Has anyone else had this problem?  After working through a few other issues I finally got the game to load and went to create a female character.  As soon as I clicked next after choosing to be a female Dalish elf rogue, the game crashed to the desktop and I got the usual Windows statement that the program stopped working.  

This does not happen when I create a male character.  Every single permutation of the options for a male character works.  Not a single one does when I create a female character.

Have you tested with a male character beyond the creation point?  Perhaps your system is already teetering on the edge of a CTD, and just a few more pixels of load to reshape the thorax somewhat is the thing(s) that tips it over the edge:

Preliminary diagnostic information

PCs are not *anything* at all like game console systems.  There is almost nothing that is truly "standard" between various branded PCs, making the game developers' jobs very difficult, and resulting in warning labels attached to game boxes for those games that have serious requirements. 

In case you have misunderstood how to evaluate your PC compared to that game box label, we have to start from here.  Fill it all in.

Same problem, still without any possibility to solve it. Bioware is aware of that, but, in the last message their staff posted, they thought it was a Celeron problem. And I don't have a Celeron, neither does some other people with the same problem.

I've just finished the game as a male and can create a new male character, so I can't quite see that it's a spec problem.

I am researching this subject area, just getting started, and so far, the only two people who have actually filled out a real, complete problem report have had very Low Quality hardware.  No one who contributed here in this thread ever completed any report, so this thread is too incomplete to include in my current study. 

I can, however, edit this in: two factors did emerge, although the percentage of complaints from persons who whould not provide hardware information was extremely high.  Anyone shutting off sound for performance reasons, may have needed to enable sound in order to create female Player Characters. 

Second, anyone who ignored the game's minimum video requirement and couldn't create a female character, could do so as soon as they upgraded to a Mainline Gaming card.
