SQUADMATES
Your teammates start with one Squad point and gain 2 per level through level 5, when they have 9. They then gain every other level through 28, when they have 27. At 29 and 30, they gain 1 each, for a total of 30.
Jacob and Miranda get a total of 31 points. They also get six weeks of vacation and monogrammed bath robes.
There's a good table here:
http://www.gamebansh...cementtable.php

Popular Builds
Much, but not all, of this is drawn from this useful thread of
Favorite Squadmate Builds
I've noted where there is wide agreement, no consensus, or my own opinion. I tend to put Incendiary or Cryo Squad Ammo on Shepard if available as a primary power, and if not, I make Squad Ammo a priority on Squadmates.
As a general rule, most players max Squadmate passive powers early, but for exceptions, see Tali, Mordin, Kasumi, and Samara.
Sabresandiego gave excellent advice when noting that Area Overload, Pull Field, and Unstable Warp are great on any chr.

JACOB
Pull —  4 (or 1 if  you needing his ammo power or use him for CQC) 1st unless doing Ammo
Incendiary Ammo — 0, 1 (if getting my own Squad ammo late), or 4
Cerberus Operative — 4 (widely done. Usually Specialist, could do Veteran if need HP)
Barrier (Loyalty Power) -- 0, 1, or 4 for CQC and if not building his Inceniary Ammo

MIRANDA
Overload — 4 Area (wide agrement) 3rd
Warp — 4 Unstable (wide agreement) 2nd
Cerberus Officer — 4  Leader - 1st, with a point in Warp, possibly 1 in Overload
Slam (loyalty power) — 1 (rarely increased)
Winning build, perhaps the easiest of all the Squadmates, and she's great on any mission.
For Squaddies, Unstable Warp is the way to go, over Heavy Warp. Unstable cooldown drops to 9s from 12s, and then matches the 9s cooldown for Pull, making it easier to coordinate combos.

ARCHANGEL
Concussive Shot — 2 to 4, 2nd (if 4, go with Heavy, because he gets a multiplier)
Overload — 4 Area,  1st
Turian Rebel — 3 or 4 Renegade?
Armor Piercing Ammo (loyal) — 0 to 4 ( 0 if Soldier, possibly otherwise. Wide disagreement)
This is one squad ammo I avoid.

MORDIN
Incinerate — 4 Area 1st
Cyro Blast — 0 to 4 Area (good, but if Shepard has Squad Cryo, some prefer Neural Shock)
Salarian Scientist — 3 (rarely done to 4)
Neural Shock (loyal) — 2 to 4 Area (many prefer this to Cryo)
I prefer Cryo to Neural Shock. Cryo has a (small) AoE even at early levels and it affects all targets. Neural Shock does offer an accuracy impairment (at level 2+) and it lasts twice as long, but it takes twice as long to recharge, and it affects only organics.

GRUNT
Concussive shot — 2 to  4 (Area. Dmg is low for Heavy).
Incendiary Ammo — 0 to 4 (depending on your Shepard ammo) 1st if needing squad ammo
Krogan Berserker — 4 Warlord for dmg (some do Pureblood for tank). 1st, if not ammo
Fortification (loyal) — 2 to 4 Heavy. Widely done to 4.
Grunt's Fortification is strongest when Heavy, but he auto-uses it, so consider Improved to minimize cooldown interruptions if you rely on his Concussive Shot. I don't.

JACK
Shockwave — 2 or 4 Improved (usually 4 on Veteran and below, 2 on Hardcore/Insanity)
Pull — 2 to 4 Field - also good vs husks, if going w. Warp Ammo and saving on Shockwave
Subject Zero — 4 Adept
Warp ammo (loyal) — 2 to 4 Squad (4 on Hardcore/Insanity, and often below, too)
Though Shockwave gets a bad rap on Hardcore/Insanity, it can still be used, and it's a fun power when applicable. But Warp Ammo shows its benefits more readily then, and there's no doubt that Shockwave shines on the easier difficulties.

