So, why does Ashley look radically different?

Pretty sure doesn't cut it spiros. ...I didn't mean for that to sound rude.

What I am trying to say it, bioware doesn't exactly have a clean record right now. Things are changing from them, and if they don't lie about features, they don't exactly tell the whole truth either.

I can understand being tight lipped about story features, but would it really be bad to have one quality photo of ashley in game with armor and her hair up? I would rather get all in the air and over with. Biowares marketing has been giving me a headache latley.

I guess, but there's been a few concept's with her hair still in a bun, which relates to my perspective. And for me, her hair doesn't change who she is for me. The only thing that can change my outlook on her is from what I see in game, personality, attitude, etc. Like really, it's hair. I know a few girls who tend to rock out a more punk look, but can still look classy and formal when appropriate and it doesn't change who they are. Though, I think I tend to be more positive than some people on these forums, but I get where some people are coming from, I just don't agree.

Do those girls who rock the punk look go into combat on a regular basis? Actually let me rephrase that, did those women who rock punk ever have a military history and still rock the punk look before going into combat?

Sure its hair. However I come from a militry family. Its not that ashley has pretty hair, its ashley has pretty hair and doesnt care she cant see people when she is shooting. Hell an early pic had her shooting with her left eye completely covered by her hair when she was shooting.

It hurts my immersion, and one of the reasons I liked her to begin with was her military background and how it shaped her (good and bad). But apparently looking sexy for shep overrules being a solder (or so it looks with the marketing we have had so far), which also makes me annoyed. It seems to go against her character, and if it isn't going against her character I don't like what she has become.

If everything goes great with ashley good, i'll be happy to be wrong.

As long as she doesn't become a sex object, I'll be ok.

In regards to Ashley I don't consider Horizon a screw up. She never seemed the type to want to hold her toungue on an issue so she reacted like I expected her to. I've had no reason to doubt that Ashley isn't the same as before, which is why I don't believe a change in appearance means much. Judging her without any kind of meaningful evidence to back it up is pointless.

At least her dialogue wasn't a hand-me-down from Kaidan. Either way, there was a lot left unsaid, and for no discernible reason but to put the VS in limbo. My point is that these characters were forcibly bent to serve the new whims of the writers, disregardful of character integrity and realism. It's been done before, and if Ashley's new appearance is any indicator, it's been done again.

The precedent is there.

As for lack of "meaningful evidence", that's your call to make. The way I see it, this character- a rare breed that rose above being yet another cheap fix of video game TNA and sexist comic book aesthetics- is being subjected to a male fantasy makeover. As a warning of character violations to come, this is as blatant as it gets.

You could argue that since the Reapers attacked Earth and the trial is underway, that everyone is going off instict and that their main focus is to make sure everyone is safe, while not having the time and mindset to think of their look, or what it's limiting, combat wise, but I understand your point. Also, there's the whole technological limitation and the ability to make the hair actually act like hair and not just stay in one place, so that might be why she isn't trying to move it out her eyes or something. Also, that's why during the Earth demo, you still see Shepard in his "casual" uniform and Ashley with her hair down, surprised and time issue. This is all just assumption anyway, but I'm sure most people will be happy if we see her with her hair up after Earth, right?

She changed her clothes and her hair grew because time passed, I don't understand how that constitutes as someone looking "drastically different."

So wait a minute. Sorry, but I'm still stuck on that "Ashley's a Spectre" bombshell I just learned about.

Has Bioware given any explanation as to why the hell A/K randomly got Spectre status? That makes no sense to me. It's like in Dragonball Z when the "legendary super saiyan" was suddenly attainable by children.

Nothing beyond the fact that they are Spectres now.  But given they were essentially Shepard's sidekicks during the events of ME1,, and the VS became Anderson's protege for the two years after ME1, ti kinda makes sense that they were groomed to be "the second human Spectre"

Randomly? They did pretty damn well in ME1, and were considered valuable enough to the Systems Alliance to be sent on covert operations in deep space by themselves.  Furthermore, with far more human influence on the Council - regardless of your choices, this occurs - more humans will be admitted as time goes on.

So... because they earned it and because people in power want them to.

Right.  Children.

Children are the reason we are having characters pooped on by BW...screw backstory, and all of that "complicated" stuff, we gotta bring in the masses! You know what brings in the masses? Skimpy-dressed women! Wait? That wasn't her character? DO IT ANYWAY! MAKE THE CONCLUSION THE ENTRY POINT!

I thought you were joking when you typed that! I can't believe you were genuinely suprised. I wouldn't go that far though, Ashley or Kaidan becoming Spectres is definitely more believable than Goten going Super Saiyan at age 7.

Why would they give an explanation at this time? The game isn't even out yet. That said, the reason for their Spectre-ness better be explained in ME3's story at some point.

"Unless that speed lets them outrun bullets, I’m more inclined to stick with nice solid armor and a big gun."
 - Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams

Hey, Bioware, that's a direct quote from that game YOU created not too long ago..oh...what was it...the first Mass Effect?

What happened to Ashley? Please, go read that quote, write it down, and post little sticky notes with it all over your office.

She does have armor now, praise the Enkindlers.  The outfits on the left.  Now if only something can be done about that "uniform":

Firstly, the "children" part was specifically referring to DBZ. I didn't mean to imply that A/K are children (though Kaiden, eh.... lol).

Secondly, both have major baggage that would make them fall lower on the list than other Spectre candidates, should another human be picked already (granted, this is, what, three years after Shepard's induction, and he's been "dead" and with Cerberus?). Ashley said herself that her family history has kept her from getting promotions; don't you think the top humanity brass would want to avoid that to impress, say, the Turians? She went from a non-commissioned officer to a Spectre in three years due to being Shepard's buddy? It's just... it's stretching it for me. And I even like Ashley. I was hoping she'd have grown into her own and not been attached to the hip of Shepard, much in the way Liara and Tali had. But a Spectre? I just... I don't see it.

As for Kaiden, I've never liked Kaiden. Maybe I'm biased there. But being an L2 with medical defficiencies as a result would, IMO, also bar him from such a limited position. Plus, regarding the Council's stance toward Shepard after he was found to be working with Cerberus, wouldn't they take his example as a bad one for their new human Spectres to follow?

Maybe I'm being too picky. I just feel like the Spectre status being given to them is just a way for Bioware to make them question Shepard's authority and create drama. That's not a good enough reason for me. I'm hoping it's properly explained in the beginning of ME3, rather than, "Oh hey, Shep. Check it out! I'm a Spectre too!" :?

Eh, there are background combinations for Shepard that make his/her selection equally questionable.  But they still get the job.

In any case if Ashley survives the events of ME1 I'd say she's overshadowed her family name by being "the other human" on the team, and considering Shepard is "dead" she would remain humanity's symbol of that triumph. Same with Kaidan.

In any case, if I whine about her armor it will be after I see it.

Well I can kind of see the reasoning for ashley not being a spectre, it would be embarrassing for the woman who's ancestor surrendered to the very races she would be completely accountable to end up working for them.
