It seems like this guy deserves a thread for himself!

what class of hawke do you play as and who did you bring? as an archer rogue on nightmare i mainly just make sure to not get pounced on. I have anders us haste, bethany hex of torment, and myself mark of death eventually. one pounce would kill my rogue because i put nearly all attribute points into cunning to get massive critical hits, hence the don't get pounced on part...a good policy in general. while probably not the most efficient, by doing this, i killed the alpha wyvern pretty quickly on my first try.

I found crushing prison quite effective.

Avoiding the pounce is pretty important, I used warrior Hawke and Aveline to keep his attention as much as possible, almost like a matador with a bull, if he did taget someone else I kept them moving.

As others said, he isn't to bad, except for his pounce. Hold your mages/archers back and don't cluster them. If everything fails, the wyvern is quite vulnerable to one of the oldest and cheapest tactics: Kiting. One time, my warrior Hawke and one companion were already down, the wyvern relentlessly followed Bethany accross the battlefield while Tallis wore it slowly down. Not elegant, but it works.

The first time I fought it I died horribly, the second time I cast gravitic ring on it and it glitched out and ended up paralysed for the entire fight. I reloaded because it felt too cheap.

I ended up using things like Gravitic Ring, Petrify, etc to slow it down while my hasted companions attacked it. I used Aveline to keep it's attention, while Isabel and Tallis attacked it from behind. Everyone was basically dead by the time it went down. (This was on Nightmare).

The alpha wasn't that hard.. one mark of death + hex of torment + brittle-assassinate CCC killed it pretty fast.

What was hard was Duke Prosper's pet. Bloody Leopold. It had the nasty habit of one-shotting my party members (they are all really glassy) and following hawke around even after stealthing/decoying. That whole fight was such a pain.

Indeed. I couldn’t manage to survive the third phase on nightmare. I wonder if BW ever
makes any balancing test before release.

As a rogue I used Decoy to keep it occupied while the rest of the party attacked from behind. Seemed to work!

Aveline, **** can't be knocked down (if you have her talent Indomitable [100% Stun/Knockdown resistance]), so its charge/pounce just runs into a brick wall of awesome. Only death I had was Tallis and that's because she kept teleporting in front the wyvern via Drop Dead. This was using a berserker/reaver S&S shield warrior Hawke with Tallis set up to toss goads on Aveline.

This is of course if you take Aveline with you.

I beat the Alpha Wyvern by trapping him with Gravitic ring and Pull of the Abyss and using long range attacks on him.

With any class of Hawke you can kill the Alpha but (litterally) running circles around him.  He'll try a roar which can stun you so watch for that if you don't have immunity to stun.  And otherwise he just attempts melee attacks.  Once you lock him into this you can have him pretty much chasing his own tail (well, ok, one of your party memembers) and have the rest of the team just pour on the hurt.  This is much easier if you have at least one ranged character (which you always will because of Tallis) but I've actually had my Dog kill him on NM using this method (note, I don't reccomend actually using only Dog however because it will take a sickening amount of time, but it can in fact be done).

In short, dodge the first pounce then run circle around him while everyone else does the damage.  And if you're on NM (like I  was) watch for friendly fire/turn off any tactics which will get your "matador" character killed.

Kiting him around with Tallis, Varric, or whoever he was chasing. As long as you avoid the charge attack (Which happens pretty quick) he's not a problem.

Learn the charge warm-up animation. He gives you some warning, so anybody but an archer or a mage on the last autoattack animation/in the middle of an AoE cast should be able to get out of the way in time. You can also interrupt it with a well-placed Silence (Tallis is quite useful for this, have her open the fight with it).

Other than that it's as RoseLegion says. Get his attention on your warrior (or, hell, your dual-wielder if you're reasonably durable), then lead him in a little circle. Strike-strike-strike then move sideways to his flank, strike-strike-strike again. Make sure you have at least one character who both a) is stun-immune and B) can manage threat - ideally, the character you're using to keep his attention - because his roar effect lasts a long time. And if he gets in a hit, toss off a heal immediately. Aveline's about the only one who can tolerate two in a row.

Same thing works for Leopold, but even better. Whoever the Duke marks with his green stuff, just... run in that same stab-stab-move-to-flank circle, and you can do anything you please with the others, generate all the threat in the universe, pour on all your most hardcore combos and beastliness, and he will not stop helplessly chasing your marked sucker.

Other way around for me, unfortunately. Found it very hard to kill the Alpha, had to knock it down to normal, whereas I could beat Leopold and the Duke on hard.

He just charged out for me. And I think he is too big to be affected by Pull into the Abyss.

Its the charge that is the killer. Otherwise he is easy enough to kill if your party is setup properly.

Hmm... maybe I just got lucky or there was a glitch with Gravitic ring as someone else mentioned.. At least he was slowed enough by Gravitic ring for met to deal some serious damage with long range attacks and Firestorm. Eventually he managed to get out of it when the spell effect ended. Then it was about spreading the team mates around and do some good old kiting watching for every sign that he would charge and move everyone a little bit at the same time.
