The game had been working perfectly for months and then one day this started to
happen:

The background also flickers during gameplay....

I've been searching forums and noticed a few people dealing with the same issue, but
not on a Mac.  I've tried EA customer support to no avail and will be
dropping my CPU off at a Mac store for a stress test.  I've tried altering
video settings and even reinstalled the game twice.  Nothing seems to
work.

Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you kindly.

This can be a sign of dying hardware, most likely the video card, yes. Good call on having it checked at the store!

If you haven't done so yet, you should install smcFanControl, this allows you to increase fan speed manually and keeps your Mac cooler - DAO is quite taxing on any system and can cause overheating, especially on a laptop.

Mind you, this could also be a faulty graphics driver... did you update or change your system recently? What version of Mac OS X are you running, and what video card do you have?

In any case, we gotta wait for an answer from the Mac store!

Hey Stone, thanks for your response!

My Mac stats:
Lion 10.7.2
2.7 Intel i7
Intel HD Graphics 3000

I did notice that the issues started up right after a software update, but at this point I'm really starting to agree with your first inclination and that the problem is hardware related.

Going to be dropping it off today though and will hopefully have some answers by tomorrow.

Definitely appreciate your time and insights!

Wanted to let anyone know that may have perused this topic that the Apple store was unable to find any hardware issues with my computer. They seem to be convinced that it is strictly software related and specific to this game only. Still waiting on feedback from an EA customer support pro....

There's been another topic about graphical distortions in the meantime, and the screenshot actionhero112 posted does look like its the same issue. Still waiting for him to get back with info about his OS version and video card, but I'm inclined to believe that Intel graphics drivers are bugged in 10.7.2.

Edit: Confirmed, actionhero112 is on 10.7.2 & Intel HD Graphics 3000 as well.

EA customer support should forward this issue to Transgaming and Apple.

Hey i'm having the exact same problem and I'm noticing recently other people have been posting similar topics on this issue. Game was working fine until I updated some software on my mac, I have a mac mini (brand new nothing wrong) with a completely new graphics card and everything, its able to handle the game. My guess would be that the reason our game isn't working is because it has something to do with the cider emulation of the game.

I've read some other bug reports about Intel HD Graphics 3000 and 10.7.2, and while most where about Cider games (DAO, DA2, The Sims 3, Assassin's Creed), there was a complaint about Minecraft as well, which is unrelated to Cider.

There have been extensive graphics driver updates in 10.7.2, so my guess is that those are the cause.

For the moment, all you can do is either downgrade your system to 10.7.0 /10.7.1, or stomach the bugs and wait for the next OS X or DAO update (both could take months sadly).
