Today's standards? Today's standards where?Compared to today standards, Ashley is open minded and a humanist.
USA, Europe - or to be fair: the entire western world. Our standards were far better in 2000 then in 2011. And yes, it's all about that stupid sh*t called "skin", "religion" and "place of birth". Time for some great humanists ...
That's not a joke but sad truth. But now I'm out here. I feel I could offend ppl if starting another stupid political debatte - it doesn't fit here and should stay out of here.
Back to Spectres.

I think they were assigned to the Normadny to keep Shepard's seat warm... I doubt that he was meant to stay imprisoned if the trial went pear-shaped. Anderson, Hackett and the SR1+SR2 crews know the Reapers are coming, and Shepard's about the only one doing a damn thing to stop them, so I reckon Hackett would have ordered the VS to break them out of prison.
OK Wtf? Shepard is sent to prison before the trial?

Kaidan would be better at uniting a team to work together and would be more versatile in combat. He can disable foes either singly or in groups, decrypt electronic data-locks, use his skill in medicine to patch up members of his squad, etc. If anything, his wide range of skills would almost demand the ability to do far more things at once than is humanly possible.
Ashley is as tough as nails and packs some serious firepower. Furthermore, I think she'd be able to quickly make tough decisions that might result in serious loss of life if that would be necessary to achieve a wider objective for the good of the galaxy. I think Kaidan would be able to make such a choice, but I believe he'd look for alternatives first. Given that alternatives aren't always going to be available, the time lost while searching for them could end up being vital.
So, ultimately: Kaidan for co-ordination and versatility, Ashley for decisive finishing power.

I didn't say she was very speciesist, only mildly speciesist. Moreso than Kaidan, at any rate.your point? Disliking something doesn't mean you look down on it, it jsut doesn't effect you positively. Someone's dislike of something doesn't take away from it, it just means they aren't inclined to agree with it. She's not gonna be spouting how much she loves aliens but she's not a zealot like the Terra firma party who protest on an alien station (Repaer station actually) or Cerberus who use violent methods when retrieving someone from the migrant fleet. She's well within her rights to not like Aliens it's not a presrequisite for living last time I checked. She still works well with the STG on Virmire, works well with Wrex, Garrus, Tali, and Liara in combat during ME1. you're making a mountain of a mole hill with that quote.
Note that Saren earned his reputation before humans came around, IIRC.Also Xil, Saren was the farthest thing from being a fan of humans and yet he was the council's favorite despite actively sabotaging humanities first attempt to get a Spectre candidate they gave him every benefit of the doubt until shepard gave the most damning evidence they could find.

Not tomention Saren wasn''t racist of any council species which was a big plus in his favor. Ash on the other hand has already given some...remarks about Asari. One of the most powerful Council Powers.
So yeah. Big difference there.

@Ryzaki: you mean about their armor? that's hardly a defaming remark seeing as you defeat some asari commandoes in battle on Noveria possibly with her on the squad.

Something tells me they will be equally good at being Spectres. They've had a couple of years to train, and make up for their respective shortcomings. Kaidan probably took a level of Badass, and Ashley probably took a level of Diplomat.

I'm sure they'll be equally good. But we also have to keep in mind that Spectres do a variety of tasks. As the codex says, some are diplomats, some are assassins. Ash may very well be a bad**** warrior Spectre while Kaidan's the more thoughtful, diplomatic type. There may be sneaky hacker-type salarian Spectres. Powerful asari biotics, and so on.
Spectres don't fit into a particular mold. They're simply people who "get the job done" Different people for different jobs. Ash and Kaidan are different people with different specialties. If Bioware knows what they're doing, they'll stop trying to make them into the same person

Isn't the Eden Prime where we get to meet Ash and Shepard is sent to secure the prothean becon
Yeah, but it's Akuze that drew teh Council's attention to (Sole Survivor) Shepard. Where he/she survived their entire unit being wiped out.
Ash's entire unit was wiped out by a geth attack on Eden Prime. The fact that she survived when everyone else died may in fact be what draws the COuncil's attention to her as well. That and being one of the heroes who helped track down Saren, of course

That said, the Council seems to prefer "Ruthless" types when choosing their Spectres.

Ashley Williams is a Marine that from the start was recognized for her leadership abilities. DI Gunnery Chief Ellison promoted her to squad leader based off his observations. Shepard also notes her strong record and doesn't understand why she has been assigned only crap jobs. She was also the sole survivor on Eden Prime against the Geth and was quick to get back into the fight.
Kaidan Alenko is part of the Navy and had Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training ... He became a Lieutenant through his hard work and has several special commendations in his file. Dr. Chakwas notes his high performance as well.
Add to their resumes that they were both part of the team that successfully took down both Saren and Sovereign and they have a better record to be promoted than Shepard did at the start of ME1. Shepard was promoted in a moment of politics (thank you Tali!) ... Yes, Shepard was being considered, like Anderson had been, but had Nihlus lived (thank you Saren) ... well who knows how it would have turned out.
As to who would be better? The one that survived Virmire of course.
But that is just my two cents ... can't wait to see what the two were up to while away from Shepard.
