Its a statement directed at new customers - as good as the first two games are, ME1 in particular is getting on a bit and new customers may be put off if they think that to enjoy it fully they need to buy and play two older games. Bioware has a responsibilty to its staff, its shareholders and EA to ensure that ME3 seels as many copies as possible so the marketing team have to make it as appealing as possible. The vast majority of fans that have been here from the start will buy ME3 anyway - depsite what people say, I don't think there are many people who are willing to skip out the final part of a story they've invested plenty of time and money in the first two thirds, particularly when these people spend time on an internet forum devoted to that story and game.RolandX9 wrote...
+1. Stupidest Bioware marketing quote thus far, considering that the whole effing draw for the majority of people buying this game will be to finish what we started. You know, actions, consequences, that sort of thing? I really hope no one there actually thinks that a galaxy-wide war is comparable to one football game. If it weren't for ME1, I wouldn't even be looking at ME3.Kaiser Shepard wrote...
"It's like the Superbowl. Who cares what happened in the regular season? Now's the one that matters."
Sigh...
The BiowareTV stuff and the Twitter stuff is more often than not for the established fans. Benile marketing lines such as the one quoted are to hook as many new people as possible by making ME3 sound more appealing. Don't read into it too much.

I hate how all the devs and reps have just been dismissing their own previous two games as unimportant, and that this is the best place to start. 'Don't bother playing 1 and 2 just buy 3 it's da best! Who cares about the other stuff like characters story and background just get 3, it has more shooting and guns and fun stuff not like crappy RPG booorrring stuff.' WTF!? It's bullsh*t a complete lie and incredibly frustrating. You don't start a bloody trilogy at the end! All these claims that you should start at ME3 make me think that the import system will be rough.
They've been saying that in marketing, but outside of it(tweets) they've said the previous game's choices are important.

Yep, I'd like to hear some good news again soon.
Some of the things I've been hearing lately - whether from Bioware/EA themselves (constantly shooting themselves in the foot), or other sites - have been quite off-putting.

What I find most annoying is that it's not even that Bioware is simply trying to avoid talking about Mass Effect 1 and 2, but that they are actively disregarding the first two instalments. Maybe I'm overlooking other companies' marketing strategies, but how often do developers say "This is the best place to start" with series like Halo, Assassin's Creed, Hitman, etc? It just seems a very odd strategy.

I really think you're taking it the wrong way. They're trying to impress us with how BIG AND EPIC ME3 will be compared to the other two.ME_Fan wrote...

"Oh, you thought fighting Saren was cool? Wait til you fight THIS COOL THING."
Combine that with their eagerness to get ME virgins interested, and you get HURP DURP WHAT TRILOGY.
When I get really excited about some cool I'm working on, I kind of sound the same.

Not everyone who reads IGN has played or knows of Mass Effect. Not all articles written for IGN are meant to cater to you, the hardcore Mass Effect fan. Yet, you all seem to think you need to snark at such articles that are not written to your lofty parameters.
Who said the internet is full of whiny people? Oh that's right, me.

And the nail is hit right on the head. This kind of marketing is for new customers who are undecided about ME3 - for whatever reason they chose not to buy ME1 or ME2, so if they're going to buy ME3 they need to know that the first two aren't essential. They'll be missing out on a significant chunk of this great story, and won't get to properly make the choices, but Bioware doesn't need to tell them that. The Twitter posts and thing like that are for the hardcore fans - stuff like the IGN article aren't for us, so stop reading into them too far.Chris Priestly wrote...

But I do agree that this community tends to get a little confused as to how small a minority they actually are.
Myself included.

Invalidating my accomplishments in the first two games does not strike me as the best way to market Mass Effect 3. You want to avoid mentioning the first two games? By all means, but having a Bioware manager essentially tell us "Who cares about Mass Effect 1 and 2?" ruins any efforts they have made to market this as the conclusion of a trilogy.

Yeah, you're right, I have nothing against this article, what does kinda annoy me though, is things like Flynn's Superbowl remark, essentially dismissing the previous two games completely. It's not a big deal, just a bit frustrating because it's complete nonsense. Mass Effect is a trilogy.

I lol'd, and it's true what you say. People hang on every bit of news here and if they don't quite understand it or a certain statement they instantly fly off the handle and only focus on the self concieved misunderstood wrong side of the news, making themselves worry over nothing when we have already seen/heard/read plenty of news that this game will be awesome. (IMO at least) I mean seriously guys, would it kill some of you to think positively for once?

Ok, I'm going to call you on this.
Please say where Aaryn says this, I have read the article and reread the article. NO WHERE does he say your accomplishements are invalid or that no one cares about ME1 or ME2.
Explain.
