So, why does Ashley look radically different?

Problem is, without the Spectre logo, I doubt I'd be able to associate her outfit with a uniform at all. Remove the Alliance symbol, and Anderson's still still clearly a military uniform. A C-Sec outfit is not something you'd mistake for something you'd go out dancing in.
That';s the thing about Ash's outfit. It keeps being called a "casual" outfit. But it's not casual. It's not a combat outfit. But it is still a formal uniform. Supposedly.. Ash was at Alliance headquarters, talking to a bunch of admirals in a formal setting. In that outfit.
Not
Casual
And to me the impression it gives falls somewhere in between "Can I get you some coffee, sir?" And "The music's starting, let's dance!"

You're right Ashley doesn't use her looks, she's uses the gun in her hand and her Rank as a Commander as well as her Specre status. You also seem to be forgetting that medium armor (The armor you find her in) is just as skin tight to her body, the same way all ME1 armor was with the only heavy parts being the shoulders and thigh plates.LPPrince wrote...
If Ashley told me she was a Spectre and I had to listen to her, I'd be more inclined to do it if she was wearing some heavy armor than a lighter, more skintight suit.
Ashley doesn't seem like the kind of women who'd use her looks to get what she'd want.
Now if Miranda was a Spectre, I could see her wearing something kind've like what Ashley's suit is.
But Ash? Nah. I suspect she'd rather wave a huge gun in your face or put a few rounds in your knees than shake her rump to an instrumental of The Thong Song.
Speaking of which, that last bit isn't a bad idea.
anyway the outfit is casual she hasn't been seen in a combat mission just in a cutscene before and after combat. she's getting N7 ish armor and when it's done it's done. I wonder if she and my femshep can match again like they used to when they were together.

Well honestly Bioware seems to be throwing out the old casuals. Hell Shepard gets an N7 hoodie. that's civilian clothing. In ME2 Shepard got a civilian casul (which was but ugly to be honest) and then the outfit from Kasumi's mission, a tuxedo for male shep and a party dress for female shepard. I guess when you hit commander you can wear what you want.iakus wrote...

Well Cerberus is a lot less formal than teh Alliance or COuncil (seriously, they let Miranda run around in that getup, how formal can it be?) Though I didn't like any of the noncombat options. Cerberus uniforms look like a Little League team and the colonist outfit looked like an attempt at a Jayne Cobb look. The tux was...less bad.
But as far as ME3 goes. I actually kinda hope for a hoodie/cargo pants look for Ash. I could take her more seriously in that. Because it really is a casual outfit. Maybe the I could pretend she got pulled in for an emergency session before she could change.

Or you could let a grown woman wear whatever the hell she wants because she's technically the same age as Shepard biologically, being revived at 29 and all. She's three years older, three years more mature and who knows what she's gone through during those three years. Also the same can be said about Miranda since she's 35. She wears what she wants. same with Kaidan. same with Jacob. and just about every single squadmate. Point is, everyone's outfit is tight in this game no ones wearing baggy clothing in the series at all. Ashley's outfit has pieces it's not full body like Miranda's was and still has armor which the t-shirt and carge pants lacked.iakus wrote...

It's not about how tight the outfit is
It's not about a lot of skin showing
It's not about "What Ash wants to wear'
It's about a uniform. Age doesn't factor into this. What she wants to wear doesn't factor into this. Professionalism does. A grown woman (or man) in a military organizaton doesn't get to decide what they want to wear ina formal setting. This is an outfit Ash is expected to wear. By the Alliance. By the Council. Thus the Spectre markings. It's an outfit she wears in front of generals, admirals, ambassadors, Council members. In a formal setting. It's supposed to convey her rank and prestige. She's a Council Spectre, an Alliance Commander. A person of rank and importance. a military and political bad****.
But the cut of her outfit, the color scheme, the design, simply do not match that. Att all. This is simply not a professional looking outfit. Without the Spectre logos, maybe it's a casual outfit. Something to walk in the park with, catch a game, go out drinking and dancing, or just relaxing on a ship. But meeting with admirals? The Council? No way. She's way underdressed for that. And I don't mean catsuit or boob window.

It's alliance , and Spectre, blue. It has the Spectre insigna on her torso and gloves. It's still not as tight as Vega's Tshirt where it might as well be painted on. It's a 3 piece (I'm guessing there's a shirt underneath the Jacket) suit and when women wears suits they wear heels or Wedgs and she's wearing wedges. It is NOT a body suit like Miranda wears, she's CLEARLY wearing a Jacket with padding on it inc ase something breaks out while she's in the formal setting so she's prepared. That is exactly up Ashley's alley in terms of being a soldier, being prepared for anything. she's ready for SOME combat in case somethign were to go down, like Cerberus busting into that building and trying to kill everyone. Shepard meets those Samer admirals in a T-Shirt and Cargo pants. If Ashley's under dressed Shepard is damn near naked in comparison, especially considering they get thrown into combat minutes after that.iakus wrote...

