While I loathe character threads as saphra pointed out by quoting my post, I have to say I also loathe anti-character threads as well. In my mind both are just breeding grounds for fights.

I don't see the character threads going away any time soon, but we need to figure out some way to let the mods allow character discussions outside of their own threads, or things are just going to stagnate.

For example in the Tali thread, before a big argument started the thread itself was just in a constant loop of posting pics (mostly the same pics) praising tali (in the same ways for about oh... a few hundred pages) and occasionally about geth vs quarians (which isn't directly tali related). It was only broken up by the occasional troll.

That just wasn't going anywhere, it still probably won't as discussion is heavily regulated. Character threads do have legitimate issues with trolls, but a dissenting opinion is not trolling, and can in fact provide productive discussion that can open entire new facets of a character in which to explore.

But not every character thread is like Tali's old thread. I understand what your saying, but there are certain threads that often have productive discussions and are willing to hear other people's opinion, even if they do not like "x" character. They usually provide good insight on the character itself, while providing information on why certain characters grow on certain individuals.

I believe the Mod's don't want another thread where it leads to becoming a chat room (if you get what I mean), instead of an actual thread discussing whichever character.

I just don't see the reason for closing the recent thread because it was productive and had good discussions.

I was only using the Tali thread as an example, I have seen similar instances (and some have been used as an example by other people in this thread) in multiple character threads.

It promotes an us vs them mentality, mainly with the LI characters.

I can see where you get that stance, but I think some people generalize some of the threads too much, just my opinion though.

Um the thread title was "Is Ashley still your girl" If that doesn't say "discussion about Ashley williams's romance" then I don't know what does and that should be discussed in her thread, whether you support her or not if it's only about her it goes in her thread.

People are making the argument that certain discussions would be overlooked or be seen as a "troll", when they are actually just giving another perspective on how they perceive the character.

That doesn't apply to all threads. We get alot of random commenters that stop by tosay that their shepard's were hurt and want an apology and such. You can dicuss Horizon and such but if you jut blatantly just go "oh Ashley sucks for Horizon hurr" then that's trolling a it will be ignored.

Great, now lets get that going for the other threads.

remember how this thread used to be about how much we all loved tali?

good times.

And that is one reason why I hate character threads. Sure loving a character is great, but these character threads forcing discussion and debate into only praise is ridiculous.

You can't discuss anything negative about a character in the character threads because the community in them just wont go along with it (this is a thread for tali fans get out!), yet if you make a thread about it outside of the tali thread, it gets locked and you are told to discuss tali in the... you guessed it tali thread.

The us vs them mentality just isn't healthy for the forums.

Now saphra might get rude quite often but that doesn't discount the points being made. I can see where saphra is coming from here. Rael commited war crimes, (if not to the geth, then to the crew of the ship, they can't all be part of the project. Its a big ship) and to saphra's point of view he needs to pay for them.

I always get tali exonerated, but I can see it as a selfish act depending on why you did it. An entire ship dead because of rael, and shep covers it all up because tali wants him/her to preserve his good name. I see that as a good thing. Tali is a person, she's only "human" if you know what I mean. Her selfish plea is a moment of weakness made in a horrible situation, she panicked. Hell I would think that given enough time, Tali would get over the fact her father had to pay for his crimes and forgive shep, at least partially if he decides to tell the fleet the truth.

The choice to reveal rael's work isn't there to torture tali, its a choice, another example of morale ambiguity bioware has been trying to infuse into their game for years. Their are legitimiate reasons to choose any option in a bioware game.

this is the part where I tell you that when a starving dog is faced with two options of equal value, it'll eventually eat one of them.

if only I had such power haha. I can only speak for the Ash thread but yeah no need to make a new thread to discuss your displeasure with Horizon just pop on in to the existing one.

@OP:

Of course, if the denizens of a any particular support thread simply automatically assume you're a troll (by troll, read opinion they don't like) from the get-go, you're kinda screwed before you even really begin.

For instance, if you point out that a support thread is basically one large circle-jerk they tend to get defensive - cos after all, support is support is support - unless you p!ss off the self-styled masters of any particular thread.  It's kinda like pouring ice-cold water on the dog humping somebody's leg: you might get the dog to stop, but then it just craps everywhere because it's angry and damply chilly.

Too many think "support" means page counts - even if you have to choke the thread with garbage and discussions on a character's sweat/crossbreeding probabilities ad nauseum ad sadassholia.

However, regardless it is support.

But, hey - it's like they say, all publicity is good publicity and I doubt any of the Mighty Forum Gods are really gonna care about how fair or unfair you think it is.

Simply the way t'is.
