My NPCs get turned to enemies (red circle) and won't change back?

This has happened four times now on three seperate occasions.  The first time was in the Firkraag's dungeon, when on NPC suddenly stopped moving and had a red circle around her as if she was an enemy.  She did not attack any of my other characters, but merely stood there.  My other characters tried to attack her, so I turned off AI and rested a few times.  It allowed me to rest, but she did not change back to green.  I could never get her to come back under my control and tried to force the issue with the ctrl q cheat.  That didn't work either.  In the end, I just loaded the game and did the battle over.  I was fighting hobgoblins, if that's important.

This happened again in Sendai's Enclave while I was fighting umber hulks, spiders, and drow. This time two NPCs were affected.  They also wouldn't turn back and I had to load the game.  This time it was particularly frustrating since I had fought and won a long and difficult battle only to have that happen.  I tried killing the NPCs, thinking that if I could resurrect them the effect would go away. One of them exploded into chunks when I killed her and the other exploded randomly when I cast the resurrection spell.

This same problem also happened in the illithid city and that time also involved umber hulks.  Again, the only way to fix it was to load the game and do the battle over.  This problem seems to happen when I have characters fighting complex battles in multiple places, so that I cannot see all my characters on the screen at once.  The characters that get this enemy status have always been characters that are outside my line of sight, so I don't realize its happened until after the battle has ended (i.e. I'm paying attention to my PC fighting on the front line, so I'm temporarily ignoring my NPCs fighting moderately weak opponents in the next room) .

Has anyone else had this problem?  What can I do to fix it?

Thanks!

I have never had this problem but I never use the AI.
If enemy spellcasters charm or control an NPC, then you will get the red circle. I keep plenty of Dispel Magic spells handy for these sorts of problems. It may just be a bug in the AI...

Is your game patched - not aware of this being a specific bug but worth checking. GOG comes pre-patched, the rest don't.

I downloaded my game through GOG, so I guess that means its patched.  I haven't downloaded any additional patches or mods.

I tried casting dispel.  I also tried to put illithid collars on them and use the ctrl q cheat, but none of that worked.  When I clicked on their information screens there didn't show up as being any spells cast on them that would account for this, just the bonuses they were supposed to be receiving from the armor and other items they were using.

It let me rest in spite of their being enemies, which would normally remove the effects of spells, but no matter how many times I rested, this effect wouldn't go away.

Mentions no mods earlier.

I can remember this sort of behaviour from created non-protaganists after being petrified. Are these the in-game NPC's like Jaheira, Viconia, Aerie, Nalia, Imoen, Mazzy or are you using multiplayer to create a party of your own creation?

If you can rest you should be able to save too. Save to a new slot and see if the problem remains when you reload.

In single player mode I would then try booting them from the party and seeing if they can re-join but if they remain hostile you won't get that chance.

In multiplayer I'd try an export/import (it's been a while, think these are the options).

I would also check if your debug mode is enabled correctly, can you kill anything with ctrl y for example. If not, have you installed to the default program files folder - you'd need to edit another file as below.

Or make a savegame and have a look at it using www.mud-master.com/shadowkeeper/

I don't have any mods.  This has been happening in single player mode and the game does not let me save it because it regards the NPCs as enemies.

I never thought of kicking them out of the party while they're like that.  I'll try that next time this happens.

There have been several characters affected by this problem so far.  It happened to Imoen and Sarevok and also to some characters I had made join my party with the ctrl q cheat.  I first I thought it might just be something to do with that cheat, but then it happened to Sarevok after I booted out the ctrl qed characters.

Cheats are definitly enabled, if that's what you mean by "debug mode."  I got bored with the normal NPCs so added Phaere and Priss to my party for a while in addition to my PC, Viconia, Imoen, and Sarevok.  So far the only characters in my party not affected by this weird red circle thing are my PC, Viconia, and Priss.  It tends to happen to characters who are engaged in combat off screen though, and since Viconia and my PC are generally the primary focus of my attention in battles, that may have something to do with why it hasn't happened to them.

That may be the cause of it for all I know. There are 19 official NPCs, their details are found in a save game file.

Official Bioware NPCs are: Aerie, Anomen, Branwen, Cernd, Edwin, Haer'Dalis, Imoen 1, Imoen 2, Jahiera, Jan Jansen, Keldorn Firecam, Korgan, Mazzy, Minsc, Nalia, Valygar, Viconia, Xan, Yoshimo
Imoen 1 = Imoen, at the start of the game.
Imoen 2 = Imoen, at Spellhold.
Branwen and Xan are found only in the Tutorial.
NPC records are found in the Baldur.gam file in each save game folder.
