Yes, get it!
Yes, the gameplay is different, but that doesn't automatically mean you won't like it. I like both, they're just different is all and in a way, that makes replaying them with a new character all the more interesting.
As for class, I'd say try something new. I come at it from the other direction, my preferred class being adept, and I was very happily surprised at how much I enjoyed the soldier and iniltrator classes when I tried. I can reccomend them all (except engineer because I haven't tried that one yet.)
Besides, it'll be incredibly cheap nowadays, no?
Should I get Mass Effect 1

I say go for it!
The atmosphere of the game is much more different than in ME2. The music is beatiful, and it feels like a sci-fi from the 80s (kinda). Combat is different, but nothing major braking I would say. Adept though is little over powered

I think you should, however it's entirely up to you. A lot of players who started off with ME2 and play ME1 dislike the gameplay and the Mako.
I suggest playing as a Vanguard in ME1, simply because of Marksman. It makes it so you shoot super fast, and don't overheat. I know other classes have the skill too, but being a vanguard, you have a "refresh CDs" ability and at a high enough level, you can continuously use Marksman. ;D

The games are really different. I also started with the second game. When I first started playing I felt weak and hated my squad mates. After playing through it I am very much inlove with the first game!
For one the impression you get of Kaiden/Ashley in the second game sucks. In the first Ashley is my hero. The woman is a hardcore tank! Sure she's a bit of a racist and very aggresive, but she always backs me up and is always first to be my human shield. Kaiden is an airhead, but not so hateworthy that I thought after the second game. He's actually pretty usefull.. And I adore bugging him.. Tali hates me, but I find her to be a very deep character as well. Then you have Liara and Garrus which are also pretty cool.
I would recomend playing the first game just based on the crew, but the rest of the game rules to. The story line feels much more detailed and deep in the first game. A lot of things about the reapers, Saren, the protheans and the geth botherd me in the second game, but it's all fully explained in the first. It's really engageing!
The only bad thing is the system is a lot more advanced and detailed in the first game. The second seems simplefied.. That takes some getting used to, but once that was dealt with I had the time of my life! It was awsome!!

I don't get how anyone could hate the mako. It was like a huge overeager puppy with a cannon... Lol.. I made it my personal mission to try to flip it on it's head, but the thing always bumps back up...

Unless Gameplay is the more important things for you and you really are on ME2 action-like gameplay, I recommand it to you.
For the class, it's really more a gameplay things that anything else, so choose just regarding to your playstyle.

If you think ME1's gameplay sucks when you get it, just play it for the story, characters and atmosphere. One pretty cool thing I've noticed is that Saren actually fits Aristotle's idea of a tragic figure quite nicely.

If your a big fan of shooters you may find ME game play frustrating but I would still recommend you try it regardless, it has a much better main story then ME2.

Mass Effect was the game that almost got me to buy a 360 because I had tried it out on a friends 360 and loved it, and then they put it out on PC, which is my preferred platform anyway. While I love the characters, Mass Effect 2 isn't nearly as great an entry point in the series, even with the comic. I really love the story in ME1, but I prefer the gameplay a bit more in 2. I just wish 2 had a deeper RPG element to it. Plus there are a lot more options that transfer over from ME1 that just aren't options in the comic at all. Of course there are a few that don't transfer correctly at all, but there's a wiki page for that I think. I would definitely recommend getting the first game.

I started with ME2 on the ps3 during the psn downtime. As sad as it sounds I did buy an xbox recently just so I could playthru both ME1 & 2. ME1 is a good game and tbh hasn't aged that badly in the graphics department when compared with 2. Its also the little touches you see in 2 when you import a character that helps link them together better and make it feel less like a standalone game.

I only came to the franchise in the last few months, and ME1 still played great, it hasn't noticably aged (like say, trying to play FF7 or 8 now would be an underwhelming experience)

? I liked both.
"ME3 is the best place to enter the trilogy" so no, don't buy ME1 because BW has set it up so everything in ME1 doesn't matter.... you'll just get some bull comic choice at the start of ME3, "thanks for being loyal hardcore fans, now open up wide as we feed you sh!t" DA2 and ME2 killed the first games, guess we'll enjoy mail coverage of things we spent over one hundred hours doing for each "different" playthrough.
Doesn't fly with my friends and I but theres plenty of casual gamers out there who'll eat it up and think its strawberries, fifty/fifty about buying ME3 however we've already come this far so we might as well buy the last game although that'll be the end of that. BW or EA, whoever pulled the strings for ME2 and DA2 have lost at least six customers due to efforts to maximise profits while reducing quality of RPG content.
PS. Maybe three of those six will come back to BW some day due to their cattle like behaviour.
Edit: ME2 makes the actions of Nazara seem like a complete waste.... after the Rachni idea failed couldn't he have set off his little distress becon thing that caused the other Reapers to head back anyway? the tech wouldn've been two thousand years less advanced allowing them to take zero casualties or why wasn't the Collector ships helping his Geth fleet when it attacked the citadel?

I started with Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 and I've already pre-ordered the third game. I don't intend to repurchase all three for the Xbox 360, haha.
What I found really helpful was watching youtube videos of people's playthroughs. I watched this one, made by another forum member who has edited everything down to the epic story segments: http://social.biowar...index/5738603/1
I've never played the first game, but after watching that I really have a deeper appreciation for the setting and the characters. It helps that I generally play paragon female, of course. Sometimes I think about a mission and reflect on how fun it was, and then I realize that I've never played the damn thing.
