So I usually generate most of my Mass Effect 2 characters from Mass Effect 1 savegames played by other people. Why? I have this sort of love-hate relationship with the original Mass Effect. The game is alright - it's pretty fun, but doing a lot of the stuff in it is a real chore, such as the repetitive sidequests, the very unrefined gunplay, and the OGODAWFUL planets you have to drive the Mako on. I like the story and all but it's something that I really have to make myself play, so in the end I've done 4-5x more playthroughs of Mass Effect 2 than of Mass Effect 1.

Well I decided to start some new Mass Effect 1 playthroughs since I figured it would be nice to explore some more concepts of Shepard that I had in mind. Thus Anderson Shepard, AKA "High and Tight" Shepard, is born. He is a very "military," straight to the point, no bull**** Marine, 90% Paragon morality but has no problems eliminating scum when convenient. Given that the whole characterization of this Shepard is to be an iron skinned guy, I planned for him to not have any love interests.

So I get this conversation with Liara where she talks about looking up my service history and whatnot, and it eventually gets to the point where she says she's interested in me. I straight up say I'm not attracted to her.

Things seem to be going well, until...

I finish Virmire and report back to the Citadel and learn the Normandy has been grounded. I return to the Normandy, pissed off, sulking by the lockers when Liara walks by. OK, maybe this is just someone who comes by to comfort me, regardless of whether or not I had a love interest. We go through our conversation, THEN my Shepard grabs Liara, attempts to kiss her, but Joker cuts in.

Now I'm like WTF. I totally did not romance Liara.

So I'm trying to figure out what happened, so I load up my "Evil Genius" Kane Shepard (who has no LI's because he treats everyone like ****) to the same point, and see that when he's by the lockers, Joker just gives him a message to meet Anderson, rather than having any squadmate come over. So somehow, the romance flag for Liara got activated for Anderson, and I'm trying to figure out how. I do remember having a conversation with her about her virginity after I explicitly rejected her, but was that somehow supposed to trigger a relationship with her?

Anyway, I hope stuff like this, AKA "ninjamancing," does not happen in Mass Effect 3, because right now, I really do not want to replay 10+ hours of missions and sidequests just to make sure Anderson Shepard is single again.

I never had a problem with ninjamancing, but that's because I'd heard about it and didn't talk to Liara AT ALL.

i think her romance is bugged or something, only a certain response actually ends it

WHY YOU WOULD EVER DO THIS IS BEYOND MY COMPREHENSION

Why does everyone seem to have a problem avoiding a relationship with Liara? It really hasn't been that hard for me.

Ashley is as bad or even worse.
I was one time too nice to her, after I rejected Liara and in the next conversation all suddenly she and my Shepard talk about is having sex, with no options for Shepard to say that he is not into her.

Well the next stop was Virmire.Image IPB

There is some improvement in ME2. It is still very easy to start a romance without intent (I am looking at you Jack) but at least you can back out of them as soon as you notice what you started.

If you mean not romancing Liara, it's because choosing any LI's would be inconsistent with the characterization of that particular Shepard I made. She might be an option for any other Shepards I make.

I never romance any squad members in ME serie. I have learn to avoid these issues simple not talking them at all or very little. As for general comment, have romance or not, that is choise of every player to make. Like what kind of personality your Shepard has.

Indeed. Just don't talk too much to her and you won't get "ninjamanced". Same for Ashley (or Kaidan), if you don't like her (him). It's really easy to go through ME without relationships. It is, however, also quite easy to get in a relationship if you're nice to your ppl.

It seems resurrection via Science© has rectified the ninjamancing of pre-Cyber-Zombie Shepard. I figure its pheromone regulators, maybe some kinda Asari bits were addended in along with that Krogan Quad upgrade, ya know, to replicate pre-Cyber-Zombie Shepard's "charms".

In one playthrough, my male Shepard was friendly and talked to Liara whenever he could. The romance didn't trigger.

In another playthrough, my female Shepard was insulting her as much as possible. Still no romance.

My last playthough was a mix of being rude and polite to her. Liara didn't end up ninjamancing my female Shepard.

Ashley is fairly easy to avoid romancing; just pick the middle-left option "You're out of line!" in one of the early conversations Shepard has with her on the Normandy. Otherwise just being nice to her is enough to start a romance.

When turning Liara down, if Shepard divulged how he/she feels about Ash/Kaidan then picking the bottom "Your were wrong" option flags the romance anyways.   You have to either choose the middle option that says something about being friends, or say that your relationship with Ash/Kaidan is none of her business beforehand which then allows you to choose the lower right option without triggering the romance.

With Liara you have to pick the "Let's just be friends option" and not "You thought wrong" when she asks if you're into her.

Retarded, but there.

Yeah, it's a bug.  The Renegade rejection line activates the romance flag and the only way ot stop it is to romance Ash or Kaidan and then pick them at the confrontation scene.

You could romance Ash and then Virmire her, but that might not be good for roleplaying if your Shep isn't interested in her.

I thought it was possible to dump Liara at the lockers? or does it only work for Ashley and Kaidan?

Rejecting them at the lockers doesn't necessarily end the romance.

it does for Kaidan and Ashley.  there is no almost kiss, they don't show up before Ilos and the portrait is not there on import.

you are confusing it with rejecting them before Ilos.  in case of that scene, yes, sending them away still keeps the romance active.

lockers is the last chance you get.  not sure about Liara though, never tried with her.

Yes, bugged renegade option at PC version.

Hm, lockers? I thought picking both first and second renegade option will stop advances of any NPC, so it's another way out of romance.

Liara doesn't give up that easy.

ITs easy toreject her, just do her mission after Virmire and she will think that you are an hallucination. YOu can be an ass with her with the remaining dialogue that you can do with her and the romance won't be flagged.

You can be nice to her as well and the romance still won't flag. I figure you used "be an ass" because your not a fan of her though.

Yeah the whole renegade no being bugged made me rage quit my first game.
That was annoying and made Liara look pathetic.

I made a character dedicated to cheating on Kaidan with Garrus just to see how it would work out in ME3. I did all of the romance dialog, taking the top-right option every time. When I walk by Kasumi, she says "Sooo, you and Kelly huh?" No idea what she meant.

Then, I activate the suicide mission. No Garrus. I just look at the picture of a whiny douchebag I don't like, and then stroll off. What?
