I'm in Act 3, have so far refused to go to Sundermount, done Merrill's questioning beliefs where she throws me out of her house, then went back to my estate and Merrill is there to apologise but its obvious she thinks we're an item and my only options are to play along with it or break her heart.

I swear my Hawke only flirted with her the once, way back in Act 1 or the very beginning of Act 2, since when he's come out as gay and cemented his relationship with Fenris and we've already been reconciled after our 3 year break.  So now he (I) feel sort of trapped because he doesn't want to upset Merrill but there's no way he can let her down gently.  I'm assuming that we're in a bugged relationship, so I was wondering, do you think there's any chance he could get away with it with Merrill and still stay in the relationship with Fenris, considering we're just before Last Straw?

(I suppose I could just carry on and see what happens - may be I'll just be incredibly lucky)

Sleeping with Merrill will stop your Fenris romance, I'm pretty sure.  Certainly letting her move in would.  Best to turn her down.

Since I was so near the end, I decided to go with it, slept with Merrill, invited her to move in and waited to see what happened and guess what, I was that lucky!! For once a bug worked in my favour. Got to the the Gallows and still got the devoted farewell from Fenris whilst Merrill seems to think we're just friends again but is all dressed up in that nice white outfit, which looks so much better than her other one. Then my jokey Hawke got to suggest to Sebastian that Andraste would be "Waving her torch and crying freedom with the rest of them" and whilst he thought she would be more dignified than that he had to admit she always championed the oppressed, which is my sentiments entirely. This is my best play through ever. Wonder what Varric will say at the end?

And Cassandra will say "Bull****, bugs can't change things like this!" and then Varric's like "Actually, yes, yes they can."

But really, you'll get "All of us except for Fenris" and "All of us except for Merrill" said at the same time.

Curioser and curioser, this strange bug. Fenris was the only one to kiss me in the gallows but Merrill is the only one Varric mentions at the end. It is a pity that I've already done MoA with this guy as it would have been interesting to see which one was acknowledge as the romance in that.
Still for once the problem has occurred right at the end of the game, so it is easy enough to go back and fix, if I want a different romance to be recognised if it carries over into DA3 or some other DLC.

The moral of this tale is never to flirt with anyone unless you really mean it, plus don't give girls gifts they can take the wrong way. I'd given her that ring (which I'd got when making a trip to Sundermount without telling Merrill) and it clearly was the necessary push on the rival scale to trigger the romance scene. Never gave it a thought - just being kind.
Same thing happened with Morrigan. I'd already chosen Zevran over her but thought it would be a nice gesture to give her the mirror, made some gallant comments and suddenly she thinks we're back on again. I shall have to be more careful in future.
Still this probably means I shall have to play through again, just to experience the Merrill romance in its entirety when it is intentional.

I expreinced that Merrill as well in my one Fenris playthrough. Merrill is apperently into Hawkes who are into Fenris.

The gift had nothing to do with it...it was you clicking those heart icons.

I have given gifts to Merrill, she never wanted to get into my Fiona's robes, only Emma and Sandra because they, you know. Flirted with Merrill.

At the same time?  What a player that Merrill is.

Does Fiona even wear robes?

Not when she's having sex.

I was only joking about the gift - I given the gift plenty of times before, including a girl who was in a relationship with Fenris but had earlier flirted with Merrill but no awkward scene with her - but she was more mid range on the scale so presuamably did not trigger the requisite flag. It was very late in the day for Merrill to suddenly start to respond to an advance made six years previously which is why it took me completely by surprise, though I suppose I should have had suspicions when given the heart option on the previous dialogue with her - which I ignored in favour of a diplomatic one. I thought one was normally required to follow a series of heart icons before people turn up at your mansion with the clear intention of advancing a romance.

I have just assumed it was a bug because I thought that once you have confirmed your relationship with someone, it does shut off the possibility of you two timing with someone else. Bear in mind this was not during the 3 year break after Fenris walked out but after our reconciliation, when I had forgiven him and we had reaffirmed our devotion to one another. I had flirted with Merrill once, very early on before Fenris and I had slept together and I had not flirted with anyone between glowy kiss moment and reconciliation (well apart from Tallis and Zevran but they don't count), the reason being that the Fenris romance does seem very buggy and even if you sleep with someone and break it off, Fenris will still act like you are in a relationship with them, even though this is not meant to happen.

Now Esper says that she experienced the same Merrill "bug", so may be it isn't a bug, may be it's intentional because the writers can't bear to see poor Fenris happy or want to suggest that Fenris would now be happy with a sort of FwB relationship with him at the same time as a romance with Merrill. Could it be the fact that it was a guy and not a girl? Perhaps a dev could clarify on this one

I don't I played a girl. I had this trigger in act two. It resultet in me never doing a rival Merrill again, I have never had the problem on friendship.

Merrril's romance is one of the sweetest ones in the game.

Merrill was very sweet and vulnerable when she turned up at my house - that's why if felt totally cornered and why selecting the broken heart icon made me feel a real bastard since the words were something to the effect that she could play with demons and blood magic to her hearts content so long as she didn't endanger Kirkwall - which is not how I felt at all, I did care about her personally, just not in the way she imagined. Why couldn't I be just her totally caring gay friend? Sometimes the speech that comes out really sucks. (And I really did love that white outfit - I'm going to have to make a nice male Hawke mage who really understands her).

What annoyed me is I slept with Isabella but I pursued my relationship with Merrill since I jumped on the boat with the **** (Is) and was like man Merrill is for the long haul. At the end game it said that everyone left my side of Isabella -.- great. The love of my life Merrill runs off and the **** stays with me....just great.
