First time I actually had to micromanage my way through a fight in this game.

You are given a warning by Tallis (sp?) to stay away, and it's good advice as you will need to backtrack anyhow- and for what? Just a stupid battle and garbage that is worthless. I never hold back and crushed them all, and the 'boss' was tricky only because of the temporary barrier while you squish his minions. I don't know if it was because of high levels or that I played after the game was over instead of during a playthrough.

Brittle + Drop dead combo (Tallis ability) is extremely effective against the horror. I was able to take down its health by 40% in one shot.

Yes, the barrier is the main thing that makes this battle tricky. While my party was distracted by the minions with the sky horror hiding behind the barrier, it came back over and instantly used that death cloud attack, killing Tallis.
After that point, my party focused on the sky horror and took them out, but without that barrier, this is a much quicker, far less eventful battle.
Elemental resist runes are your friend, along with crowd control spells. Generally, fire and spirit resist runes are the most useful to have on your armor at all times in case you run into a dragon, an arcane horror or Corypheus.
