Well I decided to start some new Mass Effect 1 playthroughs since I figured it would be nice to explore some more concepts of Shepard that I had in mind. Thus Anderson Shepard, AKA "High and Tight" Shepard, is born. He is a very "military," straight to the point, no bull**** Marine, 90% Paragon morality but has no problems eliminating scum when convenient. Given that the whole characterization of this Shepard is to be an iron skinned guy, I planned for him to not have any love interests.
So I get this conversation with Liara where she talks about looking up my service history and whatnot, and it eventually gets to the point where she says she's interested in me. I straight up say I'm not attracted to her.
Things seem to be going well, until...
I finish Virmire and report back to the Citadel and learn the Normandy has been grounded. I return to the Normandy, pissed off, sulking by the lockers when Liara walks by. OK, maybe this is just someone who comes by to comfort me, regardless of whether or not I had a love interest. We go through our conversation, THEN my Shepard grabs Liara, attempts to kiss her, but Joker cuts in.
Now I'm like WTF. I totally did not romance Liara.
So I'm trying to figure out what happened, so I load up my "Evil Genius" Kane Shepard (who has no LI's because he treats everyone like ****) to the same point, and see that when he's by the lockers, Joker just gives him a message to meet Anderson, rather than having any squadmate come over. So somehow, the romance flag for Liara got activated for Anderson, and I'm trying to figure out how. I do remember having a conversation with her about her virginity after I explicitly rejected her, but was that somehow supposed to trigger a relationship with her?
Anyway, I hope stuff like this, AKA "ninjamancing," does not happen in Mass Effect 3, because right now, I really do not want to replay 10+ hours of missions and sidequests just to make sure Anderson Shepard is single again.
