WHy is there no local co-op splitscreen?

Because you can't charge used game buyers $10 for a code to play offline splitscreen. /cynicism

"That money should've been spent on single-player."

I hate how every thread on MP just devolves into this.

If we didn't have butt hurt rpg fans this wouldn't be BSN...

I gotta say, I'm really not impressed, based on what I've heard so far. Still, let's see what happens. Maybe Bioware will unveil something incredible down the line.

That's what I was expecting. If you want good mp, buy Gears of War or Halo.

I would if I had an Xbox.

But seriously, though, I'm a very single-player person.  This co-op stuff looks like a gentle way to nudge me into the realm of multiplayer.

That's the joy of in-between genre games like Mass Effect.  I don't much care for pure shooters or pure RPGs.  ME fit me like a glove because it was both and neither.

Co-Op is a great way to get in multi-player, there's significantly less bullcrap than in competitive multiplayer. Just be prepared to yell "WHY THE HELL ARE YOU NOT REVIVING ME?!" repeatedly at your monitor.

And you and I are going on at least one MP Coop mission.  Just saying, because I will drag you into it.  Kicking and screaming, whether you like it or not.

Voice chat, team building, and generally knowing your role in things makes this usually moot.  Even the best teams fall apart though.

Not gonna lie, when they annoucned this I was not happy about it. I've warmed up to it lately though, mostly because whatever else you want to say about it, playing co-op is FUN. It's the fact that this is co-op and optional that saves it for me.
I'm tentatively looking forward to it at this point. Still room to be annoyed though, when it's finally released and there are no female turians/drell/krogan in sight. *sigh*

With my dirtbag friends?  Such a scenario is inevitable.

Me: WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

Friend: Getting ammo.

Me: YOU JUST GOT AMMO.

Friend: I like to keep it topped off anyway.

Me: DUDE I COULD REALLY USE SOME HELP WITH THIS BANSHEE RIGHT NOW.

Friend: Hold your horses I'm coming.

Me: CRAP I'M DOWN HELP ME UP HELP ME UP.

Friend: You are such a whiner someti--*sniped*

Me: FOR F*CK'S SAKE!

Friend: Oh.  Oops.

Depends on who you get to play with I guess. You can hop in any TF2 game and you'll probably be on a decent team trying to heal and cap points, and for the most part everyone will be competant and try to help out the new guy. Or you can join a public match in GoW and feel your IQ drop.

Has it only been the x-box version that has been made available for these reviews? I read a few and noticed things like..."without the power wheel to pause and more slowly, strategically direct the action as you would in the single player campaign, Mass Effect’s combat is a lot less distinctive." as a recurring theme.

Who actually plays that way?

The only reason I have ever paused is to switch weapons, to a weapon that wasn't the previous weapon, and that could easily be solved by hotkeys.

Of course.  And you can helpfully remind me what class I'm playing.

Me: SOMEONE GET THESE GUYS OFF ME!

You: A little busy helping Hathur.  Just cloak and they'll leave you alone.

Me: WHAT DO Y--oh I can cloak?

You: You're an infiltrator, aren't you?

Me: ... Yes?

You: *sigh* Bottom rank, here we come.

But then its EA's bad decision and not biowares... Someone has still decided to allocate resouces to multiplayer when they could be spending it on Single player.

Whether it is wasted or not is entirely subjective... but that money absolutely could have been used on SP... and I don't think I am alone in wishing it had been

Seriously?  this is laughable now. I can understand the argument that you may think it was originally SP only and then some suits at EA, at a really late stage, told BW to do MP within the existing budget. (but you;ll never know if it is true or not so kind of pointless, and it goes counter to absolutely everything we have heard)

... but that they originally would have said "do MP and SP" and set the budget for doing both....  and you think they would have set the same budget for SP only? That's a total joke.

I have no idea what you are trying to say... but if opportunity cost is laughable to you then more power to you I guess...

EA/bioware has finite resouces...

EA/bioware allocates those resources...

EA/bioware can allocate all those resouces entirely to ME single player...

EA/bioware can allocate all those resouces to ME multiplayer....

EA/bioware can allocate some to ME and some to SP...

EA/bioware can allocate it all to other games and not bother spending anythine on ME...

EA/bioware can take all those resources to build a giant golden monument to Hawke....

EA/bioware HAS chosen to allocate some of their finite resouces to mass effect MP...

EA/bioware COULD have used those MP resouces to further polish ME SP...

You need x amount of dollars to make mass effect 3.

You have  y amount of dollars left over after you subtract x from your total amount of money you started with.

You could use that money to
1. add a couple side missions, weapons, and characters that could easily be made and sold as DLC.
2. create a multiplayer mode that while not innovative is fun and gives you the opportunity to make more DLC and appeal to a greater audience.

The obvious business choice is going to be 2.

Not saying i like it. Just saying it makes sense from a business perspective.

You both know that you talking about how this game was funded is, at beast, pure conjecture and hypothesis?

Alright, so it's seven pages in already but I just got home from big, all-consuming RL hoopla. I'm reasonably certain this has been brought up at least twice in the preceding seven pages but just in case it's been somehow skipped-over in lieu of all the other articles, here's an interesting (read: disappointing) tidbit:

Unfortunately for us and our timing, we were stuck with a female human character – which incidentally is the only species with a male and female to pick from – who specialised as a Sentinel.

Me too. I'm a huge fan of what Casey and the team have done with this franchise, I really am, but if there's one huge aversion of theirs I simply cannot abide by it's this silly "gah, no females for the cool races, man, 'cause like, how do we make them hot?" foolishness. I mean, I can't think of any other reason for it and it's pretty lame.

I suspected we'd just get palette swaps of existing models for alien races.

Knowing EA they most likely locked the female models of the other races to sell as DLC alongside an overpriced map pack. Image IPB

Now if they had included quarians from the get-go there would be more female models to choose from.

Indeed.  Since when does "female" mean "hot babe with boobs?"

Come on, come on, it's the last mold waiting to be broken...

Booooooo!

Come on now. How hard is it to make alien females? You already made the quarias and the asari.
