So, why does Ashley look radically different?

Yep, changing characters visually to please those who couldn't care less about the character or how well written he was because he wasn't superficially sexy enough is the logical and right thing to do. No reason caring about the actual fans, who just want the well written character back, with an understandable development and not-ridiculous clothes.

Thing is, if I had enough faith in the writers I wouldn't be as concerned. But I don't, actually, and even if had I would not be completely convinced that the writing actually matches what the visual department designs.

edit: Image IPBed regarding my fears about flawed communication between writing and design teams. Nice to know I'm not alone, Sgt Stryker!

Guess who that is to Shepard's right.

When I saw it I knew I was thinking left, but because it's facing us...you get it.
I changed it as soon as I posted it Xili.  You're just too quick.

Character re-design. Happens with every sequel. She looks great imo, but I would like her hair pulled back as that seemed consistent with her personality of a hard-edged, practical soldier.

So why hasn't Shepard been radically re-designed (barring minor aesthetic changes to the N7 armor)? Why hasn't Joker shaved his beard?

Shepard is customizable. Joker's appearance isn't going to be scrutinized as much as Ashley's, or anyone else on our team.

It's also a little unfair that Ash can't update her look when come March a lot of Shepards will be going back under the knife for their second major facial reconstruction.

Everyone knows retcons are only okay if the player does it.

Changing my character's face is the ONLY retcon that I find acceptable. jessielou, bioware's butchering of Ashley's character for the piggy masses is NOT acceptable.

So far, we've only seen her appearance, not her character (excluding the leaked script, which I have not read, and will not read). Character and appearance are not necessarily one and the same; just look at Miranda and Samara. Then read about how their characters were written.

Note that I'm not trying to defend Bioware in this regard. I'm merely pointing out that, at least in Miranda's and Samara's cases, their visual design people and their writing team weren't communicating as well as they should have been. This may also be true with Ashley; we'll have to wait and see. Well, those of us who didn't read the story leaks will wait and see.

I haven't read the script either, and don't plan on it, but I might in the coming months, depending on my stance of how I feel the game's direction and whether or not I'll purchase it.

Sadly, though, it does speak volume's about bioware's disregard of Ashleys character, because she clearly states her stance on that very visual matter.

@jessie that was only a photoshop picture Image IPB

First, I was joking. Second, I don't think she looks different enough to even call it a retcon. I've only really seen pictures so far, and maybe I'll change my mind when I see her in the game but as of right now it just looks to me like she cleaned herself up a bit.

It's a retcon because of her stance on light armor/skampy outifts, which she verbally stated in ME1, but obviously that game never existed to the majority of the "fans" here and bioware nowadays... Image IPB

hooray mass of wafare 3: call of N7...

Who in whatever games you're referring to in that butchered portmanteau wear "skampy" outfits?
And for all we know (very little), she may have just come to appreciate mobility more.

Yep. Boob windows are GREAT for combat mobility! Especially when there are searing-hot "ammo" clips flying around! Great observation!

You know, I see people complaining elsewhere that Bioware is pandering to the fans of ME1 over ME2, and how the ME2 squad has been mistreated, and then I go to this thread and read this. Apparently Bioware is simultaneously pandering to both groups while screwing over the other. Quite a feat, that.

Maybe what we've seen is just her wearing a service uniform. Maybe like in ME, when onboard the Normandy, characters wear "regular" clothes. When ashore they wear battle armor

Well, even if it was as a woman I stand by our right to change our minds, hit up a hair dresser, and go with the sexy dress instead of jeans once in a while.

So if a character isn't as important or popular it's logical for him to stay the same, but if characters are actually loved it's okay to mess around with them?

Certainly they don't seem to be much of a hindrance, judging by ME2. I suspect it has something to do with the shields. Either that, or it's not her full combat armor, because I know a couple of different ones have been mentioned.

Ugh...ME2 was just...stupid in squadmate combat apparel...wow. Boobies over practicality and lore consistency...yaay bringing in the masses...

That right there in the magazine shot is her "armor." That one where she is wearing a suit similar to Kaidan's is a photoshop.

@Cerberus You haven't played ME1, have you?

Kinetic barriers do not stop slow-moving objects, like recently-ejected bright red-hot thermal clips. This is actually another argument against Samara's and Miranda's outfits. Even Jack's, if her concentration gets broken and she can't sustain a biotic barrier.

It's perfectly managable screw over both groups, by neglecting the ME2 characters and ruining the ME1 characters while giving them more attention. Image IPB

And I don't see anyone claiming that the changes in Ash's appearance are an attempt to pander to ME2 players. It's just pandering to superficial people who don't care about the character in general.

That's just it though - she should be more effective at getting the job done in jeans (read: armor, a la ME1) than in a dress (read: her ME3 fetish brigade get-up).

Thank you.

It's not about Ashley's freedom as a woman, she was very clear on how she felt about it. Therefore, having the sudden 180 from respectable marine to stereotypical boobieslololol sex object.. that's unacceptable to people who actually care about the story, and the characters.

Go back to COD, will you? It's obvious you have no interest in the actual story. Just please, stop talking. You make yourself look stupider with every new post.

There's some on that page, but you may want to look through the whole thread; plenty of "Those of us who preferred the ME2 squad over the ME1 squad got shafted" comments throughout.

While we're on this subject, I demand that Adept MaleShep should be allowed to fight shirtless, wearing nothing but his N7 banana-hammock. After all, he's got his biotics, so he's basically invincible, right? Right?!

Edit: Same goes for Kaidan.
