So I had started DA 2 a few months go - for some reason was playing a warrior (I almost always play rogues in Bioware games so I'm my own lockpicker), and stopped after Act 1 was over to swap to rogue - but didn't feel like playing Act 1 straight away again - so just yesterday completed my 1st DA2 playthrough.
I had downloaded Legacy after Act 1 was over on that warrior character (who's still sitting in Act 2), and I also downloaded MotA while my rogue was in Act 2. I haven't played either because I got the idea that your sibling (Bethany in my cases) would be pretty involved, and she was away at the time. I kept waiting for her to come back, but, well, you know how that goes.
Would it be "better" to play these DLCs in Act 1 with your sibling, or just as well to wait until post-game?
I'm going to start a new character soon - but how useful/challenging are these DLC's if you play them in Act 1, in terms getting items and such? I'd read that at least one (MotA) actually takes place before the end events of DA2, so if I want to take my sibling - is the best time to do them right before Act 1 ends?
Legacy and MotA question - when to play?

What did you do with Beth, Circle or Wardens?
And did you import a save with a living Nathaniel Howe, or did you get the dwarf quest into the Deep Roads in Act II instead?

You can play the DLC with the sinling at any point. A Circle/Warden Bethany gets permission to come and Templar/Warden gets the same.

Wardens.
I had thought I had a living Howe, but I guess not - as I never saw him.
As for sibling getting permission to come - I never knew that. That would have alleviated some of my frustration at losing Bethany (my healer, at least at the start) for most of the game.

Well, you just got the same experience the rest of us did. Prior to the DLC we were all pretty frustrated by that too XD
Anyway, as Lord Aesir says, the sib will come with you at any point, and their dialog and quests and the interaction you have with them varies a fair amount based on their fate.
Nate's a bit bugged, in that the game by default assumes that anyone at the Vigil died if you saved Amaranthine (since it doesn't import approval values). However, if Nate was with you or you saved the Keep instead of the city, he should definitely be fine; his quest is also relatively easy to miss (you have to notice his sister hanging out in front of the Chantry in Act III and talk to her).
Ultimately, the reason Nate matters is because you can run into your Warden sibling on his quest. If you do, the conversation there works better if it happens prior to Legacy, IMO, so in that case I'd do Legacy in Act III, after finishing Finding Nathaniel.
But if you don't have a living Nate, or if you sent Beth to the Circle, I'd do Legacy in Act II. First thing if you're a powergamer - the beginning of Act II is sort of a dead space for good itemization - or after All That Remains if you want an extra bit of poignancy.
Mark of the Assassin makes very little sense if you play it in Act III so I'd always go Act II with that one. After Legacy if you do Legacy in Act II, but otherwise whenever you like.
Though with Legacy, you may find it worth your time to play once per act on different saves. There's less variance in MotA so I'd only try that in different acts if I were a really seriously completionist roleplayer (which, I mean, I personally am, but I don't recommend it to sane people).

Not sure about wardens, but bethany cannot join you in MotA if she is in the circle. She can join you in Legacy however.

I am going to go rogue and suggest you play Legacy at the very end of act I (just before the Deep Roads Expedition). You get to talk to your whole family in the hut and you can nab some sweet loot that will tide you over until your next armor set becomes available.

Just to clarify over Bethany and MoA. If she is in the Circle, then initially you cannot recruit her when you first leave on the Quest, which takes you into Hightown. However, once you have hooked up with Tallis, the next point where you can select party members, Bethany will be available. If you select her, on arriving at the hunting party, Prosper will mention how there is already another Amell there and points to Bethany, so you must assume that Prosper invited her and this is why the Circle allowed her out (because Meredith seems influenced by Orlesian nobility and Prosper is good friends with Celene and by inference with the Divine as well)
