Whaaat.  Such a prissy duel.  The guy just stands there and lets him slice his neck open.

This is more like it.

Are you referring to just that one part, or to the entire duel? The duel itself is highly technical and realistic - that's why it's so renowned.

We Were Soldiers - one of the best choreogrphed battleground films I have seen.

The Quiet Man - fist fight towards end of the film is still fun to watch.

Braveheart - love the old man that keeps getting hurt.

The Princess Bride - Dread Pirate vs Montoya.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - scimitar vs pistol.

Finally, someone else who appreciates the first Punisher movie.

Well, technically it's the second Punisher movie, after the lame late 80's adaptation with Dolph Lundgren.

But yes, it's an excellent movie that is criminally underrated IMHO. I'd put it up against the best of the many Marvel adaptations out there.

Anyway, here is one of the best sword fights I've ever seen.

Easily one of the best fight scenes, period. There's a number of reasons it's so good, aside from the fact both actors look like expert swordsman.

-No music until the cimax.

-The sporadic bursts of action are offset by some wonderfully tense shots of each actor's face. Neeson's look of fear after Roths' first attack says it all: "I am way out of my league.."

-It's a classic example of modern technology usurping the archaic. Roth's weapon and technique were far superior. It was only guts and heart that won the fight.

Whaaat.  Such a prissy duel.  The guy just stands there and lets him slice his neck open.

I don't suppose one should take that Viking battle seriously, but hollywood has yet to represent the Norsemen faithfully. And Tim Roth's character was a priss, a priss who could gut you in a flash. Thats what made his character great.

Has Tim Roth ever played a a character that doesn't make you want to vomit when you watch him? I'm not dissing him, quite the contrary he plays a great villain,he just makes it really hard to watch sometimes. I thought Vatel was his best performance, apparently I was wrong.

Very sad but true.  The 13th Warrior is about as good as it gets.

But also stand inexplicably still while a defeated opponent grabs his sword and gets to his feet then kills him?  Liam should've tweaked his nose first and then it would be a great scene.

He definitely plays a complete and utter scumbag in Rob Roy - his most villainous role yet, no doubt. Just the look on his face before the duel begins makes you hate his guts - so smug and insulting.

I'd put the character in the top ten greatest (or worst?) villains of all-time, easily.

I think he was a bit in awe of what Liam was doing in the first place - it's not very often that an opponent just up and grabs the blade of your sword during a fencing duel. It would seem like a rather stupid thing to do at a glance, and this is probably why Tim Roth's character wasn't as responsive as he should've been until it was too late.

Realistically, he could have pulled straight back and stabbed Neeson right in the eye. But it's the only point in the fight that asks the viewer to suspend their belief so it didn't bother me.

I would've posted a scene from Gladiator, the first group battle with the chariots. I couldn't find a quality clip of it on youtube.

The problem with making a fight too one-sided for the guy who is going to lose is that the resolution is often hard to believe. It´s either a fluke or a what an idiot moment for the loser. Or the moment the hero gets a second wind and wipes the floor with the other despite being already beaten to pulp. Can work when some kind of magic is involved, but when it´s only adrenalin I usually don´t buy it.

I can see that- it's well acted, there's no doubt about that- but like someone said, it amounts to an idiot moment.  Hence why I'd still put the 13th Warrior duel above it, which is very similar but more convincing in that the overconfident one didn't have any time at all to react before his head was off.  But I could just be biased because I like Vikings a lot more than Renaissance prats.  Also I've only seen pieces of Rob Roy.

I was under the impression that rapiers aren't very sharp around the edges - and Neeson was also tightly gripping the blade and bending it upward, which would've made it a little more difficult to pull the sword away in time.

I'm a bit surprised no one has posted this one yet - it's probably one of the most memorable battles in movie history:

Holy cow... I'm utterly speechless. That's easily the most godlike martial arts battle I've ever witnessed, putting some of Bruce Lee's greatest to complete shame (and I don't say that lightly).

Looks like I've got a new movie to put on queue.
