So, why does Ashley look radically different?

Ashley is one of few characters you can call "life-like". No horrible past, no major flaws ... just like the girl next door. Of course, this girl has a boomstick and tends to blow stuff up, but still.
She could be your Sergeant in the battlefield. It works.

I'd rather she stick to her values made evident in ME1.
She'd rather be covered head to toe in armor and kick your ass than wear skin tight "armor" and seduce you during a gunfight.

And her legs look exposed, which is a problem. What have you done BioWare?LPPrince wrote...

I don't mean to imply that she'll be less realistic if she ends up more sexualized. We have Kim Kardashian as proof that there are "real" people who are sexualized first and foremost before anything else.
My thing is that I want Ashley to be wearing her look and not for the look to be wearing Ashley. With this change Bioware is trying to have Ashley own it, but I don't see it working. That ready for battle shot I saw with Ashley in the same getup and Liara in armor highlights this immensely.

Ashely doesn't need a "prettier" side, she's beautiful as she is. More feminine? We got the idea that she has that feminine side when she mentions the tin foil mini-skirt and thigh high boots. She also talks about going out dancing with her sisters if you talk to her at Flux.
This so-called "sex appeal" is of the high school "would-you-hit-that" mentality and unfortunately many have responded in exactly that manner. It's demeaning.
Everything about Ashley screams real person. I'm not saying that she is a real person, but I mean that I can absolutely guarantee that there are a few people exactly like her somewhere. Ashley is down-to-earth in more ways than one. That's why I like her.
And again somebody perfectly sums up what this is all about. Thank you, and hopefully people read and understand this.

Women in the service must cut their hair short or keep it tied back, and are hardly allowed to use cosmetics. Ashley answers to the council now, so she can wear her hair any way she likes and wear as much or as little make up as she wants.

No, the trimming is pretty definitely pinkXeranx wrote...
The funny thing about the so-called "pink" stripe is that it's supposed to be red. It's washed out in-game. Look at the box for Mass Effect and you'll see that it's red.

Compare the tone to the N7 patch and the age rating mark, which are actually red.
However, i believe the pink is there to mark the "healing" aspects of Phoenix armour, not "girly". But then of course, why was that particular armour selected for Ashley as her default gear is anyone's guess.

You and I both.
Sadly, it appears that Bioware has done everything they can to "forget" about ME1.

In my head-canon I've convinced myself that Phoenix armor is actually a utility suit developed by the Sirta Corporation and used by medical personnel. One guess as to which character gets that first set of Scorpion I armor you come across on Eden Prime in my playthroughs...
Of course, it doesn't help that Ash still ends up wearing Phoenix on Virmire and in ME2.

Quoted b/c this needs to be seen, read .... and then seen and read over and over again.
This is exactly what this whole argument is about. Her character.

I'm looking at my box and it appears to be red. Even the back of the box with the different helmet has red stripping.
In any case, I never thought anything about the color of Phoenix armor. White and red or white and pink makes no difference as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps she likes pink.
I put her in a different suit because even at its best (X) it doesn't offer adequate protection. Scorpion armor protects better. That bummed me out because I wanted to keep her in what I understood to be her signature look.

But anyway, look at Ash in the ME1 cover.
She looks sexualized there, just with her pose.
AND SHE'S WEARING FULL ARMOR.
I don't see why that can't be continued. She doesn't need to be slimmed down or wear lighter clothing.
There are other ways to make her more "feminine" if they so choose, and those ways don't have to be corny or stupid.
To be honest, I don't care that much about her new look. I like it. I just hope she can still look like the Ash I knew in ME1. Heavy armor, a ponytail, and big guns.
So I don't mind the new look. I'm just hoping we have more options with her.

Wrex is the only character who can really pull off the Phoenix armour look. Of course, he could probably carry off Ashley's new outfit too.
Honestly, the only character who doesn't look hilarious in Phoenix is Tali (girl deserves credit for that). Sadly, in my current playthrough she, as well as majority of crew, wears Colossus. And speaking of unlucky ones, Garrus in Phoenix with helmet toggled on is just hilarious.

A little too late to answer this, but I don't hate Ashley, I'm glas she's coming back in my playthrough.
But her look in ME1 never did her any justice, I'm glad she looks pretty now.
