I used to be a member of the old forums, and I recently dusted off BG2 and decided to try and solo a Priest of Lathander > Thief dual class. But I'm not yet sure at what level I should dual. Since I'm soloing, transition time is a real issue, so I don't think I'll dual later than level 15. Level 15 gives an extra level 4 and 5 spell each day, and Animate Dead makes skeleton warriors. That's not a whole lot, so level 14 is also an appealing option. The other options as I see it are levels 11 and 12 because of 6th level spells.
What are your opinions? (I have ToB, so the XP cap is 8M). I recall that frabjous was quite fond of this class, unfortunately all the olds threads no longer exist.

Every addittional level would make sense, since this is a spell casting class. Not only do your spells get more powerful, you can also cast more of them. I think I would try going with level 15.
But in the end, it's the same situation as with pretty much every dualclass: Do you think you can pull it off? If yes, then a higher level is in pretty much for every combination advantageous (exceptions being those where you are only looking for a an inherent level 1 bonus as with the R(2)->Cleric), only a cleric usually gains more from a level than a generic fighter or berserker would.

AnonymousHero dualled a priest of Lathander at level 21 not long ago. That was to a mage, but the logic was to used stacked boons of Lathander to allow 10 APR with improved haste. The same logic could apply to a thief, though the availability of spell scrolls would be the limiting factor.

Level 15 sounds like a good time to me as well. Since you are dualing to a thief, you will regain your cleric abilities faster than any other class (other than your fellow sort-of thief bards) thanks to the lesser leveling requirements for thieves.

Are you implying a Cleric>Bard dual-class is feasible? If so, how? It would surely be a powerful character, but isn't it hardcoded a Bard can't be part of a multi- or dual-class combo? (if not: how do you tweak it?)

I think he was simply referring to the fact that the only one who can level as quickly as a thief is a bard.

Thanks for all the replies. Waiting to obtain a higher caster level is a strong point. I'll load up on patience and go for level 15. (Dualled thief with inactive cleric is a rather horrible class).

Yes H_T that is what I was referring to, not that bards can be dualed.

Good to see you again Ecoris!
I just thought I'd note that high level thief duals are relatively easy to execute not only because of the exp progression charts but also the availability of easy experience. If you refrain from bashing and setting off traps during your Cleric days, then you can just stealth around and get a bunch of levels unlocking/disarming stuff.
You can also steal scrolls, recruit a mage, and have him or her memorize them for the EXP.
You may also want to run around collecting your quest EXP after the dual.
All of this can detract from the role playing experience however. Your call naturally.
Enjoy your run Ecoris!
Best,
A.
