NPCs not dropping their items

I've run into a weird bug where certain NPCs don't leave a loot bag when killed. It only seems to affect NPCs with hand placed items in their inventory and not random loot, as some mobs do drop the usual random crap like cure light wounds potions and a little gold. I first noticed it in the goblin cave where you rescue Lastri as the chieftain didn't drop that nifty short sword I'd been expecting. The next time I noticed that the firenewt chieftain didn't leave a loot bag either so I had to console myself the axe to finish that quest. After visiting a few more places where I know NPCs always drop a certain item, I noticed this seems to be happening with every single one of them. This only affects NPC inventories, not containers. I just played the OC before this so it seems to be limited to SoZ. It's a damn weird bug so I'm not expecting much, but if anyone has even a guess as to what might be up and/or how to fix, that'd be great. Thanks.

Edit: I also noticed the Samarachan patrols on the overland map were dropping random loot when they were killed by monsters, which is not supposed to happen.

Do you have anything installed in your override folder? If so clear out the override folder and see if that solves the problem.

I tried twice starting a new game after this happened, first with an empty override and again with the same stuff as when the bug happened, and everything went perfectly normally on both tries so it doesn't seem to be anything in override. My best hypothesis is that the gnomes in my party tinkered with my game in order to stop me from adventuring and getting them killed, but I've yet to find the proof (sly bastards).

Anyway, thanks for trying to help, Kaldor. Guess this'll remain a mystery and I'll have to restart. Luckily I didn't get terribly far.

The only possibility that comes to my mind is that you had something in override that affected the generic spawn script at the time that you first loaded the areas with the NPCs that aren't dropping things. Therefore when they were first spawned either their items weren't created or they were destroyed. Since creatures characteristics are saved across reloads, once they are messed up they will remain messed up unless you start over. If you had something in your override that caused this then removing it would not have helped for the NPCs in areas you had already been in, but it would have helped with NPCs in the new areas. Starting over with an empty override folder - or only very trusted mods that you know have nothing to do with spawning or inventory - sounds like the best course.

That sounds logical. I have in fact modified the module load script but as I said, it's worked perfectly in the past (and seems to work perfectly since then again), and that shouldn't have anything to do with stuff in NPCs inventories afaik. I also had mysterious issues in the OC where my computer would completely freeze and the screen would turn into a row of black and gray vertical lines (which gave a freaking heart attack the first time as I thought my graphics card went supernova on me) which always happened when I fought a pack of enemies in a specific spot, and I had to either bypass them with invisibility or draw them to another spot. I guess a reinstall is the only thing I can try to perhaps reduce the chance of these mysterious issues in the future.

Having the same problem in a mod I'm writing, my kobold corpses aren't dropping items. Could it be some property selected?

That's not the same problem. The NPC's in SoZ are designed to drop their items so if someone is playing SoZ and nothing is dropping then that is a problem. Since you are writing your own mod then you just need to set the properties on the NPC's and their loot properly. You should ask about that in the Toolset forum.

The items you mention in your first post are weapons. Do any of your characters have Disarm?

Edit: Just noticed this thread is a month old. I hadn't seen it then.
