Hi there good people,

I was thinking if I should post this topic or not for quite some time but I have reached consensus.

I am experiencing lag problems in many of my games including Dragon age II (minor but still).
For example in my Mass effect 2, lags are appearing very often ruining my gameplay.
But here is the thing I want to play all my games on maximum setting with no lags and without problems with graphic if that is possible. I recently updated my computer and thought that everything is going to be ok. But it isnt.
You see I dont know much about computers( I would blame that on being girl and a blonde for that matter but I dont want to insult anybody). So I asked my friend for help who happens to be in the computer bussines and I ended up with these specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit.
Processor: 3.33GHz.
RAM: 4GB (3,49 GB for use)
Intel® Core™ i5 CPU
Gtx 580.
So I have a few questions:
1. Do you think these specs are bad enough to cause these lags?
2. Is it possible that big screen could affect my framerate and cause lags?
3. Can you please recommend some updates or something to boost my system?
4. Do you think adding another Gtx580 or gtx590 would solve this issue?

Thank you so much for reading and thank you in forward for your advice or help.
Again please spare me and yourselves replies such as you are so stupid etc. (I would like to point out that I know what gtx stands for and that is it for me lol)

I also downloaded the latest driver for my gtx but it seems that the graphics and lags are even worse. There is that option in DAII settings dont know the name but it is supposed to help distant objects appear better or something and when I enabled it my game went completely to black screen mode.

So if there are any computer nerds (no offense I like nerds-immediately Chuck comes to my mind) who can help me I would aprreciate it. Thanks.

The GTX 580 is an excellent graphics card. Your problem is elsewhere. See the Troubleshooting hints, and run a Clean Boot Test:

You gave us no reason to suspect that it might be, but a GTX 580 ought not be phased by any kind of display, really.

Why did you think of that, and if you were suspicious of it, I didn't see details included here about it so far.

Getting more RAM is the best upgrade you can do for performance here. Unfortunately, the 32-bit version of Windows 7 will only use about 3.5GB worth. To use more you need Windows 7 64-bit. Other than that, the processor and gfx card should be just fine. Check to see what kind of programs you are running in the background, sometimes you might have a program that's a resource hog that is set to begin running at start up.

I also use a free program called ccleaner to clean up my registry some, and get rid of a lot of extra crap that gets left on the PC from surfing the web.

Oh finally. You have my eternal gratitude.I was begining to lose hope. Thank you.
But I heard some games have problem with 64-bit Windows 7 is that true?
My big computer screen cant cause these lags? I mean should i switch to smaller one?
And I know that this is a silly question (then again I am a silly girl in terms of computer maitance) but where can I check programs running in the backround?
Thanks

Hello lost25252

In response to your question about 64 bit Windows 7 - I am running this, 64 bit Windows 7 and I am not having problems with running games.

This is my system:

CPU: Intel i7-950 @ 4.2GHz with HyperThreading disabled.
Memory: 6GB
Video: 2 x GTX570 SLI 1.25 GB @800 MHz wit the 285.62 driver
Display: Asus VG236H 1920x1080@120Hz

I have a couple of questions for you:

1. What do you mean by a "big computer screen"?

What is the resolution of your display? The answer should be the resolution in the form a the width in pixels by the height in pixels, like 1920x1080. It is the number of pixels that determines how much work your graphics card must do. There is no difference in the processing required for a 17" 1920x1080 vs a 24" 1920x1080 vs a 55" 1920x1080 display. The only difference is the size of each pixel on the display.

I have a 1920x1080 display. I am using 2 GTX570s in SLI mode, with DX11. DX11 is a real consumer of graphics card resources in DA2, that is DX11 is a real Pig!. My display has a 120Hz refresh rate. I run with VSync enabled. I get a framerate (FPS) of between 70 and 100. The GPU usage is consistently over 90% for both GTX570s. Have you installed MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision? These applications will allow your to display FPS, GPU core and memory usage onscreen.

2. What is the model Number of your CPU?

I have an i7-950 overclocked to 4.2 MHz. You did not say what type of i5 CPU you have. Does your i5 have 2 or 4 cores? DA2 is not an extremely CPU intensive game. I don't recall my CPU usage exceeding 50% very often. If you have a Quad core i5, I doubt that you are CPU constrained.

The programs running in the background may be seen in the Windows Task Manager. You may need to click on the "show processes from all users" button in the Process window.

Depending on your display resolution and in game graphics settings, then yes you could be pushing your one GTX580 very hard. I know that I push my GTX570s very hard. I have had to reduce the Anti-Aliasing to get a good frame rate.

Hope this helps.
