blur my game looks as good as the below screenshots, without ENB or SweetFX. Love being able to see the fabric mesh in clothing, etc.

Using a little bit of ENB + SweetFX I've made the game looks even nicer imo.

Here's the link if anyone wants to try it for me. :)

You seem to have redundant SMAA and Bloom settings between SweetFX and ENB.

Oh the SMAA was optional, I'm using SGSSAA through Nvidia, the ENB was just to add a small extra detail.

Sometimes the modding community, well I'm just so happy to be involved in all of this:

MUST HAVE SOFT SHADOW FIX!!!

From Daemonjax @ SBN:

"So, I went ahead and implemented proper soft shadows (drop box link below).

It's not perfect, but it's a serious improvement and good enough for me right now. If you don't actually sit and stare at the dynamic shadow edges, they're pretty passable in most lighting conditions.

The biggest obstacle is the low shadowmap size. The engine will not create a shadowmap larger than 1024x1024 under any conditions that I could find. 2k shadowmaps is the bare minimum for quality shadows under all conditions. In most situations 1k is OK (running around, etc), but during conversations the camera is often extremely close to the rendered target, so it's noticeable.

If someone wants to beat me to it (the shaders below are probably good enough to see me through another playthrough), the next step would be to implement a filtering shader pass on the shadow map to double it's effective resolution before the refinement stage of the PCF shadowing shader happens... there's at least two ways to accomplish that. This only needs to be done in the unmodulated lighting shader path, as that is the one used during most conversations... everywhere else the modulated path is taken, which looks fine (it has other problems with multiple light sources, but whatever) as it seems to only be used during conversations where you're not so close. I wouldn't bother with more passes until that's done, but I'm already losing interest because (like I said) what I've done is probably good enough for me and another playthrough -- this time with dynamic shadows enabled.

Anyways, thanks again.

Original VFX render style file incase someone needs that:

PS: Forcing AF through radeon pro seems to remedy any mipmap wonkiness.

TLDR: I implemented soft dynamic shadows. No fps hit -- link above, do whatever you want with it. Thanks again for your mod."

Thank you Daemonjax this is amazing :)

my response to Daemonjax @ SBN:

"You are a genius!

This is 1000x better!

7 years and someone (you) have finally fixed ME shadows.

I am playing around a bit with the Bioengine.ini but they are definitely working and the amazing thing is, I began not to notice them. Which is the point, they are so soft and natural they stop standing out!!

This is a must have, you definitely may want to think about hosting it here as a mod. I will recommend it in the readme's on the next update to my mod. No one should play without this.

For now I am going to share your link on 2 other sites.

Thank you again so much, what a difference.

Mod of the year!"

I was looking at the shadow stuff the other day with Notepad++ and looking at the difference between ME1 + 2 and it was really minor, now I see some lengthy tech wizardry done Daemonjax.

So switching the SMAA and Bloom in the ENB .ini to 0 would spare resources and still produce the results you're after ?

Yes, you might not even notice the difference in brightness anyway.  :P

Except now I have to compare it to Daemonjax's SweetFX stuff to do a mashup.  B)

What's with anisotropic filter in RadeonPro which you couldn't already get with

Trilinear=TRUE
MaxAnisotropy=16

?

My -- quite possibly erroneous -- understanding is that if it's forced from the driver you get the processing from the latest Nvidia/AMD/whatever version of the tech, whereas if set in the game you might get what existed way back then. So, in doubt...

Just a quick question. I'm about to start a trilogy run of Mass Effect (finally have the time to do it!). I'm starting with ME1 and this wonderful mod that brings this ME1 up to spec in the graphics department. The only issue is that on the initial post, it says I need 9 parts for the mod, but on the download page I see only 7. Am I missing something?

Also, just rapidly checked through this thread, and it seems there are new components and improvements that aren't displayed in the initial post (Soft Shadows as an example just above me). If someone could just point me towards some big improvements/mod additions I would be grateful  :) .

EDIT: I decided to go ahead and install the 7 parts to the mod. Installation went successfully, but now when I try to boot the game it crashes. Anything in particular I should check?

If I am not mistaken, there is a link for a torrent which includes an installer. You don't have to download each part individually.

Follow the instructions on the first page, be sure you have installed LAA and made the engine fixes.

The only crucial point that isn't included in the first page is the shadows, FXAA, ENB and some other stuff like that. IMO just do the shadow thing above, it works out great.

Well, I checked the engine fixes for typos, I installed LAA on the MassEffect.exe, and I did downloaded all 7 parts and did the install. I tried the torrent link, but do you need a specific program to open it? Shouldn't the install work just as fine if I did it manually (downloaded 7 parts then ran the install exe file) ?

My torrent version has 9 parts, along with a MEUITM.EXE. I just ran that and installed.

Maybe try re-downloading from the torrent link: http://www.moddb.com...tm-torrent-link

That includes all parts as well as the installed like in the image above. Way more convenient.

I don't know if my file is glitching, but when I download from the site you linked, I get a zip file called: MEUITM060214torrent.zip, and when I extract the file that's in there (MEUITM060214.torrent), I can't run it, and it asks me to choose a program to run it off of. If I open it in Notepad, I get some random links. Are these it?

I guess you haven't ever downloaded a torrent?

There are a lot of clients to do so, I tend to use Bittorrent. http://www.bittorrent.com/get-started.

Once you have it installed, run the link you downloaded from the MODB site (MEUITM060214.torrent) and it should open automatically. Once it finishes downloading you can open it in your download folder :)

Yeah I got the memo from my Dad when I was young: ''Stay away from torrents, or else you'll get viruses and break your PC!''. Never used them, that's why I had asked if I needed a particular program to run it. Thanks again  ;)

By the way, can I install this 9 part mod directly over the 7 part mod I used, or do I need a vanilla install of ME1 ?

Your dad is a very wise man. But this is from a trusted source, lots of people downloaded it and have no problem with it. That is how you separate good from bad torrents.

I'm not sure, I would advice a vanilla install though.

Don't worry. I know if you watch your sources and have a good antivirus there is little to worry about. Hopefully I can install a fresh copy of Mass Effect, install the mod, and by tonight I'll be watching the Normandy preparing for it's shakedown run  :)

I've been downloading torrent for quite a while now, and never run into any problems, whatsoever. You won't get viruses if you have even half the common sense required to not click on the "Your PC's performance could get better!" and "You have a virus!" ads on random websites. As long as you stay on good websites like Piratebay for KAT.

****, I don't know how to edit my posts here.

On a more related topic, I've been lurking on this topic for quite a while now, and I was wondering if everything is going okay with this project, seeing as it suddenly died down here for a while.

Its summer, everyone is on vacation!  :wizard:

Yeah, I've never ever had a problem with torrents, but that is because I have experience on PC's. Other people make laughable decisions.

Anyway, when you post you need to reload the page in order for the "EDIT" button to apppear at the lower right corner of your post.
