Very interesting article here. CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS.
Take the time to read it and discuss.

My thoughts on it is exactly in line with the article, something I've discovered the more I played DA2, but never quite knew how to put it into words...

[Edit] To the haters: If you feel the urge to bash DA2, at least do so intellegently.

An interesting article, indeed. Thanks for posting the link. I agree with the author's take on the character interactions - they were, for me, what made this game so compelling from the get-go (and replay-worthy). With each playthrough, the layers build upon one another, and new details and nuances get noticed.

A quick note that there are spoilers in the article though - for those folks not yet all the way through the game.

lol DA 2 a second chance?? Hell to the no! The game makers do not even acknowledge the mistakes they had made and even insulted the majority of their customers. Also, the DLCs still show that they HAVE NOT learned from their mistake so..why should DA 2 receive a 2nd chance?? The only reason I still have that fail game is because I paid $60 for that crap and gamestop would not even give me 50% of my money back. Instead they're gonna give me back $5 to $7 for that crappy game because they also know it is crappy!

So the author realizes that DA2 forces the PC in a kind of a powerless bystander position...and in coming to terms with that he thinks it's a good game ?

No.

Just no.

DA2 wasn't a traditional bad game and many negative comments go way over the mark, but it was a disappointment -simply because one expects more than a mediocre expierence from a game with a Bioware label on it's cover.

If the autor´s standards are lowered due to second and third opinions, that is his right.
As is mine to view the change in direction and compromises in content as ingredients for a bad game I do not wish to replay.

You really needed to be convinced hard to do that, didn't you?

Also, I stopped reading at "combat void of tactics".

It's too late for second chances. That's in the past. I've started a fourth playthrough and I'm making another Hawke for my fifth.

In short, DA2 is bad in aspects we expect games to be good at (graphics, levels, mechanics) and good in aspects we don't expect from games.

Also, inb4 the characters weren't deep and compelling, Isabela was just a ****, Merrill was stoopid, Fenris was an ****, Varric was chest hair.

Interesting article indeed.

One may also want to add that the DLC (Unlike the DLC DAO got) added a great amount of quality to the game while DAO was dragged down by its mediocre DLC.

I esp. agree with the multiple playthroughs part. The more I played it, the more nuances, detail and amazing moments I found.

I can't exactly say i agree with the author - half the points he "changed his mind on" deserved all the criticism they got. Of course it's better that the hysterical reaction a la "Bioware insulted me and i demand they all be put in jail"

Also, "Characters get deeper only after you played the game twice" isn't exactly a positive point.

Interesting article, but it misses some key points. I've played DA2 6 times, and only twice did I have fun. The other 4 were to see those things like the author suggested. While yes the story and characters have elements it takes multiple playthroughs to see, the flaws of the game for many prohibit the desire to play multiple times. The author mentions judging the game on the gameplay being a shortcoming...but that is an aspect and element that cannot be avoided no matter how many times a player runs the game. Yes there are story elements you can see anew, but you still have to get through with the same gameplay mechanics that might be the initial turn-off in the first place. The dlc's did much to improve the reaction despite using the same mechanics. Why? Because of the presentation. Any great piece of art can look horrible with the wrong framework and horrible lighting. It all comes down to perspective. DA2 is an example of this. The main game is hated by many but it's dlc's are loved by many of those same people. Not much is different mechanics-wise, but the presentation is so much different it parallels the artwork in a bad frame. Liking the characters or Hawke then comes down to personal preference, but the writing was solid enough to be DA2's saving grace. Unfortunately the presentation of that will never live above mediocre when compared to it's predecessor. Origins was made with much love and care. It's obvious in the polish and presentation. Yes, Origins still has flaws, but it was still loved by many. I think DA2 hhad the same love, but not the same care. EA as the money holder may be blamed for that with the allocation of zots, but not being a dev I could not say for sure. But if the dlc's are any indication (love and care indeed present in them) perhaps the doom and gloom some have for DA3 is misplaced.

Great article, and it puts into words a lot of the reasons some of us loved DA2.

On a silly sidenote, every time I see people "spewing vitriol", as it's typically termed here, it reminds me of Boomers and Floaters, and makes me giggle. Mayhap I've played too many zombie games. :D

Sure, Dragon Age 2 had some awesome characters. That doesn't mean it's suddenly a great game or better than Origins.

No, playing through it once is pretty much playing through it 3 times. You couldn't pay me to play it again.

True enough for me. I liked the game more and more every time I replayed it. I even ended liking most of the characters I couldn't stand after first playthrough - Merrill, Isabela, Carver and am now half-way to liking Anders...
