I installed bg2 successfully, but it has several glitches that I can't figure out how to fix.

-my dialog options are automatically chosen.  There is a brief flash of the standard comment and possible chosen responses with numbers next to them, but the top one is highlighted in white and it continues onto the next part of the dialog.

-Any noise, after the automated scenes, gets into a broken record mode.  The first syllable, or first couple of syllables are repeated endlessly over and over again until I go to the options screen, and then continue when I return.

-It won't let me select characters.  Sometimes one character will be selected, without letting me click on another.  Sometimes it will start out with all of them selected but won't let me select an individual character.  Sometimes no characters are selected and it won't let me select any of them.

-If I try to investigate a table to take goods from it, the list of items available for taking doesn't show up in the dialog box.  There is a brief flash in the dialog box area of something appearing and then disappearing.

-character names and saved game names are automatically filled in as something like 242424242424242424242424242 or 048048048048048048048048048048.  When I try to delete the numbers, they are automatically replaced.   This problem happened after I messed with some settings....before that the names of things would type in and delete from right to left instead of left to right.

I've been toying with the game settings and the config settings.  The only thing that has worked has been turning off character selection and command sounds.  I can't figure out what made the numbers start appearing in the names, rather than the right to left typing.  And I have no idea what effects which characters are selected when I start the game.

If anyone has any experience with any of these problems or has an idea of what settings I need to fiddle with, it would be greatly appreciated.

I downloaded the Gibberlings 3 patch for widescreen, but it didn't do anything except make the game look better when running in full screen mode.

Did you patch the game? This sounds like a problem, I've had with BG2 untill I patched the game.
Also, have you installed Throne of Bhaal. I think there's a sticky somewhere that'll direct to where you still can download the patches for this game. [I've found one location on strategy informer, another on sorcer's net and a third on gamefront, former filefront...]

Can you tell us what version of BG2 you're using, the original discs, the 4-1-box edition or another edition. The reason I'm asking is because based on my experience reading this forums for about a year now, there seem to be at least 2-4, if not more versions around of both BG2 - and BG1. If it is the GOG version of BG2, it should come fully patched, I think?

I seem to remember from the old BG2 legacy forums (that's on a longer hiatus right now) that when people did have a media center pc, something similar to what the OP is describing would sometimes happen. I can't remember what the solution was though. Sorry :( I think maybe the fiddled around in the bg2.ini a bit, but I can't remember what they turned on or off. Sorry again :(

Gate70's question of having a wireless keyboard or mouse or both might seem silly; it is not. For playing games, it is generally advised to play with a cord mouse and keyboard. Sometimes playing with wireless keyboard or mouse, or both, have the effects, you describing - sometimes it won't.

And the Gibberlings 3 thing to enhance widescreen use is technically a mod(ification) to the game, although I understand why you call it a patch. If you haven't patched the game to the latest version,. I suggest you do so :)
