Hello there, wall of text!
Reno Surana is friendly, inquisitive and trusting to the point of naive. She’s very pro-Circle and believes duty is important. When her magic surfaced at a very young age, it wasn't long before the templars came to the Denerim Alienage take Reno to the Circle. There, she threw herself into her studies to overcome homesickness, and grew to believe she was lucky to have been taken to the tower, instead of living in poverty. Despite her support of the Circle, she has always been horrified by the Rite of Tranquility and how it robs people of their self, which is why she defies Irving to help Jowan escape.
After Ostagar, she initially resents Alistair for forcing her into the leadership role when he is much more experienced and she is new to the outside world. It is only as she gets to know him more that she begins to befriend him and see him as the sibling she never had. When Reno first meets Zevran, she is initially interested in getting to know him because he is a fellow elf. They quickly develop a casual sexual relationship (which she is familiar with from the Circle), and as Zevran helps her to understand the wider world and the dangers of trusting too easily, they develop a strong friendship. Reno is fascinated by elven history, and takes the opportunity while with the Dalish to learn all she can from them. She is eager to learn about unusual magic, so that she can bring this information to the Circle for mages to study (such as AW, shapeshifting and keeper abilties). Despite her differences with Morrigan, Reno attempts to bridge the gap between them so that she can learn more about Morrigan's shapeshifting, and she eventually grows to respect her. She has a good relationship with all of her companions, and sees Wynne as a grandmother figure. Reno encourages Leliana to take a more cynical/hard view of things, as she herself has started to do, and embrace life away from the Chantry.
When she goes to the Circle tower, Reno is reluctant to help Greagoir. Though she still believes in the function the templars perform as guards and enforcers, she doesn’t think that all the mages would fall so easily to blood magic. In particular, she wants to find Irving, so she enters the tower with the intention of stopping the blood mages infesting her home, and rescuing her old mentor. In the end, the mages are spared Annulment, and Reno starts to wonder at how little the Chantry trusts the mages. Though she still believes in the Circle, she begins to mistrust the Chantry and its intention towards mages, as well as believing the templars are misguided and hobbled by the Chantry. Her encounters with more extreme templars (particularly Rylock) serve to strengthen her convictions that the Chantry’s fears are holding the mages back from doing the good they are capable of.
When Morrigan offers her ritual, Reno is conflicted. Although she’s grown to like and understand Morrigan, she knows the apostate seems to have no conscience at all, and Reno fears giving her the power of an Old God. She also believes it goes against her duty as a Grey Warden and a mage to take part in the ritual, but she is too afraid to die, and doesn't want Alistair to either. So she convinces him to go through with the ritual to save them both.
During the events of Awakening, Reno recruits all the Wardens she can and rebuilds the Keep, the guilt of accepting Morrigan's ritual hanging over her. She saves Amaranthine and destroys the Architect, deciding that she will do her duty no matter how appealing or simple the alternative might seem.
...
Urthemiel Hawke loves her magic. Though she understands its dangers on a basic level, she believes it’s up to the individual mage to control their ability and that the Chantry and templars are completely unnecessary. Unlike her more nervous sister, Urthemiel learns to cope with the anxiety of being an apostate by emotionally distancing herself from events, and mocking people's worries. Her flippant approach and casual disregard to the danger they were all in helped lead to her rivalry with Carver (it didn’t help that she was always teasing him!).
Urthemiel is more than happy to help mages fleeing the Circle. She sees it almost like a game, and revels in the opportunity to defy the Chantry. The fact that some templars are more sympathetic towards mages surprises her, but she knows that if they will still jump when the Chantry tells them do, even if some do feel bad for doing it. She doesn’t understand the Qunari mindset at all, especially because she prizes freedom and individuality. Though she is prepared to work with them for the money and the political pull it gives her with the Viscount, she despises them. Her involvement in politics meanwhile mostly comes from valuing the protection political ties can offer her from the Chantry, as well as a general desire to watch events unfold.
She and Anders bond quickly over their shared desire to help mages, though their reasons aren’t entirely the same. Urthemiel finds his tirades about mage rights tiresome, but his situation with Justice intriguing. She ends up accepting the spirit as much as she does Anders, because she never knew Anders before the merger, and therefore doesn’t know how much of what she loves about him is a result of being changed by the spirit. After Carver almost dies and joins the Wardens, Urthemiel realises that she squandered her opportunity to understand her brother and makes an attempt whenever she sees him again to be friendly and supportive. Most of the companions she gets along with well, except for Sebastian, who she constantly encourages to leave the Chantry, and Fenris (for obvious reasons). Regardless, all companions have her support in return for theirs.
A dislike for Kirkwall itself grows during her years as a noble, as she witnesses people – mages, templars and others – out of control. She grows more apathetic about people’s troubles, and makes no real effort to look into the murders, until her mother is taken. Afterwards, her hatred for Meredith and the Chantry itself intensifies because she sees the templars oppressing and persecuting innocent mages whilst lunatics like Quentin walk around unrestrained. The only reason she ends up stepping in during the Qunari takeover is because she hopes the Viscount might do something about Meredith and the templars in return for her help. The reward of Champion she finds amusing. Afterwards, she reluctantly remains in Kirkwall, partly because Anders won’t leave and partly because she wants revenge on Meredith for allowing Quentin to murder her mother.
Naturally, when the time comes, she sides with the mages, though she is more interested in openly fighting templars than saving the Circle. Anders’ attack on the Chantry shocks her, but she is more frustrated that he used her and kept his plans a secret. Once Meredith is finally dead, there is nothing else tying Urthemiel to Kirkwall, and she is free to leave.
