I was originally going to ask "Do you like RPGs?" but on a Bioware website, that's like asking whether you like breathing or not.

But to answer the question myself, honestly, I don't like RPGs too much. Granted, I have a few that I do like, but overall, I don't. I don't really view Mass Effect as an RPG series, more like an action-adventure series. But that could be said for any RPG....

Well, what do you think?

The gathering of epic loot, my character slowly getting more powerful, and a great story are the reasons I like RPGs.

All I really care about is a good story and memorable characters. I can take or leave most other "RPG elements".

I write so I like good stories and characters. I like exploring. They're usually long and take more time to complete. Time is changing some of these things, but they're still my favorite genre.

I like lengthy games where I feel like I'm on some grand, epic adventure, where I interact with the game world through my character who I've built from scratch. My rpg character is like my personal Navi, like in the movie Avatar.

I enjoy having a choice and seeing the characters develop in an RPG.

Hmm, I can see this quickly devolving into the "What is an RPG" debate. Best be careful.

I like themes and while I don't think they're exclusive to RPGs, there seems to be more time aportioned to story in RPGs and every once in a while I stumble across a thematic narrative and really enjoy myself.

The only games I truly feel connected to are ones where I have some control over who the protaganist is. It needs to feel like my story. The more control I get over who my protaganist is, the more tied I feel. Having a character I create interact and form relationships with the game world I'm playing in is my favorite thing to do in gaming.

I give it till page 2.

But yeah I'ld say I play them,  but it differs, Like FF7 I loved the story, characters, and what was imo the last good mechanics in a FF game.  DA:2 on the other hand I like for the action, and characters, the story in it is a bit lack luster.

Oblvion I play for the lore and customization, but its story and mechanics are boring. Its like why I play shooters

Same with alot of other games, it should be noted as of late the bulk of my RPGs are shooter Rpgs and Action Adventure RPG's. But why  I like each game I keep rarely matches up.

for me it is a deeper understanding of the character, what motivates them and how experiences they had in-game shaped them. Thats why they are RPG's. The role of that character is basically the experience that creates who that character is. And it is why I get so bothered by things like spec changes. When you change a spec you essentially rip out the guts of the character.

I suppose some people see a role as DPS/TANK/HEALER. I see the role as the accumulation of experiences that create the character. And that is why I play RPG's

I like making characters. A lot. I can spend hours with Freedom Force, City of Heroes, or any other game where you can out of the game make your characters ahead of time. I even had some fun with DA:O's character creator, though the options are pretty limited in that one.

I like progressing my character's abilities through a game. Leveling up, if you will. More so if I have lots of choices.

I like lengthy games.

I like quests and adventures. Not so much objectives and missions.

I prefer parties of characters, if I can create them all then all the better... but I'll accept a party of pre-made characters if I have a few to choose from. I like an adventuring party that have different abilities that have to work together to overcome obstacles and challenges.

I like tactical combat. Not shooting things and hiding behind walls. I prefer tactics and especially strategy as opposed to manual dexterity and button-pressing-speed.

I need a story in my game. The less story a game has the harder it is for me to care about playing it.

Choices are nice in said story. Dialog choices, direction of story choices. The more of those, the better.

---

I like RPGs because they are the games that tend to give me more of the above elements than any other game genre.

They're fun.

...

What? You want a better explanation? Fiiine. A good RPG combines lovely music, interesting characters, and engaging combat with a decent story to bring it all together. A great RPG excels all that while offering staggering replay value. That can come from trying different classes or abilities, bringing other characters along, or taking the path rarely chosen.

...

But seriously, they're fun.

I enjoy creating characters and further defining them through their interactions in the game world and with other characters or by how I level up their abilities. I especially like it when these other characters are developed and have interesting stories of their own and aren't just mere tagalongs for the PC.

Basically this. Plus RPG do often have a very nice lore to be told.

Oh, I should add my qualifications can apply to games outside the RPG genre. Perhaps a better answer is I like good games. Period. Call it an RPG, action RPG, JRPG, CRPG, strategy RPG, dating sim RPG. Whatever. That's all irrelevant. While I do miss a certain old school design design, I don't let that prevent me from trying new games.

You're not prying my controller/keyboard out of my hands without snapping my fingers off in the process. :P

Overall:

Character customization/progression, epic loot, exploration, grinding monsters, NPC interaction, questing, storytelling, and more looting.

I enjoy the BioWare style of RPGs the most due to the character interaction via the conversation system, but RPGs tend to be lengthier games with solid stories. I don't always love the gameplay in RPGs in comparison to other genres but I generally find the narrative can trump my gripes in that regard.
