I'm sorry, but I have to ask: is this in any way related to real life?

By that I mean do you feel that way about "mixed families" in real life.

I was talking about Mass Effect, though I question the health of mixed families in real-life too considering the downsides faced by mixed societies.

What backwater nation of primitives do you live in where this is a common occurence? 1900's USA?

Or is modern USA still like this? (this does not occur with any significant frequency in Canada).

Not outwardly, but yes. Suburbs and cities alike are kind of segregated due to status and economy, and many parents teach their children-- whether they mean to or not-- that their race is the race they should like. Mixed kids have it surprisingly hard, since they're torn between different races and thus different cultures.

My friend at work was made fun of when she was a child because her mommy was black and her daddy was white. I think it's always kind of been a sore spot for her.

Plus my family (bible belt) sadly still believes whites should stay with whites, etc. I don't believe this, but I know my dad, his dad, etc. all do. It still occurs.

I've always thought people over stated this. I live in the agricultural area of CA and about half the population is Mexican the other half is predominantly white. There are definitely separate neighborhoods and stuff in my town but there's really no racism. People even tend to treat the people outside of their race extra well to dispel any initial distrust.

I am disgusted that you would insinuate that the fine people on this thread are racist. You conveniently left out that plenty of the fine folks on this thread are xenomancers, so how can we be racist?  There isn't enough evidence here to convict us of racism in a polically motivated migrant fleet trial. I'll stop hating batarians when you show me one who isn't a terrorist.

Totally depends on where you are. I moved from southern Ohio to Oregon, and the attitudes are way different. There's no outward racism in Ohio, but there are barriers and distrust. Inner cities are virtually all minorities and have lousy conditions, while the high quality suburbs are all white. The white kids grow up thinking racism is in the past, but that's easy to think when their school is 98% white as it is.

This is nothing like pre-60's, but there are racial and culutural barriers still, sadly. Specifically in the Bible Belt of America.

I have to admit, I read it that way too the first time.  Being the product of a mixed family, and having children of very mixed descent, I find that people are more curious these days than hateful, though back in my youth it was a problem, and once again when my wife and I were dating we had a handful of hateful experiences.

Their teeth seem really weird when they have a primate/human figure. If 'polite krogan' had been a Batarian I would wuv him all the same. So no space racist here.

That's like saying a white guy can't be racist against blacks because he dates asian women.

That would certainly fit the description of a lot of G.Is stationed in Japan right after the end of WW2.

All I'm saying is that all the Batarians should stop using human racism as an excuse for terrorism so that they can better themselves.

They can't let it go. The council gave humans the right to colonize the Skyllian Verge, which was an area that the Batarians wanted to develop, and rather than actually stay on as a Council species they simply ragequit and started blaming humans for all their problems. The Batarian Hegemony is just filled w/ a bunch of jackasses, not that it'll matter anymore since the Reapers entered the galaxy w/in Batarian Space so now it's all academic.

The United states practices slavery everyday. It's just given a nice and somewhat misleading name. Work.

That's not slavery. You get paid and a lot of people get other generous benefits. In fact if you don't want to work the government will even pay you enough to survive on, at least for a while.

It's called wage slavery. Ask all the people who work full time for less than minimum wage if they feel like slaves or not. But anyway, this isn't the the right thread for this type of discussion.

The Hegemony is only a symptom of the disease, though.  Like any other dictatorship, they are in power either because most Batarians approve of their support of terror, or because they are too lazy to overthrow them.

Maybe, but like I said, the population is about 50/50. Even if there are clear separate areas of town there's going to be plenty of both groups everywhere.

Yeah, that's not really how these things work.  Trying to reduce the persistance of autocratic states to things like "they're all just lazy" is more than a little silly.

That's true, but in ME3 it won't matter anymore. if the whole Reaper thing is resolved, humans won't have to worry about going to wat w/ the Batarians. So now the greatest threat in the galaxy besides the Reapers are the Canadians (inside joke).
