How can I access the Baldur's Gate Big World Project with GOG?

The problem is that I was not given the choice of where I wanted the game to be installed when I downloaded the game through GOG. I tried dragging and dropping the GOG folder into the games folder, but that didn't work either.
Does anyone know what I can do to get the Big World Project to work with a GOG installation?
Thanks!
By the way, the steps I was using for the Big World Project installation are at this link, if that clarifys things:

From memory there are 2 buttons on the GOG download screen - the highlighted green button and another one on the left of the screen saying something like options. Clicking on the latter will allow you to put in whatever location you want for your download.

Edit - don't install to program files though, the games suggestion is much better for recent versions of Windows.

I haven't used the BWP, but there's no problem in downloading the GOG files to any location you want - in fact a location other than Program Files is positively recommended for older games like BG on Vista or Windows 7.

So, is it possible then for me to uninstall my GOG games and then re-install them in the "games" folder? I mean will GOG allow me to download them again without paying a second time? Also, I have quite a few saved games in Baldurs Gate 2. It was my intent to import my character from my existing game into a new game in the Big World Project. If I uninstall my GOG game so that I can re-install it in the proper folder will I lose these saved game files?

BWP doesn't care where your game is installed, only that it ends in BGII - SOA. So either C:program filesBGII - SOA or C:gamesBGII - SOA should be fine. Hope that helps.

Perhaps part of the problem is that there actually is no folder on my computer called Shadows of Amn. There is a "GOG.com" folder and within that folder there is a "Baldur's Gate" folder and a "Baldur's Gate II" folder. Baldur's Gate 2 includes both Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal, but it doesn't actually say that anywhere. I put the Big World Project in the "Baldur's Gate II" folder for lack of anything that more closely resembled a Shadows of Amn folder.
If I could somehow move the game to the "games" folder without actually uninstalling or somehow get the BWP to recognize it in its present location it would be ideal. I don't want to risk losing my current saved game files, nor do I want to risk the game not properly uninstalling and thereby preventing me from re-installing it. That happened with the CD version of Baldur's Gate 1. I've been playing the GOG version of BG2 on my computer for a while now, but I was still using the CD version of BG1. The info I read about the BWP said that I needed to do a "full install" for both games in order for them to work. I thought it would be simple to uninstall the CD version of BG1 and then re-install it so that it would be a full version. Boy was I wrong! It gave me error messages that basically stated that I could not uninstall it because it could not locate all the components to do so, or something to that effect. I systematically deleted every component of BG1 on my computer so that I could then use the CD to re-install the full version. However, the CD still claimed even when there were no BG1 components left on my computer that it was in fact still installed and could, therefore, not be re-installed. After several hours of messing with it I finally gave up and, regretfully, paid the $10 to buy the GOG version of BG1 so that I could get around this problem and actually have the full install. I thought it was quite annoying to have to buy a second copy of the game just because the game lacked the competence to properly uninstall itself, but oh well. If only the instructions within the BWP installer had mentioned the need to install it to the "games" folder at that point. Alas they did not. I do not want to attempt to uninstall the GOG version of BG1 only to have this same problem happen again resulting in my having to purchase yet another copy of BG1 just so that I can persuade the BWP to find it. Therefore, if anyone has any ideas about how I could force the GOG version into the "games" folder or get BWP to recognize it in its present location, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks!

Copy them from your CD/DVD if you did a full installation.
If it's not possible, consider doing a new BG1 install. The "Baldur's Gate" folder you entered does not contain a current version. Please download and install the official ToSC-patch of BioWare, otherwise you will encounter various already fixed errors."

You can download as many times as you want - just log into your GOG account and you will see all your owned games - click on BG2 to download.ARKdeEREH wrote...

If you use the BG uninstall option (file in main folder) this will ask whether you want to delete your saved games or not. If you're worried just take a copy of the saved games before you uninstall.
See above - no problem in downloading again. However, to save you a bit of time in future I suggest (if you have a bit of hard disk space free) that you save the download files (3 for BG2 and 1 for BG1) somewhere. Then just clicking on these will give you another installation.ARKdeEREH wrote...

I think that's your problem. The GOG version is a full install, but it's not compatible with disc versions. If you try and use BGT to combine a disc BG1 with GOG BG2 you'll get errors.I've been playing the GOG version of BG2 on my computer for a while now, but I was still using the CD version of BG1.
See above. If you've been playing around with this installation I would definitely advise uninstalling both and reinstalling fresh copies of both BG1 and BG2 to your preferred location - then you should be ready to start modding. Best of luck!I do not want to attempt to uninstall the GOG version of BG1 only to have this same problem happen again resulting in my having to purchase yet another copy of BG1 just so that I can persuade the BWP to find it. 2.Don't just copy & paste folders across but if uninstall is not an option then you can use a cloning tool like the one built into the new tutu to back up your bg2 folder before making changes.
3. Win7 lies to the user (& the program) about where it is storing your files therefore, NEVER install ANY program in the Win7 programs folder... one has to wonder what drugs got used the day that decision was made.

