I think Origins is trying to phrase out PC gaming since its not really affecting console gamers. Its too easy to pirate games on PC and EA is trying to prevent people from doing that exact thing. Heck if i remember right EA was/did try to make used games obsolete/pointless to get, making it worth your time to buy the games new.

They still do that.

DarthSliver wrote...
But overall this is a measure to prevent Pirating games not to encourage it and from my understanding its the same thing as Steam, just Origins is more open on what its actually doing.

Making the end user of your software hate/dislike/disagree with you is a great way to drive people into doing something other than what you want.

I don't.  If they really wanted to phase out PC gaming...they'd just stop publishing on the PC.

Its just as easy to do it on Xbox and PS3. The only difference is that when it comes to MP games, you cant set up a provate server on Xbox Live or PSN to play MP with your pirated game.

In case you missed it: There is currently a sh!tstorm brewing in Germany, concerning an article on gamestar.de. (translation) A lawyer scrutinized the EULA from Origin and concluded that Origin behaves much like spyware and is breaking German law. But it gets worse:

They let lose Microsoft's Process Monitor (get it here) on what Origin.exe was doing on their pc and the findings were ...interesting. Among other things, the origin executable was looking through folders belonging to an accounting program and one Sony Ericsson application.

Aftermath: 2600 (mostly negative) reactions on the article and as a protest, gamers are hammering the Battlefield 3 - Limited Edition on amazon.de. So far 2500 1 star reviews. (Bobby must be laughing his ass off right now)

I bought the BF3 - Limited Edition purely for the ME3 Demo and installed it (havent played it yet). But now I'm getting a bit anctious on what Origin is datamining on my pc....

I was just reading through some posts and I would have to agree that this is quite disturbing, at first I didn't like the way Fallout New Vegas used steam and wouldn't have bought it if I had read the box properly but in all fairness you only needed it to register the game and after that didn't need to be on the internet.

But this Origins sounds a bit more nasty and if you need to be permanently on the internet then my collection of Shepherds will just have to stay inside the Omega 4 relay. Not because I don't trust this Origins thing but on principle..

Would you want to buy a cd that you could only listen to if you were on line ? No listening in the car or on the train on the way to work ? What makes a computer game so different ? Why not just log in the CD key and it's up to you if you want to play it sitting on the roof or on a plane.. It's yours !

Meh Origin being shoved down our throats sucks, but I have 2 coputers I use this one for games and internet browsing (porn). The other I use for important computery stuff like actual work, Origin can look through whatever it likes on this comp, however it is disturbing that Origin is allowed to be so invasive and I would think that the moment something is proven that lawyers will have a field day with it.

Given the EULA and how horrible some of the stipulations are this day will come sooner than later. A common mistake is that people think a EULA is something that is set in stone however it's not, especially if it is found to be in violation of any laws.

Anyway if EA could play nice and just have a good store and actually turn Origin into a service like Steam that would help people ease into it, but just shoving it down everyones throats just because they want people to use it is a big mistake, having bought BF3 recently Origin and the Battlelog service are two of the worst things about it (among countless others).

In the end it's for the player to decide.

You know, you could always get an 360 if you are truly dedicated to the series... (Assuming you have the money and everything, of course.)

I have no doubt that if they don't change their ways, a lot of people will consider it. Although I understand how incredibly frustrating that must be, because you just shouldn't have to deal with it in the first place.

That was not a particularly nice tweet from Jesse Houston.  The question was a very reasonable one.  It's very plausible to make a game that can only be played with an internet connection even for single player.

just do the "alternate" way lol (jk)

its sad that you have to resort to piracy, even tho you own a copy of the game. But that's just what pc gaming has been reduced to.

If you attempt to play pirated games on the consoles, you can get a hardware ID ban, atleast for xbox live, which is in general 60 to 80% of the fun.

(music, movies, arcade downloads dlc etc...)

I was the one that tweeted the question to Jesse and I wasn't offended by his reply.  But just to check I sent a further message that said :-

charmingcharlie wrote ... @gtez cheers for the reply, it may seem odd but it is one of the things PC
gamers have to be on guard about these days unfortunately :-(

to which he replied :-

Gtez wrote ..... @CharmingCharli3 I hear ya!

Maybe the whole Origin thing is getting a bit annoying to Jesse but he clearly understands why I asked.  I think I would be annoyed too if my people that usually enjoy my work are worrying more about rubbish like Origin than actually getting hyped for my work.  But I wasn't offended by what Jesse said and no one should ever get too uptight about a twitter post.  You have to remember twitter posts are extremely limited in what you can convey so it is best to not read anything "ulterior" into a tweet.

This doesn't sound good to me, I still have EA download manager and haven't played any games to update it yet, but I still have the most recent patches for some EA games. Does this mean I have origin installed on my PC, or is it only when I DL the new downloader?

Heh. Yeah, we are just awesome this way. :P I approve of the ****storm against spyware Origins. Also data privacy still means something here and we have sharper laws what a company is allowed to do and not with your data...yet. So I'm not surprised to see us reacting like that toward Origins. Personally, I think a lot more should act against it. Just because they are a big company named EA they aren't allowed to do everything, ffs. <_<

The pictures of this spyware scanning the whole PC is worrisome and  inducing, really. What in the world takes EA the right to see what programs I have installed? That's none of their effing business. Well, f.... you, EA I will never ever play ME3 on PC...or any further EA games for that matter.

I bought BF3 and I will say that Origin can go **** itself with a claw hammer.

Why do I have to launch the game from my web browser?
Why do I have to launch the game every single time I want to join a different server?
Why can't I skip the opening?

ME World at War is for sure going to be using the same model. The single player may not but it's still going to be launched from Origin.

Lord forgive me for saying anything "supportive" of Origin, but the Battlefield 3 screwups are strictly Battlefield.  I've launched other games through Origin without issue; namely Mass Effect.

To be brief for there is a lot of information out there right now, is from what I understand EA might be requiring Origin to be installed as part of Mass Effect 3 and there is concern that the way Origin works by reporting back hardware and software information is unneeded and giving out information EA has no need of knowing.

There are better posts, but I think thats the basis of most peoples frustrations and concerns.

I just want to thank Chris for coming here and letting us know they are trying to get the information and we aren't being ignored on the subject.

.....so, the staff looks down upon (and admonishes) end users for doing something illegal (bypass copy protection) in order to prevent a piece of software from doing something else that is also illegal (scan your personal info on your computer through datamining). Sounds a little hypocritical....not that it bothers me since I am a 360 user

Yeah you are right but still.
In some games Punkbuster and Steam together is a pain in the ***
Other games in steam will annoy you simply by randoms "steam connection failed".
No problem with other games tho.

I had no problems with ME games on steam but i dont trust this system. Thats all.

Origin is full of sh*t. I will not abide by that. If ME3 requires Origin I will pirate the game. I'll still play it, but I won't pay for it. Heck, I'll wait for what ever long it takes to pirate it, but I will not pay for it if it goes through Origin, nor will I play if it pulls some similar crap.
