Bioware doesn't exactly have a good track record when it comes to creating games with a grim and gritty atmosphere.
I remember when I first started hearing about Dragon Age Origins, and how it was inspired by George R Martin's ASoIF series.  Man was I let down after playing it..  Image IPB

The game attempted to be dark and oppressive, but utterly failed in that endeavor in my opinion.  Maybe it was the setting, or perhaps the implementation, but the game was more akin to high fantasy, than dark fantasy.

Now the Witcher on the other hand, is much more successful at creating a dark, gritty and foreboding atmosphere, so I'd be more supporting of CDPR developing a World of Darkness game.

Keep in mind gritty is not the same thing as horror. I am not referring to that Resident Evil shock gag style of horror. I mean terror of a more psychological and personal nature akin to Silent Hill 2. The biggest hurdle in producing a faithful WoD game is capturing the essence of a given setting's horror and conveying it to the player. In that, CDPR has no greater advantage than any other RPG developer.

That was where Troika's game failed. It touched upon the themes of personal horror with Heather Poe's story, but fell short of showing the player that being a vampire means one is truly damned. A few NPCs telling that to us is not remotely the same thing.

VTMB (Bloodlines) is on sale for 5 euros at Steam just now. A steal at this price already gifted 3 times.

Is that considered the best of the series? I might get it.

Bloodlines was the only one I played, but I heard it was the best in the series.

I can't see a World of Darkness MMo.

And while i did enjoy Bloodline tremendously , it didn't push the envelop nearly as far as i would have liked. That said , i don't think Vampire lends it self easily to a computer game format.

If anything they ought to consider Apocalypse or Ascension. Fighting the Wyrm or Technocracy is a lot easy to work with than to have the primary antagonist be the Player him/her-self.

There is no "serie". There are only two V:TM computer games - Bloodlines and Redemption:
  • made by two completely different developers,
  • different gameplay types: Bloodlines is more like Bethesda games (FPP/TPP combat, single character) and Redemption more close to Bioware games (squad based with tactical combat),
  • different RPG mechanics (Redemption is much much closer to original PnP rules)
  • both aren't linked in any way with each other.

I only ever played Vampire the Masquerade (and not to completion), and that was a long time ago, but I don't recall it ever being a horror in any way shape or form; any more than say the Witcher is.  I figured it was just another dark fantasy World, with the main difference being that you are one of the undead.

That said, even though CDPR may not have specific experience in creating these kinds of settings, I still think they would do a better job than Bioware Image IPB

A lot of people would agree with me, in saying that the Witcher series is perhaps one of, if not THE most immersive RPG experiences out there.  And this is mostly due to the very gritty and somber approach in which CDPR creates the World of the Witcher..

I think all fantasy RPG devs should play Amnesia: Dark Descent. Any dungeon crawl should contain some of the atmosphere and suspense of that game.

TW2 was on the right track with claws of madness and the mine adventure in Vergen, but it still wasn't outright scary.

I doubt they'll be making anything else other than Mass Effect and Dragon Fail in the next couple of years

It had a different style. It was dark, but like you mentioned it was a bit cartoony. I still like it for what it is, and I haven't seen any better games based on WoD myself.

The Ocean View Hotel map I think was particularly good. Perhaps if they had more time to develop the game, the rest of it would have been as good as the Santa Monica part.

Again, I would like to shamelessly promote Dark Corners of the Earth. It's a much darker game. There is a crushing atmosphere and a sense of, well, evil that I haven't seen in other games. It does this without relying on the shock style of "horror" that you see in so many movies. It helps a lot that your character is actually quite weak compared to the horrors he faces, and even one human foe can be a significant threat.

At least under EA there's a chance for some WoD games even if they're terrible unlike with CCP owning the rights.

Yes. Because the world of gaming needs Twilight: The SubPar Action Game Pretending to be an RPG because it has Romances, a BioWare production.