THANE
Throw — 3 or 4 Field
Warp — 3 or 4 Unstable (I'd go with 4 here, 3 in Throw)
Drell Assassin — 4 Marksman. Huge bonus.
Shredder Ammo (loyal) — 2 (respec them out to max the others)
Respecs are available through LotSB, so if you do that late (as I do) or not at all, you won't have a chance to respec, without a mod.

SAMARA (same for Mornith, using Dominate)
Throw — 2 to 4 (some love 4 Area here for anti-Husk, I find Pull Field more widely useful)
Pull — 4 Field (some stop at 2 to focus on Throw)
Asari Justicar — 3 to 4 Sapiens (3 if maxing Pull or Throw)
Reave (loyal) — 4 Area (everyone does this) 1st, as soon as available
Her Area Reave is great on the Reaper IFF and against Husks, but less efficient elsewhere, with its 12-second cooldown.

TALI
Combat Drone —4 Attack (2 if used only as a decoy)
AI Hacking — 2 to 4 Heavy (This or Combat Drone. 2 may be enough. Don't take Area, as they target poorly)
Quarian Machinist — 3 to 4 Engineer
Energy Drain (loyal) — 1 or 4 Area (scales poorly, so little use in 2 or 3)
Tali's passive ability improves health, weapon damage, and power duration - all nice, but
she's not a damage machine, and extending duration of her powers isn't as helpful as it would be to, say, reduce recharge. On Veteran and below, I tend to put 3 in AI, 2 in Machinist,
and max the others.
It's certainly possible to favor AI Hacking over Combat Drone, if you like Rock-Em-Sock'Em Robots.

LEGION
AI Hacking — 0, 2, or 4 Heavy (not Area. I go with 2)
Combat Drone — 0 to 4 Attack
Geth Infiltrator — 4 Assassin
Geth Shield Boost (loyal) — 4 Improved

ZAEED
Concussive Shot — 2 to 4 (Area or Heavy. Not sure if his multiplier affects the low dmg here)
Disruptor Ammo — 0 or 4 Squad (if my Shepard is weak against shields. Great vs geth)
Mercennary Veteran — 4 Warlord, 1st if not doing Squad Ammo. Huge bonus.
Inferno Grenade (loyal) — 2 or 4 (2 if maxing Disruptor Ammo)
I prefer Inferno to Concussive. Area increase, small loss of damage, faster cooldown, so I do 2/4/4/3.

KASUMI
Shadow Strike — 4 Rapid 1st, unless building as anti-geth.
Overload — 0 to 4 Area (3 has a good sabotage effect) 2nd if needed, otherwise Flashbang
Master Thief — 4 Infiltrator (some even skip this to max the others)
Flashbang Grenade (loyal) — 2 to 4 Improved (4 if you don't need Overload)
Kasumi is the hardest build of the bunch. All her powers are great, and if you know you'll focus on one or two, go ahead and max her excellent passive power. But I love her Shadow Strike and Flashbang, and if I use her Overload against shields, too, then I skip her passive altogether. That is not a standard build, and I'm sure I deserve a good lecture.

LIARA
Singularity — 2 to 4 Heavy. Singularity starts w. a 20 sec recharge for her, vs 5 for Shepard
Warp — 2 to 4
Asari Scientist — 4 Controller
Stasis — 2 to 4 Enhanced (many prefer Deep, or just the 2 pts)
With Heavy Singularity and Asari Controller, Liara is the only squadmate that can self Warpbomb. But she has only 28 pts, so you can max only 2 skills. It's easy to experiment by saving right after car chase. I liked 4 Heavy/2/4 Controller/3, especially with my Vanguard, who loved a teammate with Singularity (Heavy Singularity in a group, Charge one, move to draw enemies through the Singularity during recharge of Charge).
Staggered Stasis attacks can lockdown an enemy while you reload and recharge between. For that approach, Enhanced (which reduces resistance) works better than Deep, though some players just want the extra time of Deep, and some find 2 plenty.
Thread on Liara Skills

WEAPONS
As a general rule, all the upgraded weapons are good improvements over the starter equivalent, and they all work. That dead Eclipse doesn't care if you got him with the Widow or farming equipment. That said, players do have strong preferences, so:

