At the start of the Dwarf Commoner origin I try to open the first chest and nothing happens.

Some objects in the game have pathing issues if you click them from far away. Have you tried to stand really close to the chest?

Sometimes you have to approach a chest from another side. A few chests face the wrong way. This could be one of them.
