Sigh...
Somebody needs to tell these idiots to just shut up when it comes to this issue. I hate how thats essentially what Silverman (and occasionally Hudson) keep saying. WHY don't they want part one and part two to matter? WHY? I don't get how saying "this is the BEST place to start the series" is better than "if you want the full experience, play the first two games, and you'll love this game".
Seriously, I like Bioware and all, but it just seems like half of the more "talkative" staff members just blurt things out without thinking about it. Praising the first two games could potentially get a few thousand more sales in.
They aren't saying ME1 and ME2 won't matter. They're saying you don't need to play those games to play ME3.
It's basic marketing. Most people aren't going to buy two other games because marketing is telling them that the third game won't be good if you don't play the others.
They'll get more fans to buy ME3 if they say you can start right there, and hopefully they'll love the game enough to warrant purchasing ME1 and 2.
It's like the Superbowl.
"This is the big finale."
Who cares what happened in the regular season?
"The past decisions aren't so important that you
need to play the first two games."
Now's the one that matters."This is the high point of the series".
You see, I understand the first and last points. But the second point drives me nuts. YES, I understand that you don't need to play the first two games! YES, I understand that its not a requirement. But why in the hell would you undermine the work of hundreds of other people, and the admiration of thousands of fans, by saying "who cares?" Why not instead say,
"The first two games are great, and if you play them, you'll get the definitive Mass Effect experience, but ME3 is also a good place to enter the series for new comers". NO that's NOT what the dev is saying in this case, and NO that's NOT what has been said in the past. No matter how you spin it, "who cares?" has a feeling of benign disinterest in it. If someone came up to me, asked me a question, and I said "who cares?", I would, in nearly every culture in the world, be being rude-- and that's something coming from an American!
I'll repeat my point again in another way:
"
Mass Effect is considered some of the greatest series out there today in gaming. You wanna know what the fuss is about? Don't wait four months to purchase ME3, get caught up now! But if you can't, ME3 is still a great place to enter."
-vs-
"Don't bother playing ME1 and ME2 if you don't want to. ME3 is the definitive Mass Effect game."
