Long story short haven't played DA since DA2 came out but I lost all my old DA saves in a crash so am doing a run through of DA + most DLC prior to returning to DA2 just to see what effect the DA (background) save will have on DA2 play. So far I have completed Leli song, Shale, Wardens Keep, Return to Ostagar, Dalish & Redcliff (but not Ashes).
Finished most of the Orzammar stuff just defeated Jarvis am about to talk to Harrowmont -
Playing on PC my character is male noble S&S warrior and I brought Leliana (romance), Morrigan, and Shale along and forgot completely about Ohgren being there.
My question is given these characters who is going to be my best option to take along.
I'm thinking I need Leli for locks and traps and I know both Shale and Ohgren have stuff going on in the deep roads but I'm concerned about going in with no mage.
I usually play on hard unless a particular battle gets too annoying then I'll drop down to normal to move on and then crank it back up to hard later. I could live with doing the whole Deep Road on normal if necessary I am mostly interested in character development at this point.
Suggestions?

First of all, I need to know what you plan to do with the Anvil of the Void - if you want to side with Branka and preserve it, DO NOT take Shale with you. If you do, she'll turn against during you the battle with Caridin, and you'll be forced to slay her.
Otherwise, don't bother with bringing a mage - as long as you have a large supply of health poultices and set everyone's tactics to use one when their health gets low, you should be fine.

Hmmm...I don't really have too many potions for some reason there seems to be none available for sale in Orz (those pesky developers having their fun with me again I suspect) and Morrigan is my only option for making them. I suppose I could have her make up whatever we have supplies for before setting her free.
I've only been in the deep roads a couple times before and it was ages ago so I don't recall if I ever sided with Branka but IIRC she was a psycho so I'd guess probably not.

Seconding that the Deep Roads is plenty do-able without a mage. I just ran a four warrior party (S+S female Cousland/dual wield Alistair/yer basic Oghren/Dog) for most of the Deep Roads on Nightmare, with only one or two genuinely bumpy spots. (Someone with a good ranged attack can be handy for the Broodmother and the bridge into the Dead Trenches, but I managed fine without.)
I used tonnes of potions. Oghren died a lot, but I've never gotten a handle on his tactics.
And it was easy enough to run back through with Leliana to clean out the chests, though that isn't an issue for you.

Well I'm giving it a shot without Morrigan - made up all the heal potions we had supplies for which only gives us about 20 regular heals and 60 or so lesser heals with a couple each of the higher ones. Just getting started - so far so good -

Wait, you can buy infinite Elfroots from the Dalish camp - plus flasks and distillation agents from Bodahn. Go and stock up on ingredients if you aren't sure of yourself, and have Morrigan make the poultices before heading down.
BTW, I just solo'd the entire game on Nightmare with a DN rogue, so don't let the lack of a mage daunt you too much - the whole game can be beaten without one, I assure you.

Yeah I'm not too big on breaking off an area/quest set and humping back halfway across Ferelden to some other area just to restock our backpacks - sort of breaks the immersion for me - which is of course one of the reasons I find it somewhat annoying when the devs appear to intentionally leave some pretty important stuff (like health potions and/or the ingredients to make them) out of a given area.
It kind of makes me feel like:
a) they want to challenge me to go on without them and see what happens... (which is usually what happens often followed by a series of reloads and/or dropping the difficulty for the toughest battles)
or
that after all if I want to just wimp out they left a crapload of them for me someplace else...which usually doesn't happen - but sometimes I remember to stock up more before traveling out of Walmart range the next time...
In any event only one reload and no difficulty drops so far and the three warriors plus Leli are doing pretty well so far but it's time for NCIS...

I hear you. I figure, if I don't got it when I'm ready to go in there, then I have to find a way to work without it.

One of my easiest times through the Deep Roads was with my Dalish archer and 3 warriors. It's totally doable. My main reason for bringing Morrigan is because she's a Cold specialist (and usually wielding the Winter's Breath staff by the time I get there) and the Broodmother is especially sensitive to cold. But ice arrows and freeze bombs work too. . .
Happy NCISing.

It makes sense to not have elfroot or potions made from it for sale in Orzammar, since it doesn't grow underground. Any elfroot would have to be imported from the surface, and at the time when the quest takes place Orzammar is closed off completely.
Also, I find that the hardest fights in the Deep Roads take place near the end.

I ran 3 mages and Shale... Though I regretfully swapped him for Ogrhen when it came time to deal with Branka. Wynne, PC mage, and Morrigan almost the whole game through. Alistair was my tank until I took the chance to snag Shale. As for chests and locks, the game is winnable without them. I found no issues in any fights. My only challenge came with rescuing Queen Anora. My walking statue wasn't allowed to come. Zevran was no tank.