I got it to download now, thanks! Now that it's downloaded it won't install. BWP wouldn't acknowledge my game when it was in the programs file in order to download it. I uninstalled it and re-installed it into a games folder that I made for that purpose. Then it let me download it there, but now it doesn't like it that it isn't in the programs file. Since it isn't in the programs file it thinks that my game doesn't exist and therefore it won't install even though the BWP files are now downloaded on my computer.
Is there anyway to bypass this? Obviously I can't have my game installed in two places at the same time and if I undo this download so that I can put it back in the programs file it will then not let me download it again because its not in the games folder.
If not, can I just install all the already downloaded mods individually, as in ignore the BWP set-up entirely and just install the mods without it? Will there be any negative effect(s) to doing it this way?
Thanks!

There's no problem with installing mods individually. However, installation order is important with mods, so you need to check readme instructions (or check the order that BWP would have used for installation).
There's also no problem in having multiple copies of the game downloaded by the way - I think I've got about half a dozen at the moment on my computer.

What folder is BG2 installed to now? C;\\games\\BGII - SOA or something different. I think BWP checks in detail, e.g. spaces and case sensitive.
Edit, Grond0. Do you need to do anything special. Whenever I tried to install a second time in Windows it would uninstall the first, same in Wine. If I copy the entire folder the registry keys remain the same and both versions use the same location, e.g. ini files.

The only difference I've noticed in relation to installation is that each time you start up a non-installed game it tells you to confirm your config set-up. It does save the set-up, so you don't need to re-enter settings, i.e. it's just an additional screen to get through during the start-up.
Edit: the above is true in relation to playing under various different versions of windows - can't speak for Wine though

I've never used BWP, but it seems unlikely that it wouldn't allow you to choose the location that mods search for game information. Are you sure there's not a button somewhere saying something like "browse" that lets you change the default location?

The installation is in dos so there aren't any buttons to press. It basically says that my game doesn't exist because it isn't in the program files and perhaps it's in a different place. It gives me one chance to type in the directory where my game is actually located. I did this and then it told me that my game actually wasn't there. There did not seem to be a way to get the installer to re-open after that, so the only way I could get back to it was to go through the whole process of downloading BWP a second time. I did this, thinking I had mistyped something in the directory. The second time I compared the directory that I typed in with the folder that the game was installed in so that I was 100% certain that everything was written the same way. It had the same result as before.
When you say you have multiple copies of the game downloaded on your computer, do you mean that you just downloaded BG into folders, but never installed it? Does that work with GOG?

Manual install should be fine, I've done this with files BWP downloads. As Grond0 said the order is important but following the BWP order sorts that.

The folder for BG2 is called "C:Games\\Baldur's Gate II"
BG 1 is installed in "C:Games\\Baldur's Gate"
The Big World Set-up with the downloader, where the mod selection takes, place acknowleged the game at that location and with that spelling. It is the dos installer after BWP is already downloaded that cannot find it for some reason. I haven't actually gotten far enough for the installer to recognize if BG2 is there. It checks for BG1 first and then won't let me continue because it can't find it.

All my versions are derived from GOG, but I've used two methods to take copies. First is to run the GOG installation files multiple times in order to create duplicate vanilla installations. Second is to copy and paste the whole folder with the installation in (normally at a particular stage of modding I want to preserve). Both have worked for me, though not for Gate70 - not sure if that's because he uses Wine or something else.ARKdeEREH wrote...

I wonder if the problem is your use of apostrophes in the name - some programs can't recognise non-standard characters. The folder for BG2 is called "C:GamesBaldur's Gate II"
BG 1 is installed in "C:GamesBaldur's Gate"

BG1 installation
- Make a full installation of BG1 and Tales of the Sword Coast
- Should be installed in C:\\Games\\Baldur's Gate
- Patch it with BioWare’s official ToSC patch v5512
- Start BG1, make your settings, create a character and make a quicksave with Q in Candlekeep
- Quit the game
BG2 installation
- Make a full installation of BG2 and Throne of Bhaal
- Should be installed in C:\\Games\\BGII - SoA
- Patch it with BioWare’s official ToB patch v26498
- Start BG2 and ToB, make your settings, create a character and after the autosave quit the game
EDIT - see, I got it wrong too. Needs to be SoA not SOA...talk about picky. You also missed a backslash out (C:Games\\Baldur's Gate instead of C:\\Games\\Baldur's Gate) in your post, if you did this when BWP asks it would complain for this reason too.