Firstly, she is not a real person who makes her own choices
Secondly, do you really think the new design is based in a desire for deep character development? I didn't think so.

Samara's outfit carries incredible signifigance to her people. She's is both feared and respected because her outfit is a traditional justicars outfit. Asari fashion is NOT human fashion. She's not actually real. She doesn't make decisions on what to wear herself. A design team of primarily straight males does that for her.

Vega and Shepard are in outright "casual" outfits. Shepard seems to be in some kind of protective custody and has no uniform to wear. I can believe he was brought in for some sort of emergency session. Ash, not so much.
Ash's V-neck makes it doubtful she's wearing a shirt under the jacket (no it doesn't show any cleavage, just saying it makes it doubtful there's a shirt underneath). The pants, don't get me started at how the color clashes with the rest. Her outfit is not a catsuit. But it is ugly and not professional looking. It doesn't convey authority

this, so much this. This is not Ashley out, clubbing. if this was Ashley out, clubbing, I personaly woudln't say a damn pip. but this is a uniform and Ashley is on duty. its possibly even what passes for her combat armor. and it has NOTHING to do with grown woman's choices and everything to do with blatant sexualization of the character, an attempt of giving her a " recognizable" look. which is ironic in an extreme as she's already being mistaken for Miranda.
and speaking of Miranda - her outfits sucks. just becasue they were in game doesn't make them ok. Miranda for all her amazing combat skills and group buff, stayed on a ship for me, until the release of second armor pack.

*rolls eyes* so YOU don't think the outfit is professional. Obviously the rest of the systems alliance disagrees with you. She's Captain of the Normandy, Anderson respects her, Vega respects her, and rightfully so, she's a damn Spectre. While you think it's "ugly" which is subjective to your sense of taste. It fits her perfectly in my eyes since we're being subjective here. It clearly shows she's got talent in combat as Spectre's are known to be so throughout the galaxy including the Terminus systems. Ashely eltting her hair down also tells me she's more comfortable with herself as she sates in ME1 hat she didn't think she was good enough for the things she fought for and as I stated before her casual outfit having some form of protection shows that she can be combat ready at the drop of a hat in case things go sour around her. It holds her weapon (it seems every piece fo clothing can hold a weapon on it's back really since Shepard's shirt does the same.) so she's got it made in one outfit and it's not even her armor. From what I've seen the Jacket's everyone talks about being "formal" are reserved for captain/Major's and above since Shepard wears the same casual as Ashley and Kaidan in Me1 at the rank of Commander and the peopel you see wearing them in ME3 outrank Ashley and Shepard. The one's who don't have muscle shirts showing off their athletic torsos and six packs as well as their hulk hogan-ish arms.iakus wrote...

You keep bringing up being more "Mature", being ready for combat, and vega's casual outfit.
1. Mature? That outfit doesn't look mature or professional in the slightest... looks like she's going clubbing or standing on the street corner.
2. Ready for combat? In wedges? Riiiiight. She'd have to concentrate way too much when she's running, ducking, and generally keeping her balance while fighting to really be able to fight.
3. Vega's outfit? Thing is... it's actually the kind of the military personnel wear when not on duty for their "casual" oufit. I'd take her much more seriously if she was wearing a spectre version of his casual outfit. A tight faction colored t-shirt, cargo pants, and combat boots is "right up Ashley's alley" in something that she'd wear. That and it doesn't look unprofessional unlike that suit she has on now.

I'd wager all of the male's "casual" outfits will look similar to that of Vega's outfit. They won't have a version like Ashley's b/c they already have a version of it... we've seen it already... THEIR ARMOR.

The one's who don't have muscle shirts showing off their athletic torsos and six packs as well as their hulk hogan-ish arms.
Udina: This is an outrage! *strikes a pose*
Nope, I don;t think it's professional looking at all. And I'd place my own opinion a bit higher than that of the members of a fictional organization.
Anderson may respect her. Vega may respect her. But that's because the script demands they do. She could show up in Alliance Headquarters in a chainmail bikini and Anderson will respect her if he's written that way. It doesn't mean it makes sense to the player though.
The "protection" on Ash';s outfit make me (like others) suspicious that this was originally meant to be Ash's ME2-style set look, with no difference between armored and casual look at all. At least, not before the (righteous) anger caused a reconsideration.
I have no problem with her hair, as long as it stays out of her face in combat.
Her jacket, combined with the pants, provides some interesting upkilt shots as we've seen. It really provides the illusion of a miniskirt.
You know what would fit her better? Alliance Dress Blues. WIth a Spectre logo or three added. I mean, look at that outfit. Then look at Ash. Can you honestly tell me Ash looks more like a professional soldier in the outfit she was given?
Her new outfit tells me her being a Spectre, or an Alliance Commander is less important than the fact that she's female. Her new outfit is all style and no substance.

this, so much this.
Hmm, maybe someone should tweet that to a Dev:
@CaseyDHudson Was Ash out clubbing just before the start of ME3?
