wow two paragraphs written by a company from which people learned to take news with a grain of salt. theres really no definite quotes in there that say anything about the game. the way this thread is going is a waste of forum space.

This can be said of most threads around here.

Use the NPD numbers.

In January 2010 ME2 sold 572,000 units.
In February 2010 it sold 246,000 units
In March 2010 it sold < 100,000 units (Less than the #10 game in the list)

So it sold 818,000 units,  then dropped off the charts.  You can project out an upper limit for sales,  and assume an incredibly unrealistic number of the number of units the #10 game sold - 1 for each following month.  3.x million units is within the realm of possible,  not able to commit to how likely it is.

But to put it in perspective,  NFL 2011 sold around 1.4 million in the first week.  Battlefield 3 sold 5 million in it's first week (Remember,  EA likes to play games with the words "Shipped and Sold",  Gamespot has the real number in it's news today).

Further,  you cannot compare ME to ME2.  Installed base becomes a problem I doubt any of us here have the knowledge to adjust the numbers for.  ME launched with a much smaller installed base,  when you compare the percentages of sales to consoles,  Mass Effect was a significantly better performer.

I appreciate the better numbers for early 2010, Gatt9, but do you have anything for the PS3 version, which, as you know, came out a year later? Also, do those numbers include PC sales. I was appalle to learn that VGC numbers for PC sales did not include North America.

EDITED P.S. Can you link the Gamespot article? I don't see it.

Sadly this is one of the saner posts. The article says nothing new but people are discussing it as if it spells doom to the freaking ME3 franchise because you don't have to play the previous games to play ME3.

Which is the same thing they said for ME2. <_<

There really shouldn't be but unfortunately (or fortunately) BSN finds a problem in anything.

Sounds just like something IGN would write too. They always do point out the obvious.

What have I been saying for a long time? Mass effect is no longer an rpg, it's an action game. Do I say that because of inventory, or level progression? No. My definition rpg is role playing the character, go figure. Shepard is so predefined its really hard to play me2 with all of the preset dialogue responses and personality. This seems like its going to continue in me3. For example, talking to the female krogan Shepard automatically says he'd like to get to know her. What happens to the people who were anti krogan in me1, and to a certain degree in me2? Biowares canonizing Shepard because it makes him the iconic character of the franchise. I laugh at all of these people talking about "their" Shepard, because ever since me2 Shepard is predefined. I'm buying mass effect 3, but only for the sake of finishing the trilogy. We're in a market over saturated by shooter and action game developers, we don't have many good rpg developers. Now that biowares gone, we only have Bethesda and they're looking like they want to sell out as well. What's ironic to me is that the head of bioware claims that RPGs are dying, yet CliffyB from the gears franchise is saying its the future of gaming.

I believe BioWare said they cut that dialogue choice out for the demo. You can respond how you want in the game.

Somebody needs to tell these idiots to just shut up when it comes to this issue. I hate how thats essentially what Silverman (and occasionally Hudson) keep saying. WHY don't they want part one and part two to matter? WHY? I don't get how saying "this is the BEST place to start the series" is better than "if you want the full experience, play the first two games, and you'll love this game"

Seriously, I like Bioware and all, but it just seems like half of the more "talkative" staff members just blurt things out without thinking about it. Praising the first two games could potentially get a few thousand more sales in.

They aren't saying ME1 and ME2 won't matter. They're saying you don't need to play those games to play ME3.

It's basic marketing. Most people aren't going to buy two other games because marketing is telling them that the third game won't be good if you don't play the others.

They'll get more fans to buy ME3 if they say you can start right there, and hopefully they'll love the game enough to warrant purchasing ME1 and 2.

It's like the Superbowl.

"This is the big finale."

Who cares what happened in the regular season?

"The past decisions aren't so important that you need to play the first two games."

Now's the one that matters.

"This is the high point of the series".

You see, I understand the first and last points. But the second point drives me nuts. YES, I understand that you don't need to play the first two games! YES, I understand that its not a requirement. But why in the hell would you undermine the work of hundreds of other people, and the admiration of thousands of fans, by saying "who cares?" Why not instead say, "The first two games are great, and if you play them, you'll get the definitive Mass Effect experience, but ME3 is also a good place to enter the series for new comers". NO that's NOT what the dev is saying in this case, and NO that's NOT what has been said in the past. No matter how you spin it, "who cares?" has a feeling of benign disinterest in it. If someone came up to me, asked me a question, and I said "who cares?", I would, in nearly every culture in the world, be being rude-- and that's something coming from an American!

I'll repeat my point again in another way:

"Mass Effect is considered some of the greatest series out there today in gaming. You wanna know what the fuss is about? Don't wait four months to purchase ME3, get caught up now! But if you can't, ME3 is still a great place to enter."

-vs-

"Don't bother playing ME1 and ME2 if you don't want to. ME3 is the definitive Mass Effect game."

I don't care what some advertising article stated. I played ME and ME2 for hundreds of hours and this invalidates none of it. Even if they made none of the choices matter I still enjoyed the experience. (I doubt highly it will be so.) I am hoping ME3 will be just as entertaining.

Thanks for the memories of all your great games BW. BG1 & 2 TOB, NWN, Jade Empire, KOTOR, DA:O and ME and ME2. (I spent far too much of my life playing your games.) That's a compliment. :D

Another variable left unaccounted for though is competition. The amount of AAA titles avaiable today far outshine what was available when ME1 came out. The consoles were still new and didn't have nearly as many games already established. ME1 came out before Christmas because it could afford to; its only competition was the also untested Assassin's Creed, CoD4 (which started this whole CoD craze; up until that game was played by millions, the franchise was dying), Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Halo 3. Now, with the consoles out for so long, we get sequels to sequels constantly year-round.

I'm so tired of bullsh*t quotes like this. Stop just dismissing your other games (which were masterpieces) as insignificant to try to get more new people to play this one. It's annoying.

There has to be some kind of hidden message in this article. Otherwise it's an IGN troll attempt.
