Okay, I finally got the change to read your opinion on the game.
I mostly agree with you. Especially with the fist combat. I played U1 a couple of days ago, and I remember that it was very useful on harder difficulties to take down the enemy with pressing "square, triangle, square", instead of just button mash the square button until the foe is down. This gives the chance--as you said-- to avoid other foes in the area.
And the antagonist in the game, well their goals where a little cloudy, but I think ND left the "use of the water thing" to your imagination. Marlowe and Talbot was that same secret organization centuries ago, and that organization spyed and tried to control their enemies, and with that power they would get from the water in Arabia, it would be exactly what they wanted. So yeah, they wanted "power", but that was their goal.
And Talbot, yeah their relationship is never explained, and I as well didn't enjoy that, but I think that was the case with Talbot. He was this mysterious ellusive man who could survive bullets, disappear in seconds, used different weapons, and so forth. I think ND wanted this guy to be something of great mystery.

SPOILER ALERT:
I'm of the opinion that Marlowe and Talbot were unaware of exactly what the "vessel" contained other than it would allow them to pursue power...
...otherwise, why not just use an existing, or manufacture your own, hallucinogen!?

^Perhaps. But it still doesn't change much. Their goal was never shown.

I just saw the review of Uncharted: 3 by Yahtzee, and I have to say that I agree 100% with his analysis. Uncharted started getting way too formulaic, and by the time I got to Uncharted: 2, I was actually sick of seeing the same exact themes from the beginning. I might still get Uncharted: 3 when it goes down in price, but I'm not going to expect praising it like I did the first one. If you want so see it, google zero punctuation--I'm too lazy to post the link.
