I have something I'd like to have cleared up about Goldanna's mother. Who was she? Goldanna is very certain that her mother had a child (a baby bump is hard to miss). She's also sure that it was Maric's (this is debatable but she claims it with passion and even Alistair believes it's him). If Alistair is not her son, who is? Was her mother pregnant with some other lord's (Eamon? Tegan?) child? I think there's a missing link here.

Goldanna's mother was a servant at the royal castle, I believe.

Alistair does look an awful lot like Maric...if that means anything.

Redcliffe Castle, not the royal castle.

Alistair sez (scans notes...):

"My mother was a serving girl in Redcliffe Castle who died when I was very young."
and
"The thing is, I have a sister. A half-sister. I told you about my mother, right? She was a servant at Redcliffe Castle, and she had a daughter... only I never knew about her."
and
"Look, our mother... she worked as a servant in Redcliffe Castle a long time ago, before she died. Do you know about that?"

So according to the quoted dialogue, Alistair and Goldanna had the same mother but the father part is not stated unequivocally -- Alistair apparently by Maric, but Goldanna by person unknown.

Then what about Fiona? She had a baby with Maric who is believed to be Alistair. Did Goldanna's mother also had a fling with the king? If so, then there is a third child out there whether it is Alistair or not.

We only know what Alistair tells us. But Alistair only knows what he's been told, and we've no way of knowing if he was told the truth, a half-truth or a lie.

We also know what Goldana tells us. She knew her mother was pregnant and apparently also with who - she tried to blackmail the Arl, so they gave her money to keep her quiet and sent her alone to Denerim.

The question remains though, is the babe Goldanna's mother had Maric's? Duncan and the others may have started the rumor that Alistair was that baby to keep Fiona's involvement a secret, but the maid did give birth to a child as well, no?

Unless she and the child died during birth and they used that convenience to say that it was Alistair--and then dumped that stillborn child into a well somewhere...

True enough, but unless Goldanna is a geneticist, she only knows that her mother was pregnant, and who she was TOLD was the father.

if the woman wasn't a w*hore, and this was just one time sex, I don't see why she wouldn't be able to know who is her mother's lover - even without her mother explicitly saying so.

If the child died and Duncan and Eamon started the rumour, or if she really was Alistair's mother is entirely up to you.

Can anyone provide a cite for "Duncan started the rumour"? This thread is the first I've encountered that speculation/claim.

Thanks.

I believe there is no cite. I just reacted to Odin's remark. But as a speculation, it is just as good as any other.

What I meant is, that whether Alistair is son of Fiona or of Goldanna's mother is up to everyone's decision.

I say Duncan because he accompanied Fiona to see Maric and tell him she had his baby and that it needed to be raised without the political struggles Cailan would.

A quote of Fiona's to Maric from The Calling: "Tell him nothing. Let him think his mother human, and dead."

It seems a bit convoluted, though.

A simpler explanation is that they hid him because he was an illegitimate child, and public knowledge of the king's philandering might be embarassing.

That or Maric really did knock up a servant or two.

The books alone show he wasn't faithful to his wife. Alistair could have other siblings. :P

Oh, I wasn't aware Alistair's parentage was still up in the air like that. Interesting.

Although I'm with Shadow - it's more likely that there's another heir or two floating about. Might make for some juicy drama in a later installment of DA.

Right. Whether it's from Maric or not, Goldanna seems to have a sibling somewhere that's unaccounted for.
