I don't have any either, Merin, but i can understand BioWares need to market to those who do.

Advertising to people who played the last game is pretty pointless, they would make up their mind on whether or not they want the new game by judging the last one. By encouraging people to jump in whenever, Bio makes much more cash.

Here's the thing, though...

who wants to stay with a series that constantly is only concerned about trying to bring in new people?

Why stay with it?

The marketing has to be to not only sell to NEW people, but to also not LOSE sales overall.  Now, I seriously doubt even the worst of advertising is going to, by its lonesome, turn off customers of a product they like.  But it doesn't help keep them.

Think of it this way - there's a club.  Joining the club you get a present.  Once a member of the club, however, you find all the club's focus is on getting new people.  The club doesn't do anything for retention but only for enlistment.  They successfully bring in new people who get the present, but after that the members leave as the only presents are for new members.

Think of how weak the military would be if it only focused on enlistment and not retention.  What use is an army of privates with nary a corporal, let alone a sergeant, around?

If you ridicule your base to try and bring in those who weren't already part of your group, your group will mostly only ever be "just joined" people.

Another example from back in the day - Colomia House and their cassette / CD deals.  How many people stayed ordering music from them after the initial introductory deal?  Not many at all.

It's fine to try and expand your base, but you have to make those in the base want to stay.  And telling them that the reasons they joined your group are not good (like, say, all the bashing DA:O got in the marketing for DA2) is not a good way to make those who were with you then want to stick around.

In the end, buying the games will come down to if the games are good, yes.

But if you constantly court the indifferent "middle" while taking your base for granted, your base might feel neglected and just not turn out.

From personal experience - there's a difference between me renting a game or picking up a game after it's been out for awhile so it's cheaper (good game, just trying to save money), vs. me loving a company and it's product and wanting to support it (me pre-ordering CE's and getting DLC packs that aren't that great but wanting to show the company that I like what they are doing)

There is a way to bring in new people while supporting those you already have... it's called word of mouth.  You treat your base well, while keeping your games accessible and offering easy ways in for new members, your BASE will recruit for you.  I brought in, personally, 8 people to BioWare games over the last 4 years or so that the advertising was NOT reaching because of my enthusiasm for the games and the company.  You CANNOT get that with slick ads using Marilyn Manson music and "awesome button" catch phrases.  And you cannot get that if you take your base for granted.

There's your differences.  If that doesn't explain it, I can't do any better.

I think that pretty much explains it. Great post.

I feel that saying "the previous games were just a warm up for this one" is justified and acceptable. Greatest thing we have faced in the leadup to ME3 is one Reaper against everything we can gather, in ME3 we are facing thousands who have already hit us where we live.

However, saying "Who cares what happened in the regular season? Now's the one that matters." Is just retarded, and he deserves a smack upside the head for it.

We care, nobhead. Our caring made your company millions, if not billions, of dollars. This game would not exist without us having cared about the previous ones. Moron.

I get that they have to shift focus away from the previous games and highlight ME3 as a stand alone experience, but that can be done without blatantly insulting the previous games.

Agreed.

Building up your upcoming game by tearing down the previous ones is not a good practice.

There's a world of difference between "Who cares what happened before?" and "All the paths you've taken have led to this"

I would like to think that.. in the moments of ME3.. choices such as the Rachni Queen, saving or not saving the Council, brainwashing/destroying the Geth etc. would be of some importance.

Absolutely! I agree. However, lets say saving the Rachni Queen backfires, or the brainwashed/destroyed Geth impacts my chances negatively. It... doesn't... matter in the scope of the current conflict. I can't dwell on those decisions because I'm in the midst of fighting the entire Reaper fleet.

Thats what the analogy is meant to portray, in my opinion. Regardless of the positive or negative outcomes of previous decisions you still have to fight the war.

That simply isn't what was said. At all.

I dislike BioWare's current 'direction' (downward) as much as the next naysayer here but I wouldn't put too much stock in that claim. BioWare probably just wanted to emphasize the build-up leading to the final's game plot, and how everything ties into it. It's just hype.

The older games were singleplayer games with a focus on singleplayer. Back when Mass Effect was good, before multiplayer, energy swords, railgun sequences and plastic FemShep.

Mass Effect 3 is the new Dragon Age 2

I can live with whatever changes they make to the game.

What I can't live with is Origin/Evil DRM.

Not a problem for consoles though.

That was a well-reasoned post, MerinTB, but the old members of the "club" are getting something from it. They get to complete a journey begun years ago with ME1, something no first-time ME3 player will have or can ever get.

While I've already said that the wording in the interview that started this thread was unfortunate, no number of poorly worded statements will change the story of Cmdr. Frank Shepard, the orphaned kid with no biotics or special tech talents who joined the service to just to get out of the hole he was in and, if he was going to die anyway, at least die with some purpose. Now he's about to become the greatest hero in the history of any species, indeed, of all species capable of remembering their history.

We're the old school. We got to take the journey. Nobody else will. Mass Effect did that for us. We are and always will be the first and greatest beneficiaries of that. Do not begrudge new players whatever consolations BioWare can still offer them, even if some of it comes at our expense. They will never be able to go where we have already been, and their final victory can never mean so much as ours.

Seems to have been made by someone who didn't play ME1 but just wanted to leap on the EA hate bandwagon.

With all the EA marketing screw ups lately I now wonder if BioWare would have been better off just being bought by Microsoft? I know the marketing at least would have been a lot better.

Exactly.

ME3 is, if you like, the destination of the ME story - the galactic war is what the entire story has been building up to. Some people just want to get to the destination as quickly as posisble and enjoy the 'main event' of the ME storyline - the galactic war.

However, the people that played ME1 and ME2 got to experience the journey leading to that destination - we've got the full story, and ME3 will have that much more of an impact because of how invested we are in this story. Let Bioware say whatever they want to lure new people in - thats what marketing is for, and done of us should begrudge Bioware being successful with ME3 - but we, the old school fans, know that the journey as just as important than the destination. We know that ME1 and ME2 mattered.

I get what you're trying to say, and that everyone needs to chill out a bit. However, that doesn't mean people should be allowed to get away with obvious dishonesty.
