What the heck is Feynriel doing at the circle as a tranquil?

I sent him to the Dalish and made him tranquil in the Fade. Yet now he's at the Gallows. And he also has the Brand on his head.

Shouldn't he be with his mother at the Dalish Camp? Or do the Templars fear tranquil will become abominations too?

It's disgusting. If they are gonna murder the soul of a mage while they are in the Fade they should at least let their families have them back. They owe them that much for all the grief they cause.

Huh? The only time we see Feynriel as a tranquil at the circle is if you made him one during his Fade Sequence early in Act 2 and if you did it was specifically at Meretheri's request. Given the nature of the tranquil, the circle is probably the best place for him.

Edit PS:  We also learn his mother commits suicide very soon after Feynriel is made tranquil so he doesn't have a family to be returned to....one more reason it makes sense for a tranquil Feynriel to go to the circle.

As Polaris said, it was Marethari who said Feynriel should be made Tranquil if he can't be saved, not any templars. Somehow if he was that much of a danger, I don't think they would bother sending someone into the Fade. They'd probbally just go straight for the Tranquilising. The Kirkwall templars would, anyway. :P

Also, I seriously doubt the templars just marched into the Dalish camp and snatched Feynriel. There's a minor sidequest or something before this, where some termplars go to get Feynriel, and it only works then if Hawke helps them.

Tranquil aren't forced to go to the circle. The majority logically conclude that it's the best place to be as they can put their skills to work while there and do not have to deal with the public who might be disconcerted by a Tranquil

The templar made him take up knitting. He is now the number one supplier of socks in the Kirkwall Circle.

Multiple quests simply assume you side with the Templars and don't make a lot of sense otherwise. Feynriel's line is much less egregious than Best Served Cold (I mean, it'd be hard to be worse, but still, if it makes you feel any better). At least you can basically fanwank that he came to the Circle voluntarily as KJandrew suggests.

Justifying why he'd recognize or care to listen to the First Enchanter in the Fade after going to the Dalish requires a bit more contortion.

You can never have enough socks.

Where else would he go? I doubt his mother could bear to so much as look at him afterwards.

I'd assume the Kirkwall Templars might prefer to keep tranquil around as a walking 'here's what happens if you don't do what we say' banner, anyway.

The question is, who branded him (true in either case, really). Did they just... stick it on him when he showed up so people could tell? Can you do even do that, or is the scar wholly a result of the ritual?

It's not like they'd really need to, Tranquil were pretty hard to miss in Origins even without it.

Wow I didn't know this.  Do you remember how or where you found out in game?

I figured the forehead brand was a visual distinction they used in Kirkwall to make them obvious from sight, hence their absence in Origins. No idea why they'd bother with that, mind.

Thrask mentions it, I believe.

Both Marethari and Feynriel himself ask for the tranquil solution, so I have not idea why it is perceived as 'bad'.

I think Bioware just didn't get to doing the art for the brand in Origins. The tranquil at Ostagar says "can't you see my brand?" to mage PCs.

...What? Feynriel talks about it as a fate worse than death, which seems to be a common agreement when it's brought up by people other than Templar nutjobs. Heck, the one time a tranquil mage is temporarily reverted, he begs to be killed. It's not what I'd describe as a 'good' solution.

Fair enough then.

Feynriel only asks to be made Tranquil when he's lost all hope. Marethari only states that Feynriel must be made Tranquil if Hawke cannot prevent him from being possessed by demons; she's sending Hawke into his mind to rescue the boy, not lobotomize him.

I'd say pretty much every mage perceives being tranquil as 'bad'.

That includes Marethari, which is why she wouldn't talk about it in front of Arianni.

Well, I know if I were a Templar, I'd like to keep some Tranquils like him in the Gallows.

To intimidate the other Mages. "Look, even if you're as powerful as a Dreamer, I can still waste you just as easily. So behave."

Only if you break his mind by outing the demons for him. If you make him realize the tricks himself, he doesn't want to be made tranquil.

Really? I managed to get him to beg to be made tranquil without pointing out that they were demons immediately.

I kept messing with him though "yeah dude that's your dad.". Lulz.

The Templars are not responsible for making Feynriel tranquil. Whether you send him to the Circle or to the Dalish he drops into a comatose state owing to being beset by demons. Then his mother contacts you asking if you can help. Apparently if in the Circle, the First Enchanter will not allow anyone near him. I've never been quite clear how Marathari is able to get you into his dreams when he is in the Circle but there you go. It is she who says if you cannot get him away from the demons, break his trance state, then he should be made tranquil rather than risk him becoming a Dreamer Abomination. If you mess things up, as I did first run through, Feynriel actually asks to be made tranquil. The first time I acceded to his request. My latest run through, I refused and then he realised that no one in Kirkwall could help him and decided to go to Tevinter. If you do things properly he finds the strength to overcome his fears and then realises he should go to Tevinter.

A tranquil would have a better life in the Circle, where they can make proper use of their abilities than stuck in the alienage where they would probably just be something to stare at. However, there would probably be no reason why they couldn't return to their family whenever they wished, provided the family could still bear to have them around. Since Tranquil don't seem to have emotions, it probably doesn't matter much to them either way. I never got the information about his Mum committing suicide first run through which was just as well as it would have made me feel even worse than I did about making him tranquil. It is true, though, that if she did kill herself, then there would be even less reason for him to stay there. Quite why the Dalish wouldn't take them both in if you had sent him there originally, considering making him tranquil was the Keeper's idea, is less clear but may be his mother would have guessed that Marathari told you to do it (or admitted it to her) and she would not then want to stay.

Whilst having the tranquil around in the Circle might well be an implied threat, their main use is an economic one, they produce all the enchanted items that the Circle sell to make money. It should be borne in mind that normally apprentice mages are only made tranquil at their request or if the First Enchanter considers them too great a risk and it would seem the Keeper's also exercise such discretionary powers when necessary. Even Anders admits that what was occurring in the Kirkwall Circle during Hawkes time in the city was against Chantry Law and therefore not typical of Circles in the rest of Thedas, so having the Tranquil in the Circle is not usually intended as a threat. Even so, Feynriel was the only actual person I met who was made tranquil apart from Karl, despite everyone keep telling me that is what was happening.

I didn't say they were. If you read my post I said I sent him to the Dalish then I made him tranquil by killing him in the fade.

Which does not explain what he is doing at the Gallows and why he has the Lyrium brand on his head. If he was already severed from the fade why perform the rite on him?

I think the brand is seperate from the tranquility ritual itself. If Feynriel post tranquil decides to join the circle (and post tranquil it's probably the most logical and best place for him), I see no reason why the Templars wouldn't put the identifying brand on him once they verified he was in fact tranquil.
