Importing a waste of resources?

In all the games that have had the import option so far, none have really made any significant enough a difference to continue having it in the game. This is why I find it  a waste of resources and time, which could perhaps be put to better use in other areas of the current game in development.

Besides, there seems to be a high chance of the choices, which you transfer, being bugged. So is there really much point of having this transfer, unless the decisions in the previous game have more effect on the new game?

Another way would be to simply have a choice selection at the beginning of the new game, where you can input the decisions you made in the previous game. It would surely be less likely to be effected by bugs, and I guess would be cheaper and quicker to create than the current system.

So would you prefer the resources being placed elsewhere, or do you think that the current way is alright?

The import is a reward to people who bought and played DAO. The 3 standard options cover almost all the possible endings that a player can get so there is no need to play DAO before DA2. However it is very good customer relationship to provide a reward for those who bought and played the previous game.

I think Mass Effect 2 did a good job with the import system. I tried many different Shepards and all worked well for me. I really enjoyed this gameplay element.

With DA2, though, it was horrible. As many other aspects of the game, shows the little respect the dev team had for the original game. Origins had lots of potential for import value; instead, we have a resurrected Leliana and bugged flags. There are some exceptions, though -Nathaniel and the deep roads optional quest was cool.

The import is a good way for the people who have never played DAO or DA2, in this import is a bit of info of who rules where and what happen at the end of the game. I don't think making a long list of things that this player never experience will be good, with a little info however this players are inclines to buy the olders games.

Except he was heavily bugged as well. I love the idea of an import but I'm actually inclined to agree if it's like it was in DA 2. If the end result is minimal impact that doesn't even work half the time, then perhaps it's better to try a system like Kotor 2 or Mask of the Betrayer where you select what happened in the previous game.

I think it can probably be done right. Like the Witcher 2 for example I think did it decently...

I agree with the OP. I have yet to see an import system that worked well. Most of them just add a sidequest or two or make casual mention of past events. This is why I don't understand why people think the OGB is going to be a big deal. It was one option in three. It can't possibly have a huge impact on the series because there is a very good chance it never happened in any one particular game. Plus, with a series of games, the possible choices keep adding up, meaning more and more branches. Bioware can't possibly have each choice have some sort of impact in a later game.

Personally, I would prefer it if Bioware scrapped the import system and just improved the choice and consequences in game. I would rather see the consequences of my actions within the game itself rather than get a stupid epilogue mention with the vague promise of the choice having an effect in a later game.

I suppose the amount of choice in origins made the import difficult since many of the main characters can die. It worked a lot better with mass effect 2 with Conrad Verner being the only glaring anomaly.

I'd hate to see it go though. Motivates me to do a number of playthroughs.

Importing is amazing if done correctly. I love seeing decisions that I've made be evident across multiple games and heros. With 'Mass Effect', I'm really invested in the story and how things are going to turn out in ME3 because I'm able to feel like I've been playing as Shepard for so long. However, when things don't work properly for whatever reason, it can be quiet maddening. I loved 'Origins', and I love DA2, but the amount of things that ended up wrong with my import was highly disappointing and I can't help but feel like any kind of real consequences are yet to be seen in any meaningful way.

I think in DA2's defense, you weren't in Ferelden anymore so not how much did you really expect to carry over? On the other hand, yeah, DA2 had very little imported. But I couldn't see places where things I did back in Ferelden would have applied to anything going on in Kirkwall.

As for ME, you always knew that your decisions were going to come back in the end, so them not being a big part of ME2 was acceptable to me. Although it works better in ME because it is a continuous story line.

I feel really bad for people who had bugged romance imports (including myself,) but I still want imports to remain a part of the series. To me, it enhances the feeling that Thedas is an entire huge world with things going on in different locations, instead of just in the current game you are playing.

THe import was pretty useless for this game and unbelievably bugged out. So yes it was pointless and the resources could have been spent elsewhere.
