The whole trilogy is epic. This whole battle is even more epic. But there's a scene available only on the EE DVD's that should never be left out of the main theatrical version!

The Houses of Healing - LotR/RotK EE - Arwen's Singing Image IPB

This scene is where my heart starts calming down again, thanks to the song. From the moment the Rohirim appears on the hill or even before, up to this, it's all tears out and heart pounding, no matter how many hundred times I've already watched the movies. I own all the EE DVD's since their release.

Thank you, PJ, for making the movies but you should never have left this out of the theatrical version! =P

I actually prefer a particular battle from the sixth season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine over this, but this would definitely be in the running for second place.

Excellent stuff, my friend. Here's to the Battle of Five Armies in the upcoming Hobbit movie being even better than that - I doubt we'll be disappointed.

Or how about this:

Say what you want, but there is no gun battle in any other movie that can possibly compare to this (you might wanna turn your speakers down a bit - the gun shots are very loud!).

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields is my favorite battle of all time, I agree.
I didn't like how PJ decided to end it, though...the Army of the Dead swoops in and kills everyone, a la Deus Ex Machina. It felt kind of rushed for me, and also...the Dead made the sacrifice of the Rohirrim and Gondorian soldiers kind of pointless, they should have arrived...earlier!!
But the battle before that was amazing, asbolutely amazing. I just love this trilogy, and I own the EE dvd and BD. Cannot wait for The Hobbit...

Actually, I think the GTA series was heavily inspired by the movie in general - the bank heist in Vice City was directly inspired by the bank robbery you just watched, in fact.

Anyway, here is one of the best sword fights I've ever seen.

2nd chapter of Witcher 2 . The cursed Battleground.

But as greengoron89 said Noone can go near Heat :) and there is a mission in GTA4 just like the Heist in Heat movie.

Ah hell, I've got quite a few "best battle scenes" lined up. I'll just post the rest of them in one go. Enjoy!

Final shootout from The Wild Bunch

Gang fight from A Clockwork Orange

Darth Maul vs. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan

Opening scene from Onimusha 3

Raiden vs. Vamp from Metal Gear Solid 4

And even though it's not a "battle scene" per se, I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most awesome things I've ever seen:

Death of the Archdemon

The Bride versus the Crazy 88 in Kill Bill. Elegant, gory, and goofy all at once. It took itself seriously while being unafraid to poke fun at movie conventions.

I'm not crazy about army battles. Most of them feel understandably impersonal, and are a pain to follow if I want to focus on specific characters.

There are so many flaws in the shooting, acting, fight coreography, etc., in that fight, that is really laughable. And I laugh when I watch it ever since 1988 when it was released!

That was Epic...no question. For me, though, it kind of threw the Film off-pace. I liked 1 & 2, but I would've LOVED all of the important stuff in a single film.

The big shoot-out in Heat impressed me a lot. You looked at De Niro, Kilmer, and the rest of the Gang and they just looked and acted like top of their Game Pro-Criminals in a firefight.

Since I thought we were talking battle scenes here, I didn't give their impact on the entire narrative much thought.

Totally understand...in fact, that's why I mentioned Heat...bad movie but a great scene!

The Crazy 88 scene was Epic in every aspect...from choreography to cinematography to art design.

If you can get past Van damme's overacting and posturing its actually a very good martial arts movie. Btw the film choreography was done by Frank Dux...the guy Van damme is playing in the movie. You have a cast list of real martial artists , they cant act for **** but they know their craft. The bad guy in that clip is Bolo Yeung, a kung fu master who was friends with Bruce Lee.

I hope you're kidding. That is one of the worst fight scenes I've ever seen.Image IPB

Oh and yeah Siege of Gondor, Pellennor Fields, Black Gate or Helms Deep ftw! Although as someone else mentioned the army of the dead was a massive cop out just used to quickly finish the battle, it isn't like that in the book, but nevermind, great films.

I find Kung Fu movies more epic, especially Jet Li ones.
