With a new character? Just play as an arcane warrior and call it a day.
You can be durable as a tank, fulfill the missing healer slot in the party (the runic golem sucks), and have access to the various means of crowd control.
If you were to import from Awakening, you could be dual wielding Vigilance+Voice of Velvet and with equipment+sustainables, have 100% evasion rate. The harvester would be diving head-first into the lava just to get away from the beating.

Trying doing it as a AW with little success months ago. Was able to do witch hunt without needing a pre-existing char.

First of all, the achievement unlocks if you complete it on Hard or Nightmare, so if you're just looting, go Hard.
Second, I recommend a quick whizz through Awakenings just so you can level your character up 5-6 levels (and even then you're 1-2 levels below a character that's been through Origins too). This is the hardest fight in the whole DA(1) series and it doesn't help that your companions are utter, utter trash. It truly amazes me that anyone can get through it with a character around level 20. Don't forget to pick up a shedload of health poultices and the Manual of Focus from Herren at Vigil's Keep so you can respec either of the awful dwarves. I recommend Brogan - make him a warrior archer (the most overpowered build from Awakenings onward - just pile up Dexterity, give him the Spirit Warrior, the new Awakenings Archery tree for Accuracy, Berserk and a tasty bow and he'll be a machine). Also, a few tasty equipment presents for the dwarves would be good.
I think the best builds for you personally to face the harvester are Arcane Warrior, pretty much any mage (with Healing magic) or, as menioned above, the Spirit Warrior archer.
The harvester is slower than you so you can always outrun him. Kiting is a perfectly viable (if ignoble) option here.
Have the Golem stay by the fade switch, along with someone to guard him. His job is to hit the switch and heal. If he does any damage at all, it's nice but not a priority. In the first phase, whenever you hit the switch whatever skeletons have appeared will die. Use sparingly. It is possible, though tricky, to time a fade switch just as the first phase Harvester is about to die, thus ensuring no skeletons for the second phase, which is obviously a massive bonus. Hard to do, but sooo worth it if you can.
All but one of the Harvester's attacks are avoidable for a melee character simply by side-stepping and running round behind him. Whoever you have going toe-to-toe with him should be doing this where possible.
The second phase is actually easier than the first - if you get through to it with all your characters still alive then you're onto a winner. As soon as it starts, clear out the skeletons first. The Harvester will be a doddle after that.
