As I understand it, the Rite of Tranquility requires a significant amount of lyrium.  Given that they have an army of addicts, I assume that the chantry keeps a close watch on their inventory of lyrium.  So...where does he get it?  I guess he could get it from the smugglers, and that could be why he's down in the tunnels where we find him with Ella.  But lyrium is still expensive.  Where's his financial backing coming from?

I have to think that unless Ser Alrik has some backers we don't know about, Meredith knows all about what's going on and is secretly supporting it against Elthina's stated wishes.

Or maybe it's just a plot hole.

There's no indication that the Rite of Tranquility involves lyrium. It is a magic ritual, but that's it. I think you're confusing the Harrowing with the Rite of Tranquility.

But even if you're correct (which I'm pretty sure you're not), templars have ways of illegally acquiring lyrium to feed their addiction. Hell, the Warden could potentially get involved in lyrium-smuggling.

According to the wiki (can't find it in the codex: " the Rite of Tranquility, which involves the use of a magical brand made of lyrium to cut off a mage's connection to the Fade: they can no longer dream.}

I suppose the brand made of lyrium might not use it up, however.  But even so, I would think access to an object that was made of lyrium and had such an effect would be strictly controlled.

Mistakes are pretty frequent on the Wiki. Unless one of the devs chimes in here or you can find a Codex or bit dialogue that states implicitly that lyrium is involved in the Rite of Tranquility, I would consider that info suspect.

You can ask a Tranquil in Origins how the process is done and he says it involves branding the forehead with magic. Lyrium doesn't come up.

Lyrium is used for the rite.

Is the brand a necessary part of the process, or just something they do so you can recognise them?

It's part of the rite, the lyrium being what severs the link to the Fade.

Fair enough. I wasn't aware of that comment by DG.

Anyways, my earlier point stands: templars have plenty of illegal ways of acquiring lyrium.

If a process involves branding the forehead with magic, then lyrium is probably involved in some way, if not with the ritual itself, then with the process for creating the object. Of course since Tranquil are the people involved with making runes and magical items, it would seem that to obtain the necessary equipment requires the assistance of earlier tranquil. Therefore it is possible for Alric to by-pass the usual system, where he would have to go to say, Cullen, for the equipment, because all he has to do is to ask the Tranquil responsible to provide him with the necessary stuff. Origins showed us that Tranquil are a bit like computers, providing you supply the correct information, they will give you what you want - they do not question if you are entitled to have it. If Alric is senior enough to have signatory powers to gain items from the tranquil, then he will be given them. If not, then either forging a signature or coercing someone into giving him them would not be beyond his scope.

What I question more, is why no one queried the increase in the number of tranquil appearing (particularly if you believe Anders and they are obviously post harrowing mages living in the Circle). If, as he also states, it is illegal for post harrowed mages to be made tranquil, then Orsino at least should have been raising the roof about it. I posted elsewhere that I wonder if this is what led to the original breakdown in relations with Meredith, because Orsino was making complaints and she refused to look into it. You'd think that if a Templar had suggested mass tranquilisation of the entire mage population to both Meredith and the Divine, had been turned down, and then large numbers of mages start turning up tranquil, that it wouldn't be too hard to work out who was responsible.

Really it all comes back to the gap in Kirkwall between what should have been done according to the law governing Circles, and the reality for the mages who lived there.

I suspect Ser Alrik could be getting financial backing from helping the smugglers. They'd need an inside man and it isn't as if Ser Alrik is a shining example of what a Templar should be.

I agree with this, too.  Seriously, the gallows isn't any bigger than an average high school.  If a student were to suddenly become tranquil in a high school, everybody there would know about it within a day or two.  I find it hard to believe that even one mage could be made tranquil without Meredith and Orsino knowing about it, let alone a noticeable increase in the number of tranquil mages.  And they'd know if they were post-harrowing or not.

I hadn't thought of that, but I suppose I should have.  It's no different than a drug addict financing his addiction by selling to other addicts.  I guess it still kind of depends how much lyrium is needed, though.

I'm going to say the carta. Dwarves are like the columbian drug lords of dragon age with lyrium, at least that is what I think.

So you missed the part of killing all the Lyrium-smugglers while trying to save the mages from tranquility quest.. good next run you do, you'll have something new to kill.

The carta and coterie, of course. That one dwarf talks about the trouble of smuggling lyrium but it's much to profitable to not be smuggled constantly (hell, the Warden can be a lyrium smuggler in Origins).

The carta, being dwarven, are known to smuggle lyrium. I can't image the coterie allowing them to monopolize the lyrium trade. There will be dwarves in Orzammar willing to sell anywhere on the surface (the smuggler in Origins didn't strike me as carta).

The Chantry's grip on the lyrium trade only spurs on these illegal trades. The demand's there and the gold is waiting for those who can smuggle the stuff. I imagine it's like any illegal substance in any major city. It's there and it'll always be there if you know where to look.

There's no need to invoke any underworld means of obtaining lyrium. Alrik remained in a position of authority and Meredith clearly had no interest in reining him in even upon denial of the Tranquil Solution.

It's not as if the increasing number of tranquil was subtle.

There are many things that are widely known to the students of a high school but are "unknown" to the teachers and principal of a high school. Witness the suicides brought about by cyber bullying that went on in recent years. So it is very possible for mages to be forceably made tranquil while Orsino remained ignorant of it. My impression of Orsino is he is out of his league as the local head mage. Meredith could have known of it but given her prejudices, she could have chosen to ignore it. So it is left to Anders and Hawke to resolve the problem.
