Firstly I like the dragonage games but I am very much a novice at these sorts of games so I need some advice.
I'm
just replaying Origins and just don't seem to have any joy against
Gaxkang. I have a dual weapon fighter, Shale, Morrigan & Leliana.
Morrigan invariably gets blown away early and then Gaxkang concentrates
on my fighter soon leaving me with Shale and Leliana, at this point
Gaxkang has Miasma and Aura of weakness going so that many of Shale's
blows and Lel's arrows miss and even those that do hit score 1 point of
damage - I've tried changing Shale's crystal using spirit and nature
damage but this has little effect. I am only playing on normal and
although this is meant to be the hardest fight I just don't seem to be
getting anywhere with it. Help please.
Help fighting Gaxkang

Which one is Gaxkang? Is that the one you fight during the unbound quest in Denerim??

Gosh, it's been a long time since I played that fight, and I probably did it with Wynne, Alistair and Oghren so I'm not sure my experience would be helpful. There's a page on strategy for Gaxkang in the wiki here:

If I remember correctly I had Alistair and the Warden, w & s warriors, occupy him up close, whilst keeping Lelianna and Morrigan out of melee range.
Possibly try changing your party if you can, if you continue having trouble, I could not quite fit Shale into my tactics very well.
As always take plenty of health potions.

Mana Clash, if you have it.

I usually use Wynne as healer-mage, and use Force Field to protect her when she is attacked directly. Warden, Alistair, and another character make up the rest of the party.
It is one of the more difficult battles in the game. Some nice items come with victory, so it is worth doing.

Swap out Leliana for Wynne. Two tough melee fighters and two mages is a better mix, I think.
I generally find the best way to deal with Gaxkang is with magic. Mana clash is a total winner! Glyph of Neutalisation is also pretty good for cancelling out his spells. He's weak to fire (so flaming weapons is good) and not immune to frost (so the odd cone of cold might work too in a pinch). Also, try to wear spell resistant gear.

Thanks for your comments guys, started again from scratch and made sure that Morrigan had Mana Clash which was a massive help. Completed the whole game (on normal) without getting my party wiped out which is a big achievement for a novice like me - although my other personal achilles heel of the mages asunder part of the fade was a close call as usual.

Gaxkang is very very hard with some builds, but when using magebane/mana-draining spells it can be too damn easy, I suggest trying that
