So, why does Ashley look radically different?

But more to the point the second pic above is obviously placeholder but has anybody who is grumbling about the new outfit considered how they would act or the extent to which they would complain if that had been her casual outfit all along?

Second pic is obviously a combat situation or mission and everyone else is wearing armor. Ashley is not.

Well, it must also be kept in mind that it's not just the amount of skin that's shown, but where it is.
Anyway, for a casual outfit, it sure doesn't look very casual. From what I can tell, it's supposed to be what Spectres wear when they're still performing their duties, but when things aren't exploding around them. Then again, it also has those back rails that rifles can attach to, so it has the potential for use in combat. At the same time, it does evoke that "miniskirt + thigh-high boots" look Ash joked about. It seems almost like Bioware wanted to combine a dress uniform, a combat jumpsuit, and nightclub wear, and somehow ended up with... this... thing.

Does anyone else think that if there never were any negative response over Miranda's outfit. We would never have gotten armor for Ashley?
Who cares at this point. We got Ash in a outfit that speaks to her character more than the other outfit did.
um, no. This outfit is far from her character as we know it. It may fit her new character in ME3, we don't know. But it definitely doesn't fit her character as of now.
It certainly doesn't seem to respect the vision that Ashley's original writer had for her when he wrote the character.
How did I miss this post? Completely agree! Well said.

That dude is Vega before his appearance was finalized, just like how Ashley's head is purple before her armor is finalized. placeholders my dear reed.
Finalized or not, it's still full armor, and even a helmet!
Purple headed Ash: So Ash's armor wasn't finalized but everyone else's is? I find that...unlikely...especially since it's her hair that's glitched and not the outfit.

Funny cuz her original writer has her talking about getting in thigh highs and mini skirts! It's a line that is said unprovoked with no bearings on the roamnce, you can NOT romance her and she'll still say it. She says it no matter what to male shep and Kaidan does a similar line to femshep. She openly talks about an outfit liek that and this one isn't even CLOSE. She's completely covered unlike her other casual outfit where she's in a tshirt instead of a jacket. Plus this one has padding on it. so your "wh0resuit" is far from it.
It's not about it being a catsuit. It's about it being a silly, aesthetically displeasing outfit that doesn't fit her persona of a professional, competant marine. It's a costume, not a uniform.

You need to choose particular dialogue to get that response - and also be nice / flirty with her on the Normandy by memory and be male.
She's also saying it as something she wouldn't normally do.
ALSO - later in the game - UNPROVOKED she talks about the Asari commando suits as being less than ...appropriate.
The suit she is wearing is against her character, they also say in the art book that they deliberately sexualised Ashley which is not what Ashley ever appeared to be.
There is a fine line between doing something for the game / story and doing it for the sake of visual stimulation in players. This is clearly visual stimulation for the sake of visual stimulation.

Somebody forgot to tell Joker to put on his armor at the end of the suicide mission then since he laying down some supressing fire out of the ship too.

Those lines with Ashley chiding Kaiden about shore leave and how she was a hellcat off the battlefield really missed her character then. Somebody better tell Bioware they messed up with the original version and didn't write her how she was supposed to be.

It's not a nonsensical point, yes it is somewhat exaggerated but let's consider the circumstances. In the beginning Ash is offduty in her casual/dress uniform. Then it's OMFG the reapers are here so she and the Normandy's crew scramble to get to the ship and get in positon to pick Anderson and Shepard up so they can escape/ Nowhere there would it seem reasonable for her to take time expecting to jump into the fray (which she didn't do) and put on her suit of combat armor.

oh really? You realize ashley wasn't born wearing a bun right? letting her hair down is natural. her new suit actually HAS some armor pads on it unlike her Tshirt and cargo pants look. It also DOES cover more of her up since the jacket has arms and comes with gloves. She shows LESS skin in ME3, not more. it's character development. Soemthing probably along the lines of when Joker said "Garrus finally got that stick out of his ass"Icinix wrote...

You are forgetting that Vega is also in the scene before the reapers attack and is also in the scene where they show up to pick up Shepard.
I'd wager they were already on the ship when the attack happened. Either way... why did Vega get all armored up while Ash didn't? hmmmm?

The better question to ask is what is the commanding officer of the ship doing down on the cargo ramp during an attack like that, which is of course for player familiarity.

I imagine it went down something like this: Anderson was about to hit on Ash after she was made a Spectre so he woulnd't be breaking the all the regs but then he realzied she was Shepard's sloppy seconds so he says she might as well have the Normandy since it's his sloppy seconds too. (I'm sure this would be better if it was Gmagnumified)

I don't understand why people are still talking about this. Look at the concept art; the blue bodysuit is Ashley's casual appearance. Her hair is tied up when she's in combat. As we've all seen, the vast majority of the returning characters in the game aren't dressed for combat in the very beginning, Ashley included.
The issue has moved beyond the fact that it is casual wear. (which in itself is still not completely understood. It is casual but is it an option for combat too? That leads into a new debate about too much player control over looks but I digress) It is now moved back to the outfit itself not fitting with the character, or it does fit depending on tastes.
The topic will go on until the game is released, and probably some time after if it does not satisfy everyone.
