So my party was gallivanting about the Druid Grove in the rain minding their own business, when suddenly a lightning bolt jolted down and one-shotted my mage Bhaalspawn.

...

Is this a bug or an actual implementation? I thought the gods weren't allowed to interfere.

It is probably not the Gods interfering. It may just be a Call Lightning spell that is still in place, this is a 3rd level Druid spell. Druid who cast it may be dead but the spell will run for 1 turn/level anyway.

Call lightning actually last only 1 round/4levels (5 maximum).

Random lightning is possible in some outdoor maps; it strips 50% of your maximum hitpoints and ignores any electrical resistance you might have.

Indeed. I have seen it happen on random party members on several occasions. Sometimes it doesn't seem to have an effect; which is weird. Talos probably isn't interfering though. Throwing storms around is just what he does. ;)

I never encountered this problem when playing BG 2...it's odd indeed! :o

When you were recovering the stolen Lathander ring, had you lied about being a follower of Talos?

I did and I found it really cool how my character was immune to the divine punishment that followed.

(sort of how I loved killing Vampires with Vampire Touch and Dragons with Dragon's Breath - I think some day I'll try petrifying some basilisks (touching a ghoul sounds perverted somehow, methinks))
