Link to an interview with Trent Oster and NWNHD wishes

 I got a chance to interview Trent Oster he worked on NWN and all of the expansions. Seeing as how the interview was related to a rerelease of MDK2HD I asked if NWN would get the HD rerelease treatment.

I got the impression that it could happen if whoever holds the liscense would allow it and if the demand was strong enough. Register on the site and comment about wanting to see an HD remake of NWN. I'd love to see an HD remake of NWN and I'm sure that I'm not alone.

So show some support in the comment section so that we can show whoever holds the rights that there is indeed an interest and that it would be worth the investment of time and money.

This would require that Atari and EA work together to produce a product that Atari would profit from.

Then there's the whole 'Atari lost the D&D license' thing... would this be seen as a "new" D&D game or an old one "reimagined".

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but I think these two issues would be huge stumbling blocks.

I think most of these issues could be overcome. To me it seems the greatest problem would be opposition from WotC of them doing anything that could spark an increase in interest in 3rd edition, considering how hostile they have been to it.

Would the HD version of the game just be NWN with higher res graphics? It would be a good test of whether the companies who own the NWN property can work together on a project. If they could, it would be a hopeful indicator of other things.

The specific issue of a graphics refresh would be nice, I guess, but the the "HD" thing is largely a marketing gambit used to sell stuff. Community-made mods already improve the base game graphics quite a bit. If a refreshed version of NWN is to be released, I'd be more interested in functional improvements to the game mechanics that can't be done with mods (e.g. make zen archery work for ranged touch attacks) or, if there are GUI improvements to be made, then make the display panels open below the action queue and stop hiding the map.

Well, if anyone could make a NWNHD- and do a good job on it- it would be Trent Oster and Cameron Tofer.  I'm assuming any such upgrade would involve not just higher resolution textures (presumably from old masters) but a similar revamping of the graphics system to include at least real bumpmapping.  I don't imagine anything in the actual game would change.  The number of people who would probably have to sign off on that would be prohibitive.

Without knowing for sure whether BeamDog is even considering working on such a thing and if so, what they'd be shooting for product-wise, I am sort of ambivilant.  It really depends on how much they change and how assessible those changes are to modders.   I'd hate to "trade up" to a revamped graphics engine only to find some avenues closed off or changed, and have to go back to square one reverse-engineering what can be done with the engine.

For instance, a few weeks ago a modder named Baba Yaga posted about a new method of doing waterfalls and flowing water.  I'm sure at least a couple of us had played around with the effect but AFAIK he was the first one to nail the look and publish a video showing it.  Beautiful work, isn't it?  You won't see anything like that in official NWN, SoU or HotU content, though.  It was an approach which was possible given understanding how the current graphics engine works.  I think there are lots of techniques still undiscovered, especially involving TXI files, and I would be a little concerned that some of those possibilities might go away depending on just how much the engine was revamped.

Just my 2 coppers.  I'd still almost certainly buy such a revamped version as long as it was compatible for netplay with existing 1.69 clients.

I would be shocked to the point of a heart attack if this ever came to fruition.

ANY thing that updates the engine, new graphics etc, requires a new license deal. WotC has already stated, in more ways than one, that they are NOT interested in continuing support for 3rd edition games. Believe me, the final "patch" to 1.69 had licensing hurdles to cross and was almost nixed by WotC from the outset. That was a "patch" that upgraded the graphics and game play abilities of an already licensed product. That license has expired by the way. So a NEW license would have to be negotiated.

There are several game companies that are attempting NEW games along the NWN lines. MMO's, etc... if anyone was going to develop for such a NEW game they would want the ability to make as much profit as possible. That is not likely to happen by having to cater to NWN1 diehards like us.

We demand too much because we know what currently IS possible, and what we want is more, not less options for builders and cc creators. Like OTR mentioned, bump mapping would be a great new feature to add... but how many folks are serious enough gamers, dedicated to NWN1 to make a company wish to invest the funds necessary to generate new code to merge with/from the old code, to allow those new features to be added?

It doesn't hurt to dream, but the business decisions necessary for something like this to occur are phenomenal, and not very likely to find someone/somebank to finance such an endeavor.

P.S. Me having to register to be able to comment also negates me ever considering making a comment on yet another spam producing website.

I would love to have a new graphic engine for Neverwinter Nights. Something with the right lighting, bloom, HDR, depth of field, etc... one that renders alpha map shadows of foliage instead of polys.

Damit Trent, make it happen!! :-P

For a short moment I had a strange dream... Damnit. So no updated engine. And the one thing we tileset creators realy need is a functional shadow system, doesnt matter if its realtime or shadowmaped imo.

Since Bioware have already said, that 1.69 would be the definitive last ever update/support provided for the nwn1 game,
The feasibility of this seems highly unlikely.

If an external company were willing to do the work, and Bioware and Atari gave them permission to do it, then it might be feasible.
I dont believe Bioware would touch it though.

Since Trent Oster´s company Overhaul games is doing BGEE i had hoped they will pick up nwn1 for enhancing the engine and not bioware tough.
