"Whether you're a seasoned Spectre looking to suit up again, or a newcomer who has never set foot on the Normandy". Mass Effect 1 is a must play also dont forget the downloadable expansions "Bring Down the Sky" and "Pinnacle Station"

Bring Down the Sky was pretty great, but Pinnacle Station? Really? Image IPB

OP

Let's put it this way.

When you eat a pbj, is the bread the best part? Probably not. But would you eat peanut butter and jelly by itself? Maybe. But it would be messy.

It's the bread that brings it together. The bread that converts it from a delicious but sticky soup, to an organized and delictable meal. Sure, the peanut butter and jelly may be the stars, but it's the bread that makes them a sandwich.

Well, sometimes I do eat both straight from the jar and it still tastes pretty great...but nice comparison either way. Image IPB

Also what about my Kestrel armor and my Dlc's weapons will they also import into ME3?

Nope. That mattock you constantly see in the gameplay vids doesn't really exist, it's an illusion.

I agree with the consensus. Yes, buy Mass Effect if you have a PC or Xbox360. It's only $20 on both platforms, its available digitally, and you have 5 months before Mass Effect 3 comes out. Better to start Mass Effect 3 with a full grasp of the story instead of a "last time on Mass Effect" summary. Besides, Genesis only gives you a high level overview of the story.

Agreed.  Unless there is some pay-off in Mass Effect 3, Pinnacle Station was really a waste of $5 in my opinion.

^And you miss lots of cameos from ME1 peeps if you use Genesis (Gianna Parsini, Helena Blake, Shiala, Conrad Verner, etc.) I hate that...but it really makes me appreciate all the choices I made in ME1, when I can compare that to an actual import.

I am of the opinion that much of the differing opinions here on BSN stem from the fact that many bagan their ME experience with ME2 and formed their opinions without any historical perspective.
Kind of like getting into an argument with only part of the information or half of the facts.
Imagine the discussions that will occur with those who play ME3 first.
Speaking for myself I prefer a complete experience so I'd say play it in order.

I came into the franchise with Mass Effect 2. I originally played the first one, but I was younger and didn't really understand RPGs too much and wanted more Halo style shooting. Now that I'm older, I feel like I might have a different taste for the game, but I just am not sure about class and love interest and everything. I really like the Shepard I cultivated in ME2. A rough and tough soldier with a heart of gold. I'm afraid starting over from ME1 might diminish that, but I really want to take full advantage of ME3's gameplay and story. Also, I played as a soldier and really liked it, but I'm not big on using the same class once for a similar game. I was thinking about making my canon Shep an Infitrator with a bondesque personality. I'm pretty much just coming here for advice. What do you guys feel I should do?

You could just get the Genesis DLC.

Heretic!

Absolutely, 100%, no doubt whatsoever - YES.

It holds up very well graphically and doesn't play like an older game (which it isn't, really).  I know most think the combat is better in ME2, and it probably is, but the combat is fine in ME1 - I enjoy it.  If you don't care for it, just play on Casual and breeze through the fights.

It is an amazing, wonderful story filled with memorable characters and beautiful moments.  And I guarantee that when you finish and import your character into ME2, you will see ME2 in a whole new light.

One of the very best games of the decade.

I thouroughly agree with this position, you will not see ME2 as it was meant to be seen without seeing ME1.  Sorry PS3 owners.

Why would he? I've already explained he should get the first Two Worlds instead, 2007 RPG of the year.

if the devs followed through with their original selling point (a trilogy heavily influenced by decision and narrative) then this question would not be posed at all....upon playing ME1 a newcomer to the serue would simply say "Damn I need to play the first game in order to understand the second one completely"

goddamn newocmers -mumbles and grumbles-

....8 pages of replies? Really? And I borrowed it from a friend, who literally just handed it to me haha. I'll probably buy it for myself later, but I figure this way no real loss.