- Tempest SMG for Squadmates, Locust SMG for Shepard (with its greater accuracy)
- Carnifex Hand Cannon for Squadmates. Shepard can use it or the Phalanx for sights.
- Geth Shotgun for Squadmates, except for Grunt who gets the Claymore. I like the Eviscerator for Shepard, though on Hardcore and Insanity, many take the Claymore, and the Scimitar works for multi-shot, following area stuns.
- Incisor Sniper Rifle is popular for your freakishly accurate Squadmates, save the Widow for Legion. Viper for Shepard.
- Mattock Rifle is a winner for all. Geth Pulse Rifle is good anti-shield, and a fine specialized choice for Grunt, if you want to switch him between that and his Claymore, though I don't bother with that on Insanity.

Heavy Weapons see less agreement among players, and I'll admit that I've never found a groove for them. Either I can kill everything as quickly with standard weapons and powers, or using Heavy Weapons makes a fight so trivial that it feels like an exploit. Be particularly skeptical of my summary here, and use whatever you like best.

The Cain works for specialized use (I don't personally use it much, as it either makes fights trivial - as with the Thresher Maw - or I can't aim it well enough to be of use, like against the Reaper Larva, but you may have better aim, or luck, or both).
The Collector Particle Beam is great for sniping, but on higher difficulties, you really need to be able to fire it from cover (meaning, while standing. The Colossus is one good opportunity).
I don't personally like the Firestorm or Avalanche, but many players swear by them against Husks:
Gatsby using Avalanche on Collectors
Thisisme using Avalanche as a Vanguard by Charging, shooting at floor, then switching
The Missile Launcher has low damage for a heavy weapon, but it hones.
The Arc Projector and Grenade Launcher tend to be the general-use choices, both by players in general and by me. I lean toward the former for multi-targets at a distance or as anti-shield, and the Grenade Launcher for extra damage on single targets or to clear close groups.

USEFUL LINKS

Mass Effect Wiki
Great wiki, even better than the Dragon Age equivalent. Along with this Forum, the best resource for ME2.

Bonus Powers
Very helpful. Numotsbane updated it to list Stasis and Flash Grenade, but the other powers get more complete descriptions. For Flash Grenade, see Numotsbane's own Flash Delerium. For Stasis, it's worth a peek at my own 1-minute tactic videos on Stasis for Speed, but do post if you know a more in-depth look.
Also note that guides here tend to focus on Insanity, which isn't the only way to play, and you may find you get giggles  from Shockwave, for instance, on Normal.

Pacifen's Suicide Mission Guide

ME1 Carryover Decisions

Giant Bomb Walkthrough
Good, brief descriptions of each section.

Guide to Gibbed's Save Game Editor
Powerful tool that was never finished. I hesitated about posting this, since an editor can dull a game by making it easier than you intend, but if you're on this Forum, you're over 13, or found a way past Bioware's impenetrable gatekeeper. Do what you enjoy most.

Pacifen's List of Strategy Guides on the ME2 Forum
A great roundup, but note that some classes have more complete Guides than others. This excellent Adept guide
The Power of the Adept
and these three great Vanguard guides, for instance,
Adepting through Insanity
Sabresandiego's Ultimate Vanguard: Dominating Insanity
Gatsby's Charging instruction video
have no Sentinel equivalent that I've seen. The roundup list does include
Sentinel guides, but all seem to have been early efforts, without the
kind of in-depth strategy seen in those above. If you have others to recommend, please do post them!

Here are a few more good links from recent weeks, added here while the Editing function is playing random-formatting games.

GUIDES
Vanguard
Xassantex's recent Building a Vanguard thread has lots of great tips.
See Sinosleep's Introduction from 1:45 to 2:15 for a 30-second tutorial of the most essential charging tactics.

Also see page 5 for tips on using the Avalanche, and page 8 for Mi-Chan's video on Grunt's Loyalty Mission, often challenging for Vanguards with its many un-chargeable targets.

Sentinel
I'm glad to add Ryoldschool's new Sentinel thread, since many of the early Sentinel guides were unfinished. Check out his tactics with Assault Armor, and on page 1, also see Xariann's second and third posts, with video guides on build variations.
